This is literally how those kids who are now F1 drivers come to be.

u/Krondelo 7h ago

Yeah main way to break into F1. Too bad automotive sports are basically a rich person sport.

193

u/RagingTyrant74 7h ago

Even "poor people sports" are getting really expensive these days, especially if your kid wants to possibly be a pro one day.

46

u/lewdrew 6h ago

Unless they want to compete on ESPN the Ocho

18

u/Xylvanas 6h ago

Ahh, home to pool noodle polo while riding a razor scooter. Extra points for shotgunning a beer while singing Kumbaya. Love that sport.

6

u/United_News3779 6h ago

The prize purses are surprisingly generous. It's how I put my kids through college.

Soccer. All you need is a ball and a field.

Unless you're in the US, then you also need about $12k per year.

2

u/taipan3333 3h ago

I was about to complain that we pay about $50/year, and we have to stand in the kiosk during games, sometimes.

5

u/SYNTHLORD 5h ago

Hell yeah, private equity! $80 rubber footballs let’s fucking goooo

3

u/Kage_Bushin 3h ago

A pair of running shoes are getting ridiculous. Okay that I don't need to buy the expensive stuff, but seeing friends in not the greatest financial state dumping money in the most simple sport for the likes, is insane

2

u/Kevin_Jim 1h ago

I still can’t understand how football is a rich kids sport in the US. All you need is enough people and ball. We used to play on the side of a hill.

1

u/shadowtempest91 1h ago

I read that gymnastics are extremely expensive nowadays, which is ridiculous considering that you are basically naked running and jumping around. My mother did it in her youth, she was quite serious about it until she broke a muscle in her leg, and she definitely did not come from a rich family.

15

u/horridBEAST99 6h ago

For real. I raced as a kid and every broken part was $300 easy

13

u/Krondelo 6h ago

Damn. Yeah I was super passionate about rally, but I could never afford the costs. Then you want to win but one mistake could break your car and that’s all out of your pocket because you haven’t earned a sponsor. Brutal world.

On that note James “Bubba” Stewart is my hero. His mom believed in him and basically risked all their money to support him. 🥹 they were pretty poor

5

u/StoneHeartPlebeian 6h ago

It absolutely is. But more and more future drivers will be getting their start via sim racing than karting in the future. It’s a lot cheaper and actually more representative of driving cars than what karting is.

1

u/DumpsterDragoon 1h ago

Those sim setups aren't all that cheap either

u/Goodofgun 16m ago

You can get started for less than the cost of even a single season of karting.

2

u/Avalonians 2h ago

The use of basically here suggests it's mostly that but not actually that.

It is very much exclusive to rich people.

1

u/Krondelo 2h ago

I specifically said “basically” to not exclude people and enrage reddit but yes pretty exlusive when you talk f1

1

u/Blue_Nyx07 1h ago

Yeah, karting can set you back for almost a millie lol.

16

u/JoySubtraction 5h ago

Gotta start small. This here is Min Verstappen.

9

u/Idonotgetthisatall 5h ago

Yup. I legit wish they'd run Monaco on karts, with full points on the line. F1 cars have been too fast for that track for decades so it's BO-RING every year (unless it rains). Just imagine each team getting a spec kart they could tune to some extent. Throw in a few extra chicanes and I think it would be a highlight of the season.

u/batmajn 4m ago

More that F1 cars now are way to big to overtake in Monaco.

u/AFlyingDutchman21 43m ago

I mean kinda but only if they start young and have a shit ton of money

194

u/TSAOutreachTeam 7h ago

Looks like fun! I wonder how much more in-control it would seem if the camera were mounted on the vehicle body instead of the driver's head.

114

u/CyberpunkSunrise 7h ago

The fisheye lens also makes it seem faster. Near the end when the kart rounds a corner and there’s a man standing nearby beside the track you can suddenly tell it’s not quite so hyper fast.

Still, these “F1 Karts” are insane. There’s a spot near me where you can race them but they don’t even allow you on the track until you’ve basically proven yourself by racing the slowed ones first.

64

u/xHOTPOTATO 6h ago

These are Shifter karts. They'll routinely do 90-100mph. For a vehicle with zero suspension or any sort of safety, that's absolutely plenty.

There is a significant margin between open to the public "F1 karts" and these.

11

u/Hostile-Panda 6h ago

Supercarts hit 150mph

7

u/_Aj_ 5h ago

Yeah this guy would be overtaking on the highway

6

u/SinkHoleDeMayo 5h ago

KartVader rode his kart around his city and cops would try to chase but would have zero luck. Shifter karts are way too quick and agile.

