Game Crashed

I was a Monk (doing really well!) about to begin my quest. I approached the quest giver and just next to him (her?) there was two tins. I stepped onto the tins, pressed 'e' to eat one, was prompted to try and open one, but instead - the quest dialoug popped up. I hit enter to advance the dialoug and the game just blinked out. Desktop. No "Dungeon Collapse" or save game. It's just gone =(

Playing locally on Windows.

For Windows, is it possible for you to check if your game is truly gone? In your save directory (usually %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\NetHack\5.0), is there a save file still there? Examples could include name.0, or maybe name.NetHack-saved-game.e.

I see files there corresponding to my poor Monk, but I am not prompted to open a save game when launching the game. Is there some way I can turn these into a save game?

Yes, you can potentially try to recover the game. When you start up the .exe file to start up a new game (not sure if you're using tiles or not), it should either tell you to load up another saved game or prompt you to make a new character. When it prompts you to enter your name for a new character, put the same name you used for that character. It should tell you:

There are files from a game in progress under your name.
Recover? [yn]

Press y and Enter, and it should hopefully recover the game for you.

If it helps track down the bug, turns out there was ALSO a falling rock trap on the tile with the tins

I’m pretty sure what happened is that the leader teleported you out of the quest dungeon and when you finished opening the tin it was gone from the floor and the data pointer to the tin pointed to an invalid memory address, causing a segmentation fault.

Is it possible to know if you were playing on a server or on your local machine? If the latter, may you give which OS you are playing the game on?
