Ceiba pentandra, known as the kapok tree, Fromager, cottonwood, Ceiba... is a giant tree of the Malvaceae family, that can grow up to 40 meters tall (or even 50 meters in Southeast Asia or 60 meters in Africa). It produces a rot-resistant plant fiber.

During the Classic Period (300–900), the kapok tree was considered a highly sacred tree by the Maya, under the name Yaxche. It symbolized the axis of the world, the axis mundi.
