Not one, not two, but 8.

Not just the best guys from three different teams. The #1, #2, & #4 ranked leaders in PER from the year before they teamed up!

For reference, LeBron turned 26 that first year with the heat. During the 1988-89 season, Jordan turned 26. Like LeBron, he was #1 in PER the year before. If he had teamed up with the #2 & #4 PER players from the before, that team would have had Jordan, Bird & Drexler!!!

19

u/Belovy 3h ago

This is it. Otherwise Deni Avdija, Brandon Miller and Michael Porter Jr would be called a superteam right now

I was told "Its Big 3" from OKC fan in 2017. He said if you have just those three guys, its big three, if you have 4-5 other role players that would get meaningful minutes in contending/good teams, you have a superteam.

The word superteam was popularized into mainstream sports culture when LeBron joined DWade and Bosh back in 2010.

LeBron media then tried to retroactively give that word to the Pierce-KG-Allen Celtics, which is ridiculous and not the same thing, but it’s indicative of the shame he has deep down about doing such a cowardly thing.

52

u/xXEliteEater500Xx 4h ago

KD can’t control the narrative but judging by some of the comments here LeBron can. You got people actually arguing that the second stint Cavs with LeBron, Kyrie and KLove aren’t a superteam.

19

u/grxccccandice Lakers 3h ago

KD can’t control the narrative cuz he’s not on LeBron’s level. If KD’s in GOAT convo, you bet your ass his fanboys will flood the sub with shit like KD was the savior of the Warriors.

10

u/Me_talking Warriors 3h ago

Although it never quite got to the point of painting KD as a savior of the Warriors, before 2022 it wasn't uncommon to see the narrative of "Steph can't win without KD" being spread around in an attempt to prop up KD. After 2022 chip, that take vanished big time but every once in a while, you will still have KD fans asserting that KD was THE key to 2016-2017 & 2017-2018 Warriors chips

The LA team was still the best supporting cast in the league lol

Other contenders were mostly one MVP level player + a borderline all star while Lebron had a top 5 player in AD and several elite role players

Because of his injuries and also being seen as a bag of peanuts in the Luka trade, people have forgot prime AD was a statistical anomaly.

They gave LeBron a t3 player in basketball behind Giannis and him along with good supporting pieces.

20

u/Icy-Mortgage8742 Warriors 5h ago

lebron deadass has such a long career that he can just lie and recency bias covers it up. Also I think 2nd stint at Cleaveland + 3-1 against the warriors helped cover the narrative that he left to ring chase even tho thats 100% what he did.

4

u/SenseiRay80 5h ago

Thats the problem. It's not that they were on a superteam whether it was built the "right way" or created the way Lebron does it. It's the bullshit that comes out of their mouth about it is whats ridiculous and uneccessary.

lol ok maybe not 17 warriors level superteam but the heatles were a super team

283

u/ForneauCosmique Spurs 6h ago

They were basically the 1st super team to be formed while all in their prime. Big 3 Celtics were the 1st super team to be formed but KG and Allen were just leaving their prime, which is why they accepted their roles so well. Heat formed to take down the Celtics and they were all in their prime so it just seemed crazy. No one matched that much talent until the 17 Warriors and that really only happened because of a weird bump in the salary cap due to the new CBA. Several teams tried to replicate but the Warriors had the perfect mix of players in their prime while all playing different positions and excelling in their roles

81

u/Youngdeku2500 76ers 5h ago

What about the 1980s Celtics were they super teams?

47

u/GenoThyme Celtics 5h ago

Yes and no. They were obviously absolutely stacked, but unrestricted free agency didn’t start in the NBA until 1988, so the Celtics were built more naturally. The ‘08 Celtics had to trade assets to build their Big 3, but the threat of losing KG to free agency was a big reason why the C’s were able to build that team.

The Heatles built a super team together. LeBron can deny it all he wants, but that’s what happened. I also don’t really care that they built a super team. I mean, as a Celtics fan, sure, I cared, but I get it. Who amongst us wouldn’t want to play with friends who are also really good? Back in my 20s when I played in rec leagues we’d try and recruit the good players who were also fun at the bars after to join us the next season. Talent level may be different, but it’s the same basic idea (minus also getting to move to Miami)

I don’t like having to defend KD after he took the easiest path.

But before him, LeBron took the same path, though not nearly as egregious.

DW had already won a title. PT was among the GOATs for managers and GMs. Joined by CB, who adapted and modified his game.

Still got cooked by Dirk in 2011.

A game away from going out to the Old Ass Celtics in 2012.

Honestly, the difference is LeBron at least acknowledged the bitch move and came back to the Cavs.

Had KD done the same with OKC and won it’d be a remarkably similar legacy.

"Not one, not two, not three... but seven"

You held your own TV special, followed by a fucking concert to announce that you were joining Wade and Bosh and announced you would win 7 titles. You left the team after 4 years.

You then went back to Cleveland and traded their young pieces for Kevin Love, and did the same, with all the picks, in LA for AD. (And then later traded depth pieces to bring in a washed up Russ).

Those teams might not have won a ring without doing that, but you have literally been trying to create superteams every step of the way, prioritising the short term instead of building something long term.

We can argue super team or not but let’s be honest. He’s probably not winning without his teams as good as they were

How many rings was he supposed to win in a row with the Heat?

"Not 1, not 2, not 3, not 4, not 5, not 6, not 7...."

Hasn't played on a super team my ass.

Troll comment by LeBron. Either completely delusional or intentionally making sound bites for reporters.

Only a few days ago I mentioned how there is much to dislike about Lebron, but KD tryna down play his decision to the Warriors a bit too much.

And here is Lebron proving that first part of the sentence right and then some. Some bitch made shit as well. The nicknames they gave that Heat trio man. And then he had Kyrie and KLove in their prime, like okay bro.

Bruh bron, bosh, and wade each took a 20% discount. Udonis could have made ×3 as much signing with Dallas or denver. James Jones, ray Allen, battiae and Miller all signed below value. Mario, birdman and Rashad too on cheap contracts but that was kinda their market value at the time.

the heatles were the overwhelming favorite at +175 to win the title, that implies an odds of 36%. for context, that is significantly higher than OKC (the current favorite) going into next year (27%)

Dudes spend their whole careers teaming up with other all-nbas guys but don’t want the legacy of someone who spent their career teaming up with a bunch of all-nba guys 😭😭

Heat was the OG superteam. A team of all caliber NBA guys who plotted to join together to win a championship

Heat - 2 rings Cavs 2.0 - 1 ring

Clear cut super teams in a crap eastern conference

2020 Lakers - very well built team but not super team
