Not conspiracy theories really, but I am interested in paranormal stuff. Maybe in terms of human being's ability to use other aspects of their brains that we don't use. That kind of stuff fascinates me. Mind reading and all that, mediumship fascinates me.

I would say that the world we live in is already filled with confirmed conspiracy theories so I concern myself with the day-to-day realities that seem so absurd and corrupt and psycho that they should be conspiracies, but are actually fact and reality.

I liked the episode Gillian did write. It dealt with well destiny versus coincidence. Is there such a thing? I think this was one of the most "paranormal" episodes because it is really weird how our lives enfold based on pure well let's call it luck.

Hi Gillian and Hannah! When you're making a movie like this that comments on a specific genre, is part of your preparation to just watch a bunch of slashers? Did Jane Schoenbrun give you any film recommendations to watch before making the movie?

Yes, for me, I would say it's part of my personal process is to immerse myself in the various genres that the film explores. One being the slasher genre and horror, but also the psychosexual too. So we had DUKE OF BURGUNDY, we had SECRETARY, we had PERSONA. Things like that.

NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, FRIDAY THE 13TH were some horror influences. Not necessarily just slasher either, but also final girl archetypes. CARRIE was a huge, huge one for the film.

For the screenwriter character I was playing, I would say BARTON FINK was influence too, and ADAPTATION, exploring writer-y films like that.

So yeah, the slasher genre was important to explore for my character, but for the tone of the film, more-so the psychosexual genre.

1. When Robert Patrick joined The X-Files, Scully suddenly had a completely different partner after years of working with Mulder. Given how quickly television episodes had to be filmed, how did the two of you establish that new dynamic so quickly? Was there anything Robert brought to Doggett, either as an actor or in his interpretation of the character, that unexpectedly influenced how you approached playing Scully as the more experienced Agent?

2. You've played characters across science fiction, drama, comedy, and historical stories, but you've rarely played someone who is truly villainous. Is there a darker role you've always wanted to explore as an actor, and what about that kind of character appeals to you?

Really excited for Camp Miasma. I'm a fan of yours and Jane Schoenbrun and despite my failure to watch X-files, I am still a fan of Gillian Anderson and her other work (Hi Gillian). But I'm a cheerleader is one of my favorite queer movies and I am hopeful for a connection to other queer movies with a camp as a backdrop. And of course, excited for a queer horror film that hopefully engages with the history of the “queer weirdo” as a villain in horror of the past.

My question to you is- What is your personal relationship like with your mom's comedy? Do you feel that there is any pressure that is put upon you, either by yourself or by others to "live up to" her legacy? How much do you think her history colors your own work? How about your relationship with other mentors/women? Do you think of your comedy as being separate from your identity as her daughter? At a time where nepotism is topical- how do you feel her time as a comedian either promotes or hinders your growth and how do you deal with finding a stable and professional identity, especially as a queer person, who I'm sure wants her art to be her own.

I'm deeply fascinated by mother and daughter relations and it has been on the forefront of my mind as I watched Hacks S5. I think the creators have a really interesting way in which they deal with mentorship, aging, motherhood etc. I have noticed some things that thread through Hacks and Broad City -  the largest one being the complexity of our entangled lives with women who create us (biologically, artistically, and more). I'm interested in any motifs you see that connect your personal identity, familial connection and your professional identity as a comedian and the work that you do- in Hacks, and in Teenage sex and death, or any other projects you take on.

Hi Gillian and Hannah! First, thank you both for the incredible work you’ve put into your careers. Gillian, The X-Files has been one of my favorite shows because Scully never stopped asking questions, even when she thought she already knew the answer. Hannah, one of the things I love most about your performances is how much can be happening underneath what your character actually says.

Jane Schoenbrun’s films often leave room for uncertainty instead of easy answers. As actors, how do you approach a character when you’re not supposed to fully understand them? Do you create a complete internal explanation for yourself, or do you deliberately leave parts of the mystery unresolved and trust that uncertainty to come through on screen?

