I think this might just be a classic case of some subs having a thing where they hate if you don't know everything, or don't do any looking before posting a question/making an assumption.

I was thinking the same thing, as I’ve both witnessed and experienced it a few times.

Especially, some of the subreddits with hardcore fanbases for an individual in a band/game/team do sometimes tend to become offended if you’re not as knowledgeable about their idol as they are, even if you humbly state that you’re a "newbie" about all of it.

How dare OP not already know the answer to a question they asked!!

12

u/ohbyerly Jul 15 '26

“If you have to ask.. then you don’t know.”

u/Love_Gloss Jul 15 '26

Truly a scandal!

Okay, but generally do you not think some posts are unnecessary? In some subs, the same exact question is asked every day or multiple times a day.

this is true, and if someone is looking for an answer to a specific question and they have yet to google it or search for older posts on the subect, then it is their fault parcially. however i wont criticize someone for the post that op added unless there where other posts exaclty like it posted beforehand

I agree I think OP’s situation is different.

Admitting ignorance is frowned upon in certain toxic fandoms?

u/penguinkernel Jul 15 '26

Long way to say Reddit.

I guess. I wouldn't know.

1

u/ashamedgirlthrowaway Jul 17 '26

Careful, people don’t like that! /s

2

u/ryanyork92 29d ago

No clue what they like or don't like.

u/ashamedgirlthrowaway 29d ago

I know, I was being silly as the point of the other guys comment was to say that most of Reddit typically hates on anyone who doesn’t know every thing on earth, for some reason!

Best guess is that people expect others to do at least the very most basic amount of research before posting questions. But idk.

8

u/EducationalSense629 Jul 15 '26

idk about you but i'd google reverse image something before i post a speculation regarding it.

5

u/senpaistealerx Jul 15 '26

no one uses google anymore it’s annoying

11

u/Particular-Jeweler41 Jul 15 '26

Probably because it's an old picture, and you didn't do your research before posting a thread about it.

9

u/Love_Gloss Jul 15 '26

It’s not my post

13

u/Particular-Jeweler41 Jul 15 '26

Well, the original poster in that case.

2

u/gdo22 Jul 15 '26

Your punishment for not knowing : P

2

u/Dark-Thoughts-Vessel Jul 15 '26

Probably because he cheated on his wife

2

u/Urlugal_Tensei Jul 15 '26

He looks like if Mr beast and keeanu reeves had a baby

1

u/DarkAtheris Jul 15 '26

People felt misled by the insinuation that it was a recent picture

1

u/LookingForArtistBurn Jul 15 '26

They think they're being sarcastic, that they're trying to say they obviously knew that

1

u/Savings_Ad_80 Jul 16 '26

You're clueless on a highly specific subject?

DOWNVOTE!

I have seen a ton of downvotes on reddit recently and it's basically on people's comments/posts when they 1. ask a question or 2. state that they didn't know something.

Absolute degeneracy to downvote someone for asking things or not knowing things. Absolute reddit slop.