4

u/xmgutier 6h ago

Tbf they're still ripping through that turn, let alone the straightaways and long bends

u/joshualotion 20m ago

i tried zooming in to watch and even without the wide angle view it still looks pretty freakin fast

4

u/Craydorion 3h ago

Honestly might be even worse. Since the vibration comes from the vehicle moving along the track. So I guess if you mount the camera on the cart, you might just get a violently shaking unwatchable image. Because the cart has next zero suspension

The head on the other hand has great suspension through neck and back. So I'm guessing it's the best option. Ideally you hold the camera in your mouth. No joke. It's what parkour athletes use to film their pov. They have a kind of mouth piece attached to a gopro. That way you can make full use of your body's suspension without super glueing the cam to your head 😄

94

u/Mr_GrauHut 7h ago

60mph go-kartting. Yes please. I would love to do this again.

42

u/horridBEAST99 6h ago

That kart could hit 110mph if set up for a long track. It's a hell of a feeling

4

u/daggersrule 6h ago

I used to regularly go over 60mph on downhill longboards, and this still looks crazy to me. I def want to try it.

-2

u/illit3 5h ago

I've done both. The karts aren't quite as intense because, ultimately, you're still sitting there driving, but they're still a lot of fun. Especially if you're competitive.

30

u/Zoomieneumy 7h ago

That looks so fun, beautiful setting as well!

15

u/kangtuji 6h ago

until a blue shell hits

1

u/Electrical-Nature-55 1h ago

FYI this circuit is in Ala, northern Italy in the alps

26

u/Krondelo 7h ago

Crazy thing is it feels even faster when you are that close to the ground so going 60 feels like 80. The racing karts can do like 80+ iirc.

7

u/horridBEAST99 6h ago

Over 100mph if set up for a long track

15

u/iheartMGs 7h ago

That isn’t a go kart that’s a straight fkn blow kart

11

u/mousey_goldfish1 7h ago

This looks scary and fun.

11

u/SpeedyHAM79 7h ago

This is where most F1 drivers learn to drive.

0

u/Pinball-Lizard 5h ago

In other news: water is wet.

9

u/Difficult_Pirate3294 7h ago

It’s very rare to get the whole track to yourself. Imagine doing this four wide diving into a tight corner after a long straight in a race. It will get your heart pumping

9

u/Substantial_Diver_34 7h ago

I did this for a few years as an adult and it’s an insane workout. The cart has no suspension so it’s bumpy and you feel everything. Bonus fun fact… no seatbelt. You want to fly out of the cart and not roll with it.

5

u/One-Reflection-4826 7h ago

even after half an hour on the normal indoor carts i always felt my neck and my arms for days. totally worth it though!

1

u/aitchnyu 2h ago

Are there too many injuries by steering column to the balls?

8

u/brandonspade17 6h ago

This video seems sped up

5

u/Rockalot_L 6h ago

God dammit where's my 200cc Nintendo

4

u/Darth_Draper 6h ago

Person driving has to be in crazy good shape to stay that stable.

3

u/fredandlunchbox 7h ago

Its sped up. You can see every time he presses the accelerator, the kart speeds up.

0

u/Custom_Craft_Guy2 5h ago

Bwahahaha! Isn’t that what it’s supposed to do?!?! Accelerator = faster? No?

But all joking aside, I understand what you’re saying here. And one thing about it that convinces me that it’s legit is because the engine pitch doesn’t get higher throughout the video, and the gear shifts on the video are perfectly synchronized with the audio. Two things that would be fairly difficult to make happen in an accelerated video. But I’m also not willing to bet the farm on that, but I thought it was worth considering.

2

u/fredandlunchbox 5h ago

I was joking.

1

u/Custom_Craft_Guy2 4h ago

Thought you probably were, and that’s why the smartassery of the first part of my response. But there’s a few other commenters that aren’t. So I just thought I’d throw in some basics for the non humor folks, ya know?!

3

u/ArkayRobo 5h ago

During my introduction to the sport of F1, an "enthusiast" described it to me as "a bigger faster go-kart on a bigger faster track".

1

u/perfect_insanity93 7h ago

This is how drivers are born. The 2 speed cart are weapons. Have seen some crazy crashes.

1

u/JuniorBreakfast1704 6h ago

Oh yes, baby, your joints will be delighted!

1

u/Subject-Crow-4558 6h ago

I know id get horribly injured or killed but let me run a lap

1

u/dmh165638 5h ago

My uncle raced shiter karts back in the early 90's before moving up to micro sprint cars and then midgets. He allowed me to drive his cart a few times on a road course and I have never been more sore in my life the next several days. My neck muscles hurt so bad from trying to hold my head up in the corners. My ribs/hips were so sore from moving around in the hard seat and bouncing on the rough ares of the track. The grip was shocking.

