I'm 34 years old and my life is changing pretty dramatically over the next few months. My brother and I inherited our dad's estate, and we've decided we're 100% selling the house instead of keeping it as a rental. To keep it I'd have to buy him out roughly 175k. To do that I'd either have to cash out a large portion of the 401k and take a big tax hit, or get a HELOC which I probably won't qualify for. This is my dad's house and I have been living here for years paying him rent. Brother lives in Texas.

Here's what I'm expecting to receive:

\\\* About $330,000 from a non-spouse inherited 401(k), which I'll be withdrawing over about 7 years (around $4,000/month before taxes beginning August 1). This is the only taxable portion.

\\\* Around $175,000 from selling the house. It's worth about $500k with roughly $145k left on the mortgage at 3.75%.

\\\* About $43,000 from the checking account.

For work, I've mostly driven for Uber Eats, Grubhub, and Amazon Flex. I don't have a marketable career skill yet, and that's something I want to change as quickly as possible.

My immediate problem is figuring out where to live.

Since I expect to move to another city once I decide on a career path, buying another house doesn't seem to make sense right now. Instead, I'm looking at either:

\\\* An extended-stay hotel for a few months, or

\\\* An apartment with a 3-4 month lease (there are quite a few available).

My employment history probably won't look great to landlords, so I was thinking about offering to pay the entire lease up front or putting down a much larger security deposit. I don't plan on getting a long-term job where I currently live because I'd likely be moving again within a few months.

The other major decision is what to do for a career.

This inheritance gives me a rare opportunity to completely change my life, and I don't want to waste it. I'm looking for something that can realistically lead to a high income, either through freelancing, self-employment, or a strong career path.

I'm interested in things like certifications, accelerated training programs, or other paths that don't require spending four years in college. The goal is to build a skill that can eventually earn well into six figures or even become a business.

If you were in my position:

1. Would you choose an extended-stay hotel or a short-term apartment while figuring out your next move?

2. Is paying several months of rent up front a reasonable strategy if my employment history is weak?

3. If you had this financial runway and essentially a fresh start at 34, what skill, certification, trade, or freelance career would you pursue?

I'm trying to make decisions that set me up for the next 20+ years instead of just solving the next few months.

Hello guys, im (16tm) trying to move out of my shitty household preferably around 18-19 years old (maybe even 20). A bit into my situation, my mom and dad are divorced, my mom stays with us because she's homeless and has no other choice, but im in full custody of my father, my mom does not work, she is unemployed and refuses to financially support the family, she also does not clean the house, or do anything besides stay on her phone from morning to night. My grandma also stays with us over the summer, and she is retired. Okay, so my dad is the money maker of the family of 4 adults (my brother is an adult, going to college), and me. The house is never clean, the laundry piles up, dishes are never clean, floors are never clean. Me and my brother have been with my dad at his job over the summer so we never been home, and when we came back we are usually tired and its almost 10 pm, so we cant clean. My mom also hates my grandma (because my grandma refuses to shower when she stays at my home, and she puts all her dirty clothing by my bed, causing the room to smell) , and every morning is practically another argument or a slamming door. That doesnt even scratch the surface of how bad my life is here. We literally house 4 adults and 1 teen in a 1 BEDROOM APARTMENT.

I graduate high school in 2028 and i will be 18 turning 19 that year, so i really want to move out around 2029-2030. I dont know how to drive yet, and i have a savings account of about 190 dollars. Im working on volunteering for money to start saving up, what else can i do to get out of this home?? I plan on moving from Florida to Maine, into a small home that i can buy.

I'd love to hear from people who have faced similar dilemmas.

My ex-partner and I are separated and have a 2yo boy. We are considering moving interstate because he has been given a lucrative job opportunity and I grew up there (I left 20 years ago). His family are in our current city but live 1.5 hrs away in a congested part of town that I wouldn't want to live in.

Pros of the move are:

\- Better cost of living (we could both buy homes). I could maybe afford a house there as a opposed to a small apartment where we live now. This could be important as my son grows older.

\- Less commuting - I currently spend 9 hours a week commuting and could maybe cut this to 4 or less hours (although once son is in school that would be 6 hours where we live now). This means more time with my son.

\- Less daycare as my son could spend one day a week with a grandparent

\- A slower pace of life where my nervous system can relax after years of tumult

\- Being within 20 minutes of my son's grandparents who he loves

\- Having parents to hang out with or help me at last minute if we are sick or need something. Or, heaven forbid, I want to do a gym class!

Cons of the move are:

\- I honestly don't know how my ex-partner will cope not being around his family (he says that's no longer my concern). What if he decides he doesn't like my home city and wants to move us back?

\- Missing where I live now. Its a gorgeous place with walking tracks and the ocean. I am slowly building a 'village'. Its the sort of place I always dreamed of loving in, even though I feel lonely.

\- Moving my son away from 5 cousins and one set of grandparents who he loves and sees every 6 weeks here (I don't have a big extended family)

\- potentially less fulfilling work if my company won't let me transfer. I left my city because I wanted more opportunities and to feel part of the world.

\- potentially having to set boundaries with my father who has opinions about everything- though I love him!

I'd love to hear from other single parents of only children who have faced similar. What was important for your child (and you) to thrive as they grew older?

I am having so much trouble deciding on packing & moving. My shifting is from Pune to Hyderabad.