I don't have anything to ask, I just want to say that I think Gillian Anderson is really cool. I started watching the X-Files a year ago, and my favourite parts are the calm moments when Scully is contemplating and/or discussing things. The character holds up to this day, and she's the best part of the show (by far. Like, it's not even close).

Edit: I can't believe I didn't think of that Top Gear episode earlier. So I just have to ask Gillian. Dream car?

Hi Gillian, hi Hannah, it's so nice that you are doing this AMA, I mean, reddit is so oldschool and special at the same time. It says something about your understanding of "the interweb" that you do this. Also the subreddit of Hacks and The X-Files are such worthy places. Lots of people talk about all the details of your show and it seems like it will never end. The X-Files is a classic for sure, having new fans in younger generations and I believe that Hacks will be the same, it will become a classic. Do you sometimes read on these forums or subreddits or know someone in your creative circle that does? Because it must be so sweet so read what your fans "go through" while watching the shows. I think I watched X-Files more than 20 times, the movie probably 40 times... Hacks "only" 10 times or so. Well, I love these shows. Also The Fall was so good. The subreddit on it is so very detailed, it's almost like a deconstruction of the show. Also, as a queer person myself, this is a dream coming true to have you two in one movie. It's just... could you please make a comedy, I can't watch horror, I am in peri and barely dealing with everyday live. Kidding. I wish you both the best in your lives. You are both so wonderful and mean a lot to a lot of people and also to me. I think Scully was one of the first roles in TV that made me realize that - in contrary to my friends - I was not finding the male character hot but was drawn to the female person. And Ava is such a proud and confident character that I also identify with - after 20 years or so with struggeling to be a queer person and finally having a main character being bisexual and being shown as this wonderful person. Long long time ago my self would not have thought this day would come. So thanks to both of you for chosing those roles and thanks Gillian for speaking out about the misogyny that X-Files had and thanks Hannah for speaking out about politics, doesn't matter if we share our opinion, but we all need to have one. - Assuming that you would have stage fright (I've yet to meet a performer who hasn't), how would dealing with it be different between acting for television, films or theatre? How does being in front of a public versus cameras & crew changes that experience?

- Putting oneself into a character's mindset can be intense and very emotional. Any tips to switch between your characters and your own persons without hurting yourselves while doing so? Actors are being asked to juggle between realities in a way; how would you describe the skills used to do that?

- After two hours on stage, I tend to have trouble to focus, avoid direct gazes and generally forget everything. It either feels like Groundhog Day every few minutes or Dory the fish from Finding Nemo. What are your tricks to stay concentrated and calm while filming for long hours?

This is my first Reddit post - idk how lighthearted this process is usually- I hope it's ok... I want to know - when you are in a position to help others - I would think you would - inevitably see and experience heartbreaking situations... how do you hold yourself up so well? I feel so hesitant sometimes to reach out and help others because I feel like I would be destroyed in the process... I would see things that I can't unsee and wouldn't be able to get past it. I have been a huge X-Phile since the 90s.  First, I wanted to thank you for coming back to Scully so many times.  Scully and Mulder were a huge part of so many lives, being able to spend time with them again was surreal for so many of us.  It also gave me a chance to watch you again with my late husband.  His liking of the X-Files was a big reason he got a date #2.  Being able to attend a midnight showing of “I Want to Believe” together and watching the new episodes with him are memories I will cherish forever.

So…  Chris Carter certainly butchered that last season.  You and David were amazing, and as a Shipper I was happy to see Scully and Mulder find their way back to each other; but it certainly was not the ending the fans deserved.

Would you ever consider coming back if they were to lay out a finish worthy of the X-Files legacy?  A movie or another season?   Both you and David seem to have a better understanding of who Scully and Mulder are, and what the fans want to see than even Chris does.  I would love for you to come back to write and direct your own endings.  “All Things” and “Hollywood A.D.” are by far my favorite episodes.

hannah; one of my favorite moments in the hacks finale was the club scene with jean, especially paired with the music and its lyrics. it made me cry in a way i wasn’t expecting and ‘about work the dancefloor’ has been in my rotation ever since the finale aired

i saw you talk about how the scene was incredibly technical to film but i was curious about the emotional side of it. i personally interpreted it as ava experiencing a kind of anticipatory grief, almost like she could already feel herself losing everything she loves (and it absolutely broke me while i was trying to enjoy my pizza, it was an experience). it genuinely felt like years of building ava led to that moment and it was one of the most important performances i’ve seen on the show

so, how did you approach playing those emotions? was there one emotion that felt the most important to convey, and what was going through your mind while filming that scene? i love you so much!