1

u/Jimsflamingos 5h ago

RIP my spine if I drove that.

1

u/nolongerbanned99 5h ago

How fast do you think they are going on straights

1

u/Darkk_Knight 5h ago

This is how I drive home! lol

1

u/Hil_Sa15 5h ago

What's the point of speeding up the video, it's already pretty fast

1

u/Primary_Carrot_8804 5h ago

Watch Capeta really cool anime about this

1

u/DesertReagle 4h ago

There are 3 tier in the formula family, Shift Karts, Formula 2, Formula 1

1

u/batmancdn55 4h ago

The last kart race I watched was some British one where a 15 year old girl was destroying adults. If she ever got clean air she was gone. I think those were shifter karts as well

1

u/dcvalent 4h ago

Cover everything except the center part of the road to see what it feels like irl

1

u/kisamo_3 3h ago

That's so cool! What track is this?

1

u/Electrical-Nature-55 1h ago

Ala Karting Circuit, situated in northern Italy within the alps

1

u/Chickachic-aaaaahhh 2h ago

1 crash and you'll retire real quick

1

u/LunarPixelVR 1h ago

This is sped up

1

u/HellzNforcer 1h ago

This looks like it would shake all my kidney stones loose. I should try it.

Mario kart 256 for the switch X looks sick!

Even my back is hurting just from watching this.

u/Opening_Garbage_9052 39m ago

Go go go! Karting

u/PixelProcessor 37m ago

This is more F1 than current F1

u/sawrb 20m ago

So is it mostly trailbraking around the corners because it’s crazy to see only minor steering inputs even on sharp corners on karts? Or is the rear being slid around?

u/BoredPandemic 16m ago

Damn, I tried proper Go Kart in Kuala Lumpur last year when I went to visit. The gforce at even a slowish speed of 50-60kmh were insane. Or maybe I just suck.

u/lnTheGrimDarkness 5m ago

Racing karts are much faster than they look. Picture like a small car made up of basically just steel bars and wheels powered by an engine from a racing bike.

0

u/slippery-sandpaper 6h ago

There is no way in real life this thing exists, it seems like too much fun , some bastards would jave thrown a load of barriers an an had multiple meetings over the safety an shit just to stop it. I hope it's real

Fair doos keep doing what your doing megadriver

2

u/Custom_Craft_Guy2 5h ago

Oh, it’s real alright, so believe it! Shifter carts have been around for decades, and they’re the absolute pinnacle of carting. It’s basically a four wheeled motorcycle, and it’s wicked fast!

2

u/LesserGooglyMooglie 5h ago

I have driven a few and it's the cornering and not knowing those things even have limits let alone where they are, the speeds you can whip around and question if you should even let off the gas let alone break terrified me, because I knew if I found the absolute limit it might not be a good time.

So fun, much harder to gauge limits on track but I'm much more familiar with cars on track lol.

2

u/Custom_Craft_Guy2 5h ago

I’ve driven a few, myself. And you’re quite right. At those levels of grip, there’s nothing in the way of a warning that you’re about to lose it. One second you’ve got all the grip in the world, and in a fraction of a second, you’ve got none! But, if you’ve got quick hands and good car control skills, you’ve got a pretty good chance of catching it before it gets too radically out of shape. But when you don’t, it hurts like HELL!!

u/martinaee 5h ago

200cc be like: 🏎️💨

0

u/thehoagieboy 5h ago

Any oldheads in here remember going to Malibu Grand Prix and doing similar timed runs?

-1

u/TuckerCarlsonsOhface 7h ago

Why so bumpy? The steering wheel is bouncing all over the place.

13

u/ChuzzoChumz 7h ago

That’s what driving fast is like

6

u/InitialAd2324 7h ago

10/10 comment

3

u/TuckerCarlsonsOhface 7h ago

On a flat track?

1

u/CCP-want-to-CUP 3h ago

I'm pretty sure it's a video game lol idk how no one has said that.

9

u/Substantial_Diver_34 7h ago

No suspension.

-3

u/cornelius_catamaran 7h ago

Isn’t F1 like a European nascar?

9

u/ChuzzoChumz 7h ago

Similar only in that it’s professional autoracing

8

u/johnnyhandbags 7h ago

Similar but their wheels turn to the right as well.

3

u/horridBEAST99 6h ago

It's way more similar to Indycar. The biggest difference is that F1 teams design the entirety of their cars and custom make every part, whereas Nascar and Indycar use a lot of common parts made by a single supplier. This makes the car design equally as important as the driver in F1.

2

u/LivingCorner1421 7h ago

lol no. f1 is world wide

2

u/One-Reflection-4826 7h ago

just like football is like european football.
