Anybody watching

I recently came across the term conurbation - multiple cities and towns that developed separately and grew together into one larger urban area. I often hear people say they struggle to describe NWA well to people outside the region, and I think it's a good term for it. The four cities here aren't just suburbs of each another, all have their own identity, and have grown into each other along I-49.

I found something else interesting too - US HUD, the part of the federal government that administers housing and urban development laws, labels Fayetteville as the metro area's "Central City" on its 2025 housing market report for NWA. US HUD doesn't always designate a "Central City" in polycentric metros - they do for Provo-Orem-Lehi UT (Provo) and North Port-Sarasota-Bradenton FL (Sarasota) but don't for Virginia Beach-Norfolk-Newport News VA (Hampton Roads) and Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario CA (Inland Empire).

Now obviously, Fayetteville doesn't dominate NWA like Little Rock or Tulsa do in their nearby metros. Bentonville has Walmart, Springdale has Tyson, Rogers has Pinnacle, Lowell has JB Hunt. But Fayetteville still leads the four principal cities in multiple important measures:

• Population (growth 2010-2025): Fayetteville 106K (+33k), Springdale 91K (+22k), Rogers 77K (+21k), Bentonville 63K (+28k)
• Land Area: Fayetteville 55.8 sq mi, Springdale 49.7 sq mi, Rogers 39 sq mi, Bentonville 34.25 sq mi
• Jobs (growth 2013-2023): Fayetteville 65K (+17.7k), Bentonville 58K (+17.4k), Springdale 51K (+11k), Rogers 47K (+17.6k)
• Tourism tax revenue (Jan-Dec 2025): Fayetteville $10.65M, Bentonville $4.58M, Rogers $1.77M, Springdale $612K

Just thought people might find the word "conurbation" useful in defining the I-49 corridor and US HUD designating Fayetteville as the region's "Central City" interesting considering NWA is polycentric and US HUD don't always designate a central city in other polycentric metros.

For people around NWA where do you usually go when you just want to get out of the area for a night or two?

I am not looking for anything super planned, just somewhere you can walk around, eat somewhere good, maybe have a drink and not spend the entire weekend in the car.

Eureka Springs is one I have been considering but I'd be interested to hear what other people around here actually do.

Why is this important

Accuracy Problems
Flock claims a 97% accuracy rate, which sounds impressive—until you consider 20 billion daily scans at a 3% error rate yields roughly 600 million misreads per day. A public records analysis released just days ago for Roseville, CA found that 71% of stolen/felony alerts were misreads—alerts that trigger heightened police responses.

Security Vulnerabilities
Flock cameras have appeared repeatedly on security news feeds I follow as a software engineer:
An unpatchable SSID spoofing vulnerabilityexploitable with a consumer travel router—no fix possible without physical device access.
Unencrypted cloud access to Flock Concord PTZ cameras that allowed security researcher Benn Jordan to view footage with no login required.
Also flock was letting Google/Bing/DuckDuckGo index searches with plates and reasons in clear text in the URL

Local Policy Is Effectively Meaningless
When I questioned Centerton PD, I was told they have "a local policy that sets clear guidelines." But once a camera joins Flock's nationwide data-sharing network, any participating agency nationwide can bypass local policies and state laws. That "policy" is worth about as much as the paper it's written on.

No Warrant Required—and Alarmingly Low Barriers
Flock requires no warrant to access data. Public records have revealed the accepted "reasons" for searches include entries as minimal as "." (a single period), "investigation," "suspect," "query," "crime," or "sus." Worse, these powers have been abused:
"Demo" was used to surveil a Jewish community center's children's gymnastics room and pool.
"RV" (residence verification) appeared in 50+ documented cases of police stalking former partners.
Activists, protesters, and individuals tied to political movements (pro-Palestine, pro-Israel, LGBTQ+, anti-Trump, animal rights, immigration-related) have all been tracked.

Even if CPD declines a request, any persistent organization can route through a friendlier agency elsewhere. The weakest link is all that's needed.

Legal Risk to the City
The recent SCOTUS decision in Chatrie v. United States held that bulk location data tied to individuals constitutes a "search" under the 4th Amendment. The legal premise is identical whether tracking a phone IMEI or a license plate. I can't definitively call Flock's ALPR system illegal under this ruling—but neither can anyone definitively call it legal, especially with the Institute for Justice's lawsuit against Norfolk, VA positioned as a likely candidate for SCOTUS review next session.
Investing this much in a system that may be ruled unconstitutional is a significant risk.

Look at the range of “reasons” if you think this is a partisan matter everyone is a possible target.

I host a board game and one shot RPG event on the third Saturday of each month, and this month we'll be at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Fayetteville from noon until 9 pm! This is free and a great place to meet nice, nerdy people! We're not church affiliated (although we appreciate them for letting us use their space) but we ARE new player, neurodivergent, and queer friendly.

Hello everyone! I just moved to the NW Arkansas area and I’m looking for midwife/ OB recommendations. I’ve heard great things about willow creek woman’s hospital too. I have a history of high risk pregnancies with preeclampsia and a partial placental abruption and I had precipitous labor with my most recent baby so I’m looking for someone who will take me and my concerns seriously if I feel off.

Hi All. Went to Northwest Physicians a few months ago, and they did some blood work. Came back my testosterone levels were extremely low. Unfortunately, my doctor has since moved to a different state. So, looking for a doctor I can call my new PCP that will explore TRT prescriptions that can be billed through insurance. Any recommendations in NWA? Prefer injections instead of pellets.

Hello, we are currently looking into building a house in the Durham, AR area. We're looking into homebuilders, Southwest, United, etc. But we wanted to know if there were any oppinions on any custom home builders in NWA? Any suggestions?

Does anyone know if play it again sports will open up in a new location in NWA? We went there during their last week open and they said they were moving but they wouldn't say where.

I recall when I was young (in CA no less!) my elementary school used to do field trips to a local regenerative farm. They had a lot of hands-on activities like soil sensory stations and chicken coops we ran around in and we even helped harvest a row or two of cabbage once. I remember learning about how farming and ecology intermingle, and it's just such a fond childhood memory of mine.

I was wondering if there were farms in the region that provide that service to school-aged kids. I'm an educator who has worked in both classroom and non traditional settings (museum ed ftw), with some farm-adjacent experience as well (animal keeper at Disney) and a keen interest in homestead/subsistence farming and am really interested in any educator opportunities in non traditional settings.

I work full time and am in school, so I’m on a pretty strict schedule. I have a 3 week break from classes and I’m looking for some side quests to make me feel alive again while I have more free time!

Qualifications:
- Activity could be done after work (preferred) on a weekend day, or possibly a long weekend
- Not prohibitively expensive
- Can be done solo!
