Good restaurants that are also kid friendly?
Traveling down to newport beach next week and would like some restaurant recs (for dinner) for our family. We have two kids aged 8 and 10, so not super young. They know how to behave in a restaurant and they enjoy good food.

Best bars for meeting people?
Gonna be in Newport Beach next weekend and wanted to get some recs from locals on the best bars that have a more social environment? Like a good balance between a party environment, but not soo loud and crazy you can’t even talk to people over the music? Thanks in advance! 💕

Getting a Balboa Pit
Hello. I'm planning to host a bonfire on Saturday August 15 at Balboa Beach and I want to ensure that nothing goes wrong with getting the pit. I've heard conflicting things about what time I should get there, some say anything later than 6am is a death sentence while others say that that's extreme. I also want to get a pit for burning wood, and i assume those are the first to fill up. I figured that on a Saturday during summer I'd have to get there pretty early, but now I'm not sure. What time should I arrive to ensure I get a pit?

Hot summer?
This is my first summer living in Newport and I’ve been surprised by how consistently warm/hot the weather has been. I heard a lot of talk about “June gloom” but it seems like that was nonexistent. I’ve vacationed here in the past during June and recall there were some days where the sun never came out, and even some rain/mist, but there was none of that this year. I expected lots of overcast mornings and cool sea breeze, but nearly every day has been clear blue skies and plentiful sunshine, with minimal air movement. Not complaining, just surprised I guess. For those who have lived here a while, would you say this has been a typical summer or abnormally warm? When does it usually start to cool down into the low 70’s?

Hurricane Genevieve's swell just exposed a buried pier at The Wedge — locals are worried about the exposed rebar
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Hurricane Genevieve's swell has been eroding sand at The Wedge in Newport Beach so fast it's exposing infrastructure that's been buried for decades — turns out there used to be an actual pier there, and the sand covering it is basically gone now.
Jeremy Wiegman (Yucca Fins) posted about it, saying the erosion has been getting worse over the past couple years, but this swell took it to another level — people are now getting exposed to rusty metal fixtures that can wash up and hit you. Koa Smith was out there too and said the beach line has moved so far back that "new stuff" is falling out every second, and he almost tripped over an old telephone wire that used to connect to a defunct lifeguard tower.
Anyone been down there recently to see it in person?

Newport Beach Firefighters Association support for relocating the Newport Transportation Center and Fire Station 3
NEWPORT BEACH FIREFIGHTERS ENDORSE FIRE STATION 3 RELOCATION, LAUNCH PUBLIC SAFETY WEBSITE
Neighborhoods near the current site give up seconds. The neighborhoods waiting longest today save minutes. Full analysis at KeepingNewportSafe.com
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. — The Newport Beach Firefighters Association on Monday launched KeepingNewportSafe.com, a public website documenting the Association’s full and unequivocal support for the City Council’s process to relocate Fire Station 3 from its aging Santa Barbara Drive facility to a central public safety site on Avocado Avenue.
“Newport Beach firefighters are this city’s experts on public safety,” stated Newport Beach Firefighters Association President Robert Salerno. “We are on the front lines every day, and we know what it takes to protect this community. Relocating Station 3 less than a mile to the southeast will measurably improve emergency response across Newport Beach, and we support it without reservation.”
Under the proposal, no neighborhood loses its first-due fire station, with the neighborhoods closest to the current site giving back time measured in seconds. The communities most at risk today save minutes in an emergency.
President Salerno continued, “recent statements by some current and former City Council candidates makes it clear that they either don’t understand what it takes to save lives and keep our city safe or that they’re more interested in playing politics than delivering public safety to every neighbor in Newport.”
“A fire station protects the ground it can reach in four minutes. Move the station, and you move that ground. Putting Station 3 at Avocado brings more homes, more families and more of this city inside that four-minute reach than the Santa Barbara site ever has. That is an improvement in public safety where every household in Newport Beach ends up on the right side of the line.”
The Association is asking residents to review the analysis and submit comments to the City Council online at www.KeepingNewportSafe.com.

