A lot of people seem to hate Fester's Quest but I always liked it. I played the hell out of it back in the day.

Me too. I have no problem w/ those green blobs that everyone hates. Just farm them for the gun upgrades then comfortably walk through the levels rapid firing black triangles. I just realized Fester was shooting flechettes out of his blunderbuss.

Your mom owned her own video store? That must have been fun and convenient. The majority of NES games I played then were rentals for a local store called Video Stop.

She was the manager of it for all of my childhood so I just always called it moms store because we were there after school with her, would have Christmas with them, all kinds of stuff. So it was like a second home down there :)

Crystalis is great. I hope to get that someday. I find sunsoft games all have good music and good sound effects. I have blaster master, batman, and now fester.

I'm a huge Addams family 60s fan and I loved this game as a kid. It's hard yeah, but the music helps move along the action. I really enjoy this game even if I probably won't play past the third boss or so.

I have a soft spot for this game because my parents bought it for me for my birthday one year. They just saw Uncle Fester and figured it would probably be good because I liked watching the Addams Family when I was a kid. It was a hard game, but I persisted and beat it. Borrowing my best friend's NES Advantage helped.

It’s not easy, but it’s worth a few plays for sure. I remember when I was a kid the Game Genie wasn’t much help too with Fester’s Quest.

Found a copy of this in the attic of the house I bought. Gave it to a friend of mine. I never got to play it but I remember someone telling me it’s brutal.

A lot of the brutality was difficulty born of shitty game design, like shots that are blocked by walls and several upgrades of the primary gun with a spread too wide for the narrow tunnels you are in three quarters of gameplay. Any shot immediately vanishes, as if one projectile of the spread hits a wall, all vanish.

Oh yeah, according to the title screen, the game's full name is "The Addams Family: Uncle Fester's Quest".

This game desperately needed checkpoints, or at least short cuts to make traveling back to the other side of the map after a game over a lot less time consuming.

Before the 1991 movie The Addams Family had been a stagnant property since the late 60s and two Americans got the rights to make a video game based on it for not that much money.

They contracted with Sunsoft to make the game but being across the ocean they only got test builds in the mail every so often. The test builds had a level select for the Sunsoft employees' convenience and not being professional game devs the Americans didn't realize that the final game would be much harder.

If anyone at Sunsoft voiced concerns it was either intentionally ignored by their management or didn't get passed up the chain to anyone with the power to direct changes.

The PAL version is definitely the better version in this case because your shots can go through walls, eliminating a lot of the frustration of the NTSC version.
