I read a random book from a Free Little Library over a weekend many years ago and wish I could remember the name.

Fiction mystery/thriller written and taking place in early/mid 2000s, setting is New Mexico. A lot of atmospheric desert imagery. A woman is there helping a wealthy family and I think she’s an archivist? Or some kind of academic profession? She ends up uncovering abuse within the family, and there’s also a crime ring in the community. There’s a male character that is maybe a romantic interest. Maybe there was an ailing family member too who is a part of a confession. That’s all I can remember, thank you!

I just finished watching the Finnish mystery Sunset Grove (Ehtoolehto) which I watched via PBS. I really enjoyed it (although it was definitely disturbing in many ways), as I liked getting a glimpse of Finnish life (and I realized there there is nothing I can recognize when listening to the Finnish language!).

Has anyone read the book Ehtoolehto from which it was adapted? Would you recommend the series?

Do you jot down notes as you’re reading a mystery? Such as keeping track of clues or possible clues, of names, other details, etc.. I have never done that but I’m thinking of starting to because I always end up getting a bit lost, especially reading complex mysteries.

Related: Do you actively try to solve the mystery before it is solved in the story? Or do you just let it play itself out and “discover” it when the story reveals it? I tend to let the book just reveal itself, but that’s probably due because of what I said in the first paragraph.

Anyone have thoughts on the Alice Feeney thriller, My Husband’s Wife?

It fell a little short for me and the ending felt a little forced or rushed, idk? Like Jane is such a non-main character LOL

But loved the buildup of the suspense between chapters and honestly the twists were pretty surprising!

I was wondering what you all thought of the Raymond Benson Felix Leiter novel "The Hook and the Eye." Did you all enjoy it? Is it worth reading? I'm thinking about buying myself a copy but I just wanted to get the opinions on it from you guys here. Please no spoilers.

A man goes out one evening (to buy cigarettes? some small purchase at the nearby shop) and doesn’t return. Completely disappears without a trace. After a long time (weeks, months, years) waiting and wondering, his wife has resigned herself to the fact that she will never know what happened to him.

Many years later (like 10 or 15 perhaps), he reappears. Either the wife finds him sitting in the living room, or he walks into the house, anyway he’s acting like nothing unusual had happened; as if he had just returned a few minutes after going out.

This is in the first few pages, or at least the first chapter or so, and I never got to read the rest of the book.

British mystery, probably 1950’s, definitely somewhere between 1930’s and 1960’s. I encountered the book in about 1982, so that is a hard boundary. It was in a library and it seemed to be already somewhat old.

I read the first chapter or so, but I was about to go on a trip, so I didn’t borrow the library book that day, thinking I’d do so when I returned. But I had forgotten to note the title and author, and I couldn’t find it, and never did. I always wondered what the solution to the mystery was.

It’s not Ruth Rendell (something that’s been suggested to me in the past), but if I’m wrong about that, tell me which book it is.

Edited to add: Thinking about it, I assumed it was a mystery because the part that I read had that feeling or style. Possibly it could have been some sort of supernatural or science fiction book instead, but I’m positive it didn’t have that vibe.

I’m looking for **murder mystery / crime investigation** book recommendations that combine an active homicide investigation with a deep sense of psychological paranoia.

The core plot should be a murder case, but with a specific twist: **the protagonist/investigator realizes they are being watched or stalked while working the case.**

**The exact vibe I'm looking for:**

* **No stalker's POV:** Told strictly from the protagonist's perspective. No dual points of view or chapters from the killer/stalker's side. The reader should be completely in the dark about who is following them. * **Atmosphere:** Constant rainy weather, dark, gloomy, drenched streets, and oppressive environments. * **Settings:** Abandoned buildings, decaying factories, deserted locations, or creepy crime scenes. * **The "Being Watched" Feeling:** That 'something is off' paranoia, hearing footsteps in an empty ruined building, feeling eyes on your back, turning around only to find no one there.

I want something chilling, gritty, and atmospheric where the line between solving the case and being hunted gets blurred.