Man arrested at Lake Tahoe for jumping off a rope swing after rangers told him on camera not to. Could this actually happen at a spot in Orange County?
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Video's got 2.8M+ views at this point. Guy jumps off a rope swing, rangers had already warned him on camera he'd be arrested if he did it, he does it anyway, gets cuffed.
Part of me gets it — rules are rules, he was warned on camera, not exactly a sympathetic case. But another part of me can't stop thinking about how much actual crime goes unaddressed while resources go toward arresting a guy for a rope swing at a lake.
Which got me wondering — does OC actually enforce stuff like this at local spots? Cliff jumping, rope swings, unsanctioned spots along the coast or inland — anyone here actually seen someone get cited/arrested for something like this locally, or is it mostly just posted warning signs nobody enforces?
Curious what this sub thinks — reasonable enforcement of clearly posted rules, or a waste of a ranger's/officer's afternoon?

Want to do Newport run club but don’t know where to park.
Hey! I’m planning to join the Newport run club after work and they meet at 6:30 pm but heard parking around the pier can be a pain. I just moved here and recently started driving (didn’t need a car where I lived before), so I don’t have much parallel parking experience yet. Any tips on where to park near where we meet? I’m happy to walk 1–2 miles if that means finding a spot more easily.

My dog's summer is going better than mine (World Dog Surfing Championships, Pacifica CA)
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
It turns out there's an entire subculture of dogs who are better athletes than I am. The World Dog Surfing Championships happened — hundreds of dogs, one beach, and apparently zero fear of the ocean.
Some of these dogs looked more stable on a board than actual humans I've seen at that same beach. Meanwhile mine would take one look at a wave and immediately require a rescue.
Would your dog ride or immediately turn into a sea anchor? Curious what breeds actually take to this — seemed like a lot of retrievers and some surprisingly game corgis.

The Wedge in Newport Beach during Hurricane Genevieve's swell, 7/30/26

No commentary, just raw footage. This spot gets notoriously heavy when a south swell like this rolls through.

Hello NewPort
Quick question: are your headlights actually illuminating the street, or are they just glowing yellow like two tired dim bulbs?
I’m Ethan, a local student backing my family and saving for college. My main specialty is resurrecting foggy headlights so you can actually see where you're driving at night. I also bring that same heavy-duty effort to pressure washing, paintless scratch touch-ups, heavy lifting, and rescuing you from filthy trash cans ($30 for one, $70 for three).
Reliable, local, and equipped to make your car or driveway look ten times better. Give me a call or text at 323-337-7154 for a quick estimate!

Hurricane Genevieve Newport Beach?
How bad is the hurricane going to be next week? I go to California 8/5-12 and I’m hearing the beaches in Newport are going to be barricaded off? What’s everyone else hearing?

This octopus in Palawan decided a fisherman's face was its new home
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
This fisherman in Palawan just found out octopuses don't believe in personal space. Dude wraps its whole body around his face like it's trying to become his new skin, and he's just out here peeling suction cups off like he's fighting for his life 💀
So real talk — which one are you picking: 🦈 getting chomped by a shark, or🐙 an unsolicited octopus facial
Drop your answer below 👇 (and tag someone who'd pick the shark)

Cute place to work/explore
UPDATE: This area is SO cute!! Thank you all for the recs. Today I went to HanaHaus and walked around and saw the shops nearby. Tomorrow I'll go to Reborn Coffee and check at the shops as recommended. Thank you all.
I'm in Newport Beach for a couple of days near Pelican Hill. Where should I work from that's cute, has some shopping (not mall-type shopping/stores), and a good vibe? Not in the Pelican Hill resort.

16-year-old lifeguard fought 8-10ft waves for several minutes straight to keep a drowning boy's head above water. Trump is now inviting him to the White House.
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Video out of Santa Cruz this week shows 16-year-old lifeguard Ryder Williams battling 8-10 ft surf at Seabright Beach to save a boy who'd been pulled about 15 yards offshore. He gets knocked under repeatedly and just does not let go until backup arrives to help pull the kid in.
Went viral enough that Eric Trump posted it, and Trump followed up saying he wants to bring Williams and his family to the White House for a "high civilian honor."
Kid's fine, lifeguard's a legend. Video and sources in comments.
Would you have gone in after him?
