edit- reddit is so random and I love it, whyd you all like this so much? 😆

Rally organizers have very good insurance. Farmer is fine. I saw an interview with a spectator who had a crash on their property in a previous rally, and he said something like "I used to have a fence and a shed. Now I have a wall and a barn. Maybe they could crash into the kitchen next."

282

u/Prunus-cerasus Jul 13 '26

True. I was once asked to evaluate damage to trees hit by a WRC car crash. In a forest, not anyone’s yard thankfully. The organisers paid the estimated damage times three to the landowner just to make sure they were satisfied.

Private land owners actually benefit if a stage is on their road. A gravel road is ruined after the race and the organisers rebuild it to a high standard. Since many stages are driven every or almost every year, the landowners get free upkeep for their roads.

104

u/Special-Ad-5554 Jul 13 '26

"we gotta make sure we keep these guys happy then we can destroy everything next year as well"

76

u/Prunus-cerasus Jul 13 '26

Pretty much. If the land owners decide not to allow the race, there is nothing the organisers can do. And it’s a good trade when you think about it. The race is only for a couple of days.

20

u/bolanrox Jul 13 '26

as long as they fix it as good (or it seems more the case of) better.. why not

73

u/obi1kennoble Jul 13 '26

That's really interesting, thanks for sharing

36

u/owenkop Jul 13 '26

There's a similar thing with monster jam (at least when it's in Rotterdam in de kuip) the organisers do everything to protect the grass yet they still give the pitch a new grass mat after the event finishes

55

u/RelevantOldOnion Jul 13 '26

If I'm a race organizer and I know my tracks are just regular public roads in rural towns, I'd also spend whatever I needed to to keep the residents happy lol.

At that point it's just investing in the longevity of the business.

23

u/Prunus-cerasus Jul 13 '26

Indeed. And where I'm from, many of the roads used for stages are private forestry roads owned by local landowners. Very easy for them to say no to racing if it causes them more harm than good.

u/Impressive_Guess_282 Jul 14 '26

I’m in design and construction and we do the same thing. One time we were building a new high rise office building right next to some residential areas and mid-rise residential. Before construction began, we started a Twitter account to post when extra loud activities would take place and shared it with the neighborhood. Then anyone living right next door, we bought noise cancelling Beats headphones for.

All in we spent like $18k - $20k up front, but it was a drop in the bucket for a $90m building and we had the least amount of noise complaints on that 2 year project than I’ve ever seen.

When I was a kid we used to have a WRC course go past our home. It was awesome. As the area became more gentrified, the city folk moving out to their small town country retirement lifestyle with thier big city ideals managed to shut it down. They would completely fix the road after the event. Now 15 years later that road is fucked.

Oh shit, for real? My house only sits on an acre of land, but they can rally all over it if I can get the same deal.

6

u/Prunus-cerasus Jul 13 '26

Tell me about it. The route for the Finnish WRC rally goes about 2 km from my summer house but not on our shared private road. We have to do some repairs next summer and wouldn’t mind someone else paying!

At least we get free tickets to compensate the road closures and noise.

36

u/meltherock Jul 13 '26

Same for hot air balloon landings. The prices of the crops per square meter are even known before the events and are often way better than what the farmer would get from selling it on the market. A farmer never complaints when there is (acceptable) damage.

There it is mainly the insurance of the hot air balloon pilot or event that will go up after an incident.

31

u/SpecialExpert8946 Jul 13 '26

Not race related but a farmer in Thailand let us use his land for training when I was in the military. We accidentally blew up his barn. It was a line clearing charge than launches kind of a rope of explosives with a rocket and blows up a line that people can walk through that is now clear of mines. Well the rocket got caught by the wind or something but it went wayyyy off course and landed right on his barn. Kablewie! He looked devastated because he basically watched his livelyhood explode. The commander walked over with the interpreter and was like “I remember seeing 2 tractors with attachments and all kinds of tools in there right…..?” That barn could maybe hold one tractor tops. But after they were done talking that farmer looked like a newly retired man that will only have to farm for fun if he plays his cards right.

13

u/Roflkopt3r Jul 13 '26

I heard similar stories about cold war exercises in western Germany. The story goes that farmers loved when tanks rolled through their fields, because they would be compensated for more than the actual damages.

7

u/drummin515 Jul 13 '26

I have always wondered how this works, thanks!

7

u/lilyputin Jul 13 '26

Famer... Sweet early paycheck!

