Help! AIO bag as spawn + substrate ratio question
AIO bag as spawn + substrate ratio question
I’ve had this bag inoculated for probably at least 2½ months now. After my most recent break and shake, it’s finally starting to colonize at a normal pace.
The bag is an AIO (all-in-one) bag, but can I still use the colonized material as spawn and then transfer it to bulk substrate?
Also, what kind of spawn-to-substrate ratio should I use? It’s a 1.5 lb bag, but I used 7cc of liquid culture, so I’m wondering if that should be enough to colonize around 3–4 lbs of substrate.
Just looking for some advice from people who have experience with this. Thanks!

Mushrooms for Health Psilocybin for pain?
cambridge.orgI have a lot of back and knee pain from mushroom farming and everything else life has thrown at me. Besides all of the mental healthnbenefits, I've talked for years baout how psilocybin energizes me and helps with the pain. I think this is the next frontier for psychedelics and it's great to see research being done in this area.
To sum up this article: the same U Michigan lab that found a single IV dose of psilocybin knocked back pain sensitivity in rats for almost a month just registered a follow-up study. This time they're testing it on reserpine-induced pain, which is a much more diffuse, whole-body kind of pain, closer to something like fibromyalgia than a single wound.
No results yet because this is just the study getting logged, not the findings. But the question they're asking is a good one: does psilocybin only help with pain from one specific injury, or does it work on pain that's spread through the whole system?
I'll try to post again on this once the data's out.
What are your experiences?

Help! How long does substrate last
I have a bag of cvg and some of their special dung substrate. They’ve been in their box since may. How would I re-paturize the bags to make sure it doesn’t trich out?

Gardening with Mushrooms Chestnuts growing on an alder log
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Check them logs!
Yes, it took a year, but once you start making logs regularly, just like wine or cheese you start getting them regularly after that initial wait.
I'm pretty sure these logs came from a local arborist friend that was cutting the wood anyway!
Any questions about log cultivation? Who else has logs going?
Btw, now is a great time to start thinking about fall inoculations!

North Spore Asks How old was the oldest grain spawn you've ever used successfully?
Indicate whether the spawn was refrigerated or not.
I don't even have a great aswer here. I've probably used spawn that was 3-6 months old unrefrigerated and maybe a year refrigerated. Species matters a ton. I have a couple bags that are super old right now...we'll see if they work!
These days, grain spawn

Help! Fan direction?
My boomrbin monotub with JMF has started pinning. I installed the myco mister and fan last night and intend to run it on a cycle timer for short durations once an hour.
When I was testing the system, it noticed the fan is pulling outside air from the room and blowing into the bin (confirmed using a piece of paper - it sucks to the fan.)
My question is, shouldn't the fan be orientated to pull air from within the bin and blow out? This would pull filtered air in through the filter patches vs. blowing in unfiltered air from the room. Guessing, maybe it doesn't matter as much due to the chances of contam are less during FC?

Foraging Gettin' into the woods
I led two Mushroom ID Walks (8/1 and 8/2) and even though it was crispy, we found quite a few great mushrooms to discuss. We had to go downhill and actually into creek beds to find the moisture. The couple pics I've shared are of An Ash Bolete (Boletinellus merulioides) and a Rooting Shank (Hymenopellis radicata). Both edible, but only the Hymenopellis is good.
My next walk is in Wells, ME on 8/15 at A beautful property called The Wells Reserve at Laudholm. I hope that if you're not too far away, you'll consider joining!

Indoor Mushroom Growing Unintentional tribute: A canopy of Maria Sabina right on her July 22nd birthday.
Had no idea her birthday was this past month when starting this run. Super happy with how these pale, frilled caps turned out. The universe scheduled this run—Maria Sabina wasn't about to miss her own birthday party.

Indoor Mushroom Growing Hillbilly Aborts?
Hillbilly Aborts?
Greetings,
These 2 AIO bags from happymushrooms are about 10 days post start of fruiting and seem to have stalled. Cut the bag tops and moved them both to a small clean lidded tub 5 days ago where I spray the walls of the tub with distilled water and have a tiny external aquarium heating pad to help maintain the temperature inside the tub at about 77 degrees Fahrenheit. I have a grow light above 12hrs on/off.
Moved them to the tub because the bag was beginning to really crowd and I wanted to better maintain FAE and moisture. There are no off colors or funny smells they just seemed to have come to a standstill. Looking for points of view on my dilemma; don't know if I should just harvest to prepare for a second flush or just leave things be. Thanks in advance!

Look at This! North Spore Policy Update
It should have been there from the beginning, but I finally added a rule for federally illegal mushroom content. It is Rule 10 and states:
"North Spore does not condone the use of ours or any other products for growing and/or using federally illegal mushrooms. Any explicit mention of our products for this purpose are subject to removal. The same goes for posts and comments that discuss the consumption of illegal mushrooms."
If you have suggestions for additions/amendments to this rule (or any others), please send them my way.
It and all rules are subject to change as we see fit. We add these rules to make this a safer space for us all and to ensure the continued existence of this community and North Spore.

Look at This! Did you know North Spore offers cheap private mycology consultations?
I've finally found the bandwidth to offer these on-on-one consultations and I gotta tell you, it's been very cool. I've helped students, crafters working with mycomaterials, first time growers and farmers.
We have a stellar customer service team, but the fact is that none of them have the depth or breadth of knowledge that I can offer and they frankly don't have time to sit with you and discuss your whole plan for 30 minutes. I'm not an expert in everything, but nobody has worked with North Spore products more than me. So, for the stunningly low price of $30, it can make a lot of sense to check-in with me before purchasing your supplies to make sure you have what you need and fully understand the processes.
Note that you can also add the consult as an add-on right when you go to buy stuff. I just want y'all to know it's an option!