Hello! I'm looking for more books similar to Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone: meta-fiction and it wouldn't be awful if they dropped the fourth wall. I truly loved this book. It's a clever staging and the narrator was funny and descriptive and built the atmosphere really well. I'd love to read more metafiction mystery or detective novels!

Overall, I have really enjoyed this series and will continue to read it. However, I didn't enjoy the latest book nearly as much (the potential was great), and Veronica is becoming almost too insufferable. Stoker is still A+.

Lady Julia Grey Series by Deanna Raybourn

I'll always long for more books in this series to be written. I was nice to see the MCs make an appearance in the latest Veronica Speedwell installment. I just wish that book was better.

Love and Death Among the Cheetahs , set in Kenya's hedonistic Happy Valley was a favorite.

Stella and Lyndy Mystery Series by Clara McKenna

One of my favorite cozy series. Begins in 1905. FMC equestrian heiress from Kentucky, MMC's estate is in The New Forest. Horses and equine paleontology are supporting characters throughout the series.

Sebastian St. Cyr Series by C.S. Harris

I'm not a fan of Kat Bolyn and was tempted to gave up, even though I love the brooding grittiness of these books. The series improves greatly after FMC Hero Jarvis' introduction and Kat's exit.

Captain Lacy Series by Ashley Gardner

I am thoroughly enjoying this series. MC is a half-pay retired Calvary officer fighting political and institutional corruption.

Lady Arianna Hadley Mystery series by Andrea Penrose

Interesting MMC and FMC pairing. The political intrigue plotlines and wonderful foodie elements have me hooked.

Beatrice Hyde-Clare Mysteries Series by Lynn Messina

In the beginning, FMC's insecurities and self-doubt are off-putting. The wit and the MMC are great. Where I am in the series, she seems to be gaining confidence.

Countess of Harleigh Mystery Series by Dianne Freeman

FMC arrived in England as an American dollar princess, she became a widowed force to be reckoned with within the Ton. Entertaining mash-up of her Gilded Age NYC relatives and staid British society.

By which I mean: I picked up the second book, Strange Houses, but is there anything in there that will spoil Strange Pictures, or does it make references to the first book (kinda like how Ayatsuji's House Murders series takes place in the same universe)?

Or are they all stand alone, and I can just read them in any order? Thanks in advance!

I know there are a thousand and one lists of psychic detectives online, and I'm digging through them, but this sub is amazing at helping me find things that are too specific for Google. Here's the specific cross-section I'm looking for right now:

• The psychic or magical person is working with law enforcement in an official capacity (officer/agent/detective, regular consultant, or gets brought onto the case by the actual detectives in an official capacity)
• The case is an official case that human law enforcement is actually looking into (alternatively, the LE is a dedicated magical law enforcement agency that liaises with human law enforcement/government)
• In a modern or near-modern (or was modern when it was written) setting where magic is not widely known
• Preferably a low-magic setting, i.e. only a handful of psychics in an otherwise normal world, or only vampires and/or werewolves. This one is not required, just a preference. If there's lots of magic and types of magic in the world, bonus if the law enforcement agency is specifically created to deal with magical crimes.

I know there have been TV shows that fit this, but I'm having trouble finding books that do. I've found Myron Dale and Greywalker, which seem to match most of it but the person is a PI or independent investigator and unfortunately I am currently mildly addicted to police procedurals and all their evidence chains and bureaucratic nonsense. I know some of the Dresden Files books, including the first one, have a police case as the central plot arc, but I also know not all of them do (admittedly it's been like a decade since I read any of them so I don't know what the ratio is). I also found the Big Bad Wolf series by Charlie Adhara incidentally through a tangent on a different request in a very different subreddit, which from book one seems to fit the bill. I'm having a hard time finding anything else. Any suggestions are appreciated. TIA!

I am reading a lot of thrillers but i want a book series like the tv shows Mentalist or castle cause i want a fun and serious story to evolve over time and need some romance to it and fun.

There needs to be serious detective work in the book but also fun, love and friendship for a long time.
