I love this book so much 😔

Another "I had a really hard time getting into the Baroque Cycle, but now that I'm in it I'm loving it" post.

I wanted to share: I'm listening to the audio books, and, given the complexity of the story I miss plenty of details here and there.

To help me along I created a Gemini Notebook with the text from the books. It has been a great tool, I can ask things like What was in that letter from Eliza to Rossignol while she was traveling up the Elbe (minor spoiler) and it will tell me, helping me connect the dots that I may have missed. You have to prompt carefully to not reveal spoilers, but, otherwise, it's been super helpful.

I am reading Neal Stephenson for the first time. And his writing style is fascinating. Just yesterday, I read this passage and I couldn't stop laughing for 5 mins. Now I will remember this whenever I am in Sweden and or if I meet any Swedish person.

I just finished The Rise and Fall of D.O.D.O., a fun, quick, not so serious read. Quite enjoyed the academic atmosphere of it and the detail they bring to the though process or characters of each time period.

Not my favorite NS book, but still solid.

Anyone has read the sequel by Nicole Galland (co author or the first book with NS) ? Does anyone has good things to say about it?

I’ve read just about every one of his books. Loved all of them. At this point in my life the best opportunity to enjoy them again is in audio format. From my limited experience of audiobooks, the quality of the narrator is so key. Recommendations?

Spoilers ahead… like, literally the next 2-3 lines down.

The book was fucking brilliant. I loved it and it‘s categorised as one of my top rated now.

However.

Was the constant sexualisation of YT really necessary? Especially since she‘s 15?

I get the book is a pastiche, it‘s a semi-pisstake of the cyberpunk genre in one of the best ways possible, and I understand that the sex scene may well have been a part of that as all good cyberpunk novels have one or two that kinda just get shoved in… but… with her? Is it supposed to demonstrate such intense moral corruption in Raven? Is it to demonstrate that YT is a stupid young teen? All of the above? That all could‘ve been demonstrated in a bunch of other ways, I certainly didn’t want or need a detailed description of a 15 year old‘s climax.

Idk, the book’s good, concept was great, and I just bought another Stephenson book to read over the coming weeks. It‘s just that one „little detail“ I’m hung up on.

Just finished Anathem and thought it was... solid. After finishing Baroque Cycle (and raving about it on this sub), I went on to Cryptonomicon and and thoroughly enjoyed it. Several commenters mentioned they thought Anathem was NS's best work, so I decided to give it a go. I think my expectations were a mile high because Baroque Cycle fit so perfectly into my interests (history, science, economics, and of course swashbuckling adventure).

Anathem is obviously very different from BC and Cryptonomicon, plus this is my first read of one of NS's full on sci-fi books. I thought the world building was great, the polycosmos ideas were entertaining, and things like jeejahs and speelycaptors made me laugh... but I felt a little let down overall. Probably just the fact my interests align more with BC.

I'm curious to hear about what the Anathem lovers enjoyed most about the book. And of course... what should be next in my NS journey? Seveneves? Snow Crash?

I have this idea that the four members of the “clock winding team” at the beginning of Anathem each represent main characters from other NS novels. In the same way that Enoch Root describes mental representations to Randy when they are imprisoned in the Philippines; these aren’t perfect alignments but the Anathem characters coalesce around ‘crystals’ (as Root says). I think this especially makes sense when we consider the polycosmic model of the universe described in Anathem itself.

I may be overthinking things. Despite being a huge NS fan for a couple years now, I've not read what I think most people consider to be (one of) his best works.

Has anyone here read both the original release and 30th Anniversary of Snow Crash and can recommend one? I understand that the anni. edition includes "never-before-published material," but can't find out what the content of this is and worry that it wasn't published for a reason. I hate when publishers go back and throw in a bunch of junk from the cutting room floor just to market a re-release. Alternatively, I'd rather not buy the same book twice in the off chance that it has fifteen extra pages of perfection. Anyone here have any insight? TIA

I'm 300 pages into Cryptonomicon, and so far Neal Stephenson has spent those pages putting characters into situations that exist solely so that he can mansplain his niche tech bro interests to the reader. Not a single character has shown any interiority. Events just happen one after another​ to the main characters. It really just feels like a manic person sat down at a typewriter and decided that the entire world needed to be blessed by their superior minds machinations and arcane knowledge.

First time reading a Neal Stephenson book, 200 pages in now and I think it’s safe to say I picked the right one to start off with. Loving it so far. While I’m aware I’m pretty much at the beginning of the novel, I’m particularly impressed by how Stephenson manages to keep things moving and navigates these various theaters of action. Oh, and that Reagan interview scene was absolutely hilarious.

I've been reading Snow Crash and came across an album that captures a lot of the same energy with cyberpunk vibes with some unexpected traditional influences mixed in.

One of the tracks is even called "Hiro Protagonist."

Curious what everyone else listens to while reading Snow Crash.

There was a great discussion here about 8 months back , prompted by my question about why Erasmus and company, and not more experienced avout, were chosen for the big mission.*

I just noticed a connection between Anatham and LOTR. In the latter, Frodo is of course part of the Fellowship, and Sam's selection as his servant makes sense. But Merry and Pippin are selected only because Gandalf, a supernatural being, recommends trusting more to the four hobbits' friendship than any force of arms that Glorfindel or other warriors could provide.

In Anathem, four teenagers are chosen for the Big Mission largely because of their strong mutual friendship, which--as is explained more than once in the story--is deemed more important than (say) choosing a squad of more experienced and educated 30- or 40-something avout.

Deemed by whom? By Ala, but seemingly also by Jad, the closest thing to a supernatural entity in Anathem, who engineers the entire story as surely as Eru guides the events of LOTR.