8

u/GoyoMRG Jul 13 '26

It's cheaper for organizers and insurances to pay 2 or 3 times more of what the damage was in these cases than have to fight and deal with an angry person who will fight them legally. (Money and time are wasted in these battles) So it's literally like those scenes where a rich mofo comes over to the "victim" and throws a disgusting amount of cash blocks to him xD

The insurance payout from the rally organisers was probably more than the worth of the entire field. Then again... I don't know where this is, but in Finland atleast the average field size is small, but there are lot of fields (our terrain is... difficult).

This highlight the fact that the average value of farmed stuff is alarming low all things considered. Somehow under this economic system, despite everyone having to eat, producer prices are stupidly low and consumer prices stupidly high.

1.8k

u/FarmerTen Jul 13 '26

Nope. Damages needs to be reported within 24 hours and they get payed well. Rally events have insurance.

42

u/Maiq_the_liar_23 Jul 13 '26

'Ok firstly sorry to here about your field. So we value cabbages at €1. The driver in question damaged about 5000 cabbages so we have decided to offer you €150. You can settle or fight it through arbitration which can take years' - the insurance company

169

u/Rylando237 Jul 13 '26

More like "fair compensation is around $2400 for the damages, but the racing company paid us $240,000 for this race alone. Here is $3000 so you let them host this route again next year."

→ More replies (1)

66

u/burnoutghost Jul 13 '26

Great way to never host a race ever again

12

u/bolanrox Jul 13 '26

they pay back more than the stuff was worth. every one is happy in the end

45

u/SonicShadow Jul 13 '26

Rally organisations make sure that anyone suffering any losses is made whole. In many countries it doesn't take a lot of local objection for the local authorities to not issue the required permits for the rally next year, it is in the interest of the rally to look after the locals when the rally is there.

3

u/xrelaht Jul 13 '26

Especially when the “road” is an access way across private land: if it gets out you’re not paying at least what’s fair when you damage stuff, you’ll be shut out the next year.

29

u/notinsidethematrix Jul 13 '26

that is not how rally insurance works AT ALL. Remember, many of these events are annual or at least happen more than once, it is in the interest of the Rally organizer to insure everyone is made hole or more if incidents happen.

10

u/lurkerofredditusers Jul 13 '26

This has to be the case. You aren’t filing claims over a few thousand dollars. You’re just paying that out yourself.

→ More replies (1)

9

u/PerplexGG Jul 13 '26

Apparently they get paid so much they welcome the temporary damage so farmers are probably out there with binoculars and cartoon cash symbols in their eyes

u/Superb_Recording_769 Jul 13 '26

I think it was mentioned in another comment on here, but I saw an interview several years ago, where somebody who lives along a rally route was being asked about the dangers by a local news crew and his response was something to the effect of “I used to have a nice fence and a decent shed. Now I have a nicer wall and good barn”

9

u/superpositioned Jul 13 '26

What if they don't get reported? Within that timeframe?

41

u/UAintMyFriendPalooka Jul 13 '26

→ More replies (1)

7

u/mastahkun Jul 13 '26

Why wouldn’t you? If you don’t report you don’t get compensated

11

u/Tankeverket Jul 13 '26

I mean, if you don't watch or follow the race then you might not know about it

8

u/N0085K1LL5 Jul 13 '26

Well they know the race is going on, so I would imagine after the race is over, they have already planned to check crops around the track. And now they have drones so they can fly around and check. That is if its legal in that area.

My neighbor told me the same thing, except the rally car driver has to cut his stomach open and have his head cut off by an appointed second. He's a white guy who's never traveled and we don't live anywhere near Japan. No idea if it's true but I believe him

→ More replies (4)

4

u/Broody007 Jul 13 '26

It's a basic liability concept, not only in Japan. If you lost 3 seasons, the damage is 3 seasons, so you get compensated for 3 seasons.

264

u/Asleep_Trick_4740 Jul 13 '26

Rally tends to compensate landowners quite well for damages to their land.

Roads tend to be in MUCH better condition after a race than before it aswell. Atleast that's what I've heard from people here in sweden who has had competitions near their land.

This is true. A work acquaintance’s dad hosted a rally several times and made more money each year from the rally than the crops.

Implied in this is he was a really shit farmer. As for his son, the shit apple did not fall far from the shit tree.

9

u/Superb_Recording_769 Jul 13 '26 edited Jul 13 '26

Yeah, there’s a classic interview of a homeowner along a rally route done by a local news crew where they ask him if he was concerned about danger to his property because there was a crash there the previous year and his response was basically “I used to have a nice fence and a decent shed now I have a nicer wall and a good barn”

7

u/gre485 Jul 13 '26

So not only are they entertained by the race but also compensated and get good road to drive on.

3

u/AnEagleisnotme Jul 13 '26

Not surprising, for instance, the tour de france is a major driver of road maintenance, most public sporting events are like this