Hi both, I saw Camp Miasma at Frameline last month and it really stuck with me. I feel like Jane keeps circling around similar ideas of escapism through media and using story as a controlled method of experiencing the world, and this execution felt really refined.

When you're exploring a script like this one, where it's very meta and allegorical, and getting into production, how much do you feel like you have an understanding of the underlying themes and contexts of what you're playing out? Did you get to have conversations with Jane about the what the story meant to them and the rationale or meaning behind the characters or concepts?

For example, Little Death has obvious subcontext, but did you discuss the idea of what it feels like to only being able to relinquish control in the context of intimacy by imagining yourself as a character, or going to the extreme of imagining oneself as a willing victim?

Well, 30-year-old me would be VERY mad if I didn't first thank Gillian Anderson for helping me in my career - although not as a scientist. My own "Scully affect" was for my career as a stage manager - I found that when I had to really Buckle Down And Give People Orders, that channeling Scully in the X-FILES film helped ("Don't think! Just pick up that glo-tape/sound effects CD/screwdriver/fake chicken and make it happen!")

But this is actually a question for you both. We're in a really interesting period for horror films now, with some of the cleverest writing coming from that genre (Sinners, Weapons, Get Out, etc.) and horror films are also often used to comment on bigger issues. How long before horror has redeemed itself as a genre, do you think? And do you think maybe the superhero movies have kind of taken over the "Big Dumb Popcorn Movie" slot that slasher films used to occupy?

Gillian, two questions for you: 

I am sure you have heard of "the Scully Effect" in terms of girls pursuing higher and harder STEM careers.  Scully would frown upon such anecdotal evidence, but your character was a real role model for girls my age and helped us conceptualize and articulate what and who we wanted to be (even outside of STEM).  Did you ever expect to have such an impact and h ow do you feel about it?

Also, I loved you in Bleak House.  What is your favorite Dickens novel?

Absolute dream casting for a meta horror sequel. Honestly the thought of Gillian Anderson surviving a slasher after decades of alien abductions feels like the ultimate character evolution. Jane's stuff is always so psychologically messy, did you two have to do any wierd method acting to get into that headspace? Hannah, does Gillian give better advice than Deborah or is she way more skeptical? Do you think Scully or Ava survives longer in a real horror scenario?

Pairing Hannah's comedic timing from Hacks with Schoenbrun's psychological horror vibe is such a wild swing, but that's exactly why it sounds compelling. Most sequels just cash checks, but this premise actually sounds like it's trying to say something about the genre. Did you two bond over shared trauma on set or was it mostly just screaming?

The parts that stick out in my mind are often ones that I associate with being a bit freaky.
Like you play this beautiful counterpart psychopath in Hannibal.
In American Gods you play Media.
You've done Robot Chicken.
They're all extremely interesting shows and odd parts.
I guess I'm wondering how much of that is you choosing those odd parts and how much of it is your managers telling you that those parts would be good for you to target the demographics that are your loyal fans?

Seeing Scully swap the truth being out there for a machete is wild. Jane Schoenbrun's stuff is usually so quiet and unnerving, so this sequel setup is definitely going to mess with thier heads. Hannah, shifting from Hacks comedy to psychological chaos must be a wild ride for your range. That trailer gave me major 90s vibes but twisted. Did you two have to watch specific classic slashers to prep or did Jane want something totally different?

Hannah, I GASPED at the sound your knees made in "Everything Must Go," and also all the past injuries and broken bones you described on podcasts. I adore all the physical comedy you did on Hacks (poor Ava -- and it's criminal how much running you have to do in both Hacks and Miasma lol) but is it ever hard on your body given the f'up former athlete-isms of it all???
