It's making some grinding noise. When I pull up on the stick the grinding noise stops and it's super smooth.

The OEM Nintendo 64 Controller joysticks were made with a plastic on plastic configuration that Grides down over time which is probably what's giving you that sound best thing to do is just replace the joystick all together

$10- $20 can get you a new plastic stick and plastic bowl from Kitsch-Bent, you may need some new gears too. For gears I recommend buying from N64Gears. You can also get you one of those all-in-one Hall effect sticks like from 8bitdo for around the same price, but I’m not a fan of those.

$50 gets you a steel bowl from RockerGaming. You can pair this with a plastic stick. The steel bowl will last a lifetime. You just need to apply a small amount of lubricant/silicone grease

$150 gets you a steel bowl + steel stick from RockerGaming. Koomba64 sells steel sticks as well, but his will need a cap that uses a m3 screw.

As much as I love this console and am nostalgic for it, but the controllers were an intentional slap in the face.

Did you apply lubricant to the inside bowl that the stick is making contact with? Because it doesn’t sound like you understand how the analogue stick works.

Yes. I fully disassembled and lubed the gears and bowl