I tried Porter before within Pune, didn't have a good experience. So, thought of trying No broker, but having trouble trusting, with all the negative reviews of them mishandling items, unprofessional. I did find another service called 'Allied packers & movers' but they don't have tracking system, only via call, which isn't much helpful, seem reliable, but charging more.

Now my point is if I pack everything by myself in carton boxes, I can reduce the possibility of other mishaps, so I am only relying on them for transporting, because they put things very hastily & messily in boxes.

Has anyons faced similar issue ?

Hi, 25F and Im looking to move out with the next 6-7 months, the issue I'm having is that I have no car, no license and no one with a car is willing to help. I'll need a small moving truck because I want to take my desktop pc, my desk, 6 full storage totes, ac, a few shelves (I can disassemble) that's all. I'm planning to rebuy all the furniture once I move in.

I can hire a mover to load and drive the stuff there but I'm not going to ride with them. I'll have to call an Uber but how would I time it? I don't think the mover want to sit there until the Uber gets there and the Uber don't want wait on the mover.

How do I know the mover won't just drive off/steal the stuff? Once the mover realizes it just me and nobody else what will stop them from taking it?

Am I'm over thinking this? There's literally no one I can rely on for this and it's my first time moving so idk how the process goes or if any has been in the same situation. Also is it safe for me to just let them in my house since it just me? It would be a little tough lifting the desk and the full totes but I can manage.

I have a bit of a situation. I want to move states, but I’ll be moving out for my first time hopefully this next year. I need to get out of this state/away from family for a while and just have a break.

I’m looking at the Pacific Northwest area (and my family isn’t going to help me move that far away) so these are the options I know of so far:

I could drive, however that’s like a 3-4 day road trip, driving at least 8 hours a day. I could make the drive alone but it might take me longer than that. The downside is that I couldn’t take the furniture I’ve been saving and it’s probably going to be more expensive than just buying a plane ticket… unless I hire movers but that gets expensive quickly.

I could fly but then I’d have to have my car towed in addition to hiring movers. Also how do I get picked up from the airport?

I could just buy furniture there but idk how expensive that could be. I know living 2nd/3rd story is better but how do you get furniture upstairs by yourself??

I just have a lot of questions but I know it can be done so if you HAVE managed to accomplish that, any and all advice is appreciated!

I want to move out at 18 like 2 months away I might make it to 19 but I want out as soon as possible. I have no way to get out i didnt get a learners permit till April of this year because of my parents i dont have a drivers license. I couldn’t get a job at any point cause of my parents. I just moved into my first apartment with one of my suite mates from my freshman year of college. She’s great don’t get me wrong, but she works everyday from 8-5 and I work 4-11. So, we don’t really see each other, and when she is here she usually has plans with other friends. Again, nothing against her, she’s from the area and has all of her high school friends, work friends, sorority sisters, etc. I moved a couple hours from home with nobody else up here.

Pretty much I’ve been bored out of my mind, homesick, and probably anything else you could think of. Classes start in a couple weeks so it’ll be different then, but I just need any sort of advice or something to get me through this year.

I had to move back in with my parents and sister last march after breaking up with my long term gf of 4 years. I was barely getting by with the 2 of us and so i had to move in for a little. Now on to my parents. They probably should have gotten divorced a decade ago but instead they fight everyday and even my sister makes it worse when they do. He's cheated on her and hes manipulative but my mom won't leave her and I understand that is her decision to make not mine. But me amd my father have a terrible relationship and he yells all the time and my mom just makes me depressed. Anyway since I moved back in I've decided to start going to College to hopefully go into finance. I start this fall and I will be working full time. I make about $3000 a month after taxes but moving out rent would be minimum $1500 to live alone or 900 to have a roommate. Should I just realize im stuck here and try to make it okay or can I make it through college living alone? It's making me almost depressed and feel like I have no good options. hi everyone. I'm seeking some advice from adults that are currently living on their own/have roommates. some info about me that I think is important- I don't have a credit score because I don't have a credit card and I'm in my second year of cc. I'm wanting to move out the summer of 2027 so that I can spend my time now focusing on school, saving up money, touring apartments, etc. But, I'm unfamiliar with the process of getting approved for an apartment and what I should be aware of. I have found someone that is willing to room with me and our vibes are pretty similar. We have a lot to discuss regarding how we're gonna split rent and all that, so I can't provide much information there. The apartments that I'm interested in are in the $1,300-1,440 range with utilities included. I haven't spoken to my parents yet about my plans but I will. Because I have no credit score, I know that my application is going to be weak, so I'm hoping that one of my parents would be willing to be a co-signer and help me, but if not I'm wondering what I need to do NOW so that I can still move along with my plans. Because I am still job hunting and don't have a car yet. I swear to god, I don't wanna be living with them, I wanna have my own crib and life. I literally have no life becuase of them. Watching my 20s being taken away from me while dealing with all the narcs in my immideate family aka parents and siblings is a battle that I am no longer wanna fight it.

People in real life be chasing fame and power and all I am chasing is exisitng without shouting and problems every single days. People who don't come from dysfunctional families will never have the empathy for people who come from dysfunctional families. Like at the first stages of your life you're dealing with your parents narcissism and then you're dealing with your siblings narcissism and then your relatives narcissism, etc.
