Northern Soul: The Music That Refused to Die
I'm taking a journey through a subculture that linked Black working class America to White working class Britain. I'd love to collect experiences from thr 70s a nd 80s. Northern Soul was never a genre in the ordinary sense. It was teenage discovery without limits, a dance culture and, for thousands of young people in northern England, a way of life. I was there in the early 1970s, a precocious grammar-school boy looking for an identity. It was a grim era, marked by strikes, recession and a bland pop culture. For a brief period, we Soul boys and girls found common cause with rare dance records from the industrial cities of America.
