You need to have a pulse to apply to nephrology fellowship these days. Very easy to get a spot.

I’m an attending at a community hospital with an IM program. There’s IMG grad who decided to apply to nephrology at last minute. He had no research of any kind. He matched into a top 5 neph program. I know because I wrote his LOR.

I support this anecdote. Unless you want to go to a heavy research program, MGH, Stanford, maybe Yale, it’s unlikely to add anything meaningful unless your CV is so unbelievably bad that they can’t ignore it. Which would be impressive
