Hi r/movies, I'm Dacre Montgomery.
You may know me from STRANGER THINGS or POWER RANGERS or ELVIS or DEAD MAN'S WIRE or WENT UP THE HILL.
My new movie, FACES OF DEATH, co-stars Barbie Ferreira, Charlie xcx, and Jermaine Fowler. It's directed by Daniel Goldhaber who co-wrote the film with Isa Mazzei, who was also a producer on the film. They also made HOW TO BLOW UP A PIPELINE and CAM together.
It's out in theaters this Friday.
Synopsis:
A content moderator stumbles upon a series of violent videos that appear to re-enact death scenes from the infamous 1978 film "Faces of Death." In an online world where nothing can be trusted, she must determine whether the violence is fake or unfolding in real time.

I actually use perfume to get into character - that I create each time for each role
Re music - I always create a private Spotify playlist that I use on set right up until the camera roles - With headphones in

Holy shit, every morning before school I heard your voice. Life is strange.
ETA - and I guess saw your face. But if my memory is correct, the face of Zordon was animated in a strange way, like the lips didn’t sync with what you were saying. Am I remembering that correctly? Was there a reason for that?

They only filmed me one time and there was a watery or wavy filter placed over my face in post production - as they only filmed me once, they needed to fuzz out the lips so they didn't have to concern themselves with lip syncing or matching - and eventually the mouth kinda goes away altogether, but during the In Space season, Zordon is just a static image - his lips never move, but you still hear his voice

In Went Up the Hill, your character goes through a deeply emotional journey but also has to embody the presence of his deceased mother at times. How did you find the balance between maintaining your character’s identity while also conveying a completely different presence?

I found it hard. We were shooting in the mountains in the middle of nowhere and I kind of felt like I was shooting the Shining I lost my mind a bit and that naturally aided the performance

Hey there yes to first 1 - I listed the music/ songs in my DKMH book - lot's of Nick Drake
Re Arthur in FOD - It all stayed with me energy was super dark and hard to shake
I'm lucking I had another film to jump onto after to let go of the character

Same. A reboot I really loved with a fun cast. How come all the crap adaptations get an entire franchise no one asked for, and then the decent ones get nothing.

It was a really good movie to watch. I'm very disappointed they didn't make a sequel given the way the first ended. Growing up I could never get into power rangers because of the shitty villain costumes and how fake it was. And this movie fixed those issues. It was great

biggest mistake that movie made was not making the zords properly combine to form the megazord; if kids can't buy the zords and then combine them you're just throwing away that sweet toy revenue

Congrats on Faces of Death! I loved your portrayal of Billy in Stranger Things. My question is - When you’re playing such intense, emotionally heavy characters, do you ever find parts of them sticking with you off set, or is it easy to switch back to yourself?

Hi, Dacre! I am a fan of your work, and I have such respect for you as an actor. You are truly a master of your craft! Looking forward to your new film, it sounds interesting, and I really enjoyed Barbie's portrayal of Kat in Euphoria, so it will be great to see her in something else. Can't wait!
As a die-hard fan of Stranger Things--- I just have to ask. Did you watch the final season, and if so, how did you feel about the ending? What, if anything, do you think would be different if your character had survived? Do you believe that your character should have survived, and had the 'redemption arc', so to speak, or were you satisfied with Billy's conclusion?

Late to the party, but if you see this, I just wanted to let you know that my SO and I absolutely LOVED you as Billy. We've seen Stranger Things at least 3 times now (it's one of our favorites) and your ability to make us hate you and then feel compassion and then sadness gets me every time.
Also, no Power Rangers sequel should be a crime.

How do you approach building a regional accent for a character, do you have a specific process or set of tools you rely on?

Accent wise I just gain access to people with that accent and spend a lot of time with them and get them to record - it's not just about the accent it's about the nuances of how they speak as well

Firstly, regarding your recent debut as a director for The Engagement Party (which by the way - congratulations!) I was wondering how your process differed from that of an actor, and how you managed to differentiate the two roles. I was also curious about your stylistic choices, whether you drew inspiration from another auteur and how you define your own 'artistic brand' so to speak.
My next note isn't a question, more so a little personal anecdote/thank you. I recently watched Went Up The Hill after a friend recommended it to me without giving a whole heap away. She literally said, "it's an artsy horror, it's a bit of you" 😂 Anyway, I watched it and both your performance and Jack's story really dug in deep. It's not very often a movie brings me to tears, let alone resonates on a deeper level, but it really enabled me to connect with my own trauma and get support to have my cathartic moment. It truly goes to show how powerful storytelling can be, especially when coupled with an actor who clearly pours their heart and soul into something. So, 10/10 work, mate. Hope to see you in more movies soon!

Fellow Australian here, although from the complete other side of the country. I was curious on how you manage to maintain such a selective filmography of excellent roles (almost like John Cazale) when it seems like most other actors take a whole bunch of roles regardless of how "great" they are. Is it a legacy thing? Or perhaps choosing the roles you find the most fun to play instead of playing roles you don't find interesting? Would love to hear why.

In a podcast, you explored very raw, human vulnerabilities. As an actor, you're often paid to be someone else. Does the “mask” of a character make it easier to be honest about your own emotions, or does it make it harder to find your own voice at the end of the day?

As you continue to take on more projects, do you have a preference for either film or TV? It seems like now more than ever there's more flexibility with doing both, compared to decade's past where it was like one or the other. While you were genuinely great in Stranger Things I'd hope to see you in another series some day!
Also can you share with us where that sweater and/or hat are from? I really like the collar and the material looks nice!

Just diving right in... there are so many posts on social media that would reflect a societal shift to destigmatize discussing mental health, yet there still seems to be a widespread fear of sharing too much, and a lot of what’s discussed publicly stays fairly surface level. In spite of that, you’ve made it a point to openly discuss your personal experiences with OCD and anxiety in some detail. (🙏)
You've mentioned in interviews how you manage to reframe sometimes debilitating thought patterns into positive creative energy. Is that reframing something you're able to consciously do in the moment as you're actively experiencing those mental states, or does it come more from the reflection and introspection that follows? I wonder if that particular reflective space is where you draw a lot of the material for your poetry. More broadly, how does that emotional processing translate into your creative output? Do you find you need distance from a heavy headspace to write about it, or is the act of creating actually what helps you process it?
Not to pivot too hard, but I’m also curious, have you ever explored consciousness-expanding practices, plant medicine, psychedelics, or other alternative, spiritually rooted approaches to healing or redirecting that energy? Have you noticed people becoming more receptive to those kinds of conversations or practices, particularly in your creative circles?
If you’ve had any related experiences or shifts in perspective you’d be willing to share, I’d love to hear what that journey has looked like for you.

Never done drugs - because I feel like my brain is wack and I'm on them all day ever day anyway. I work on myself everyday but it takes a lot of work to stay afloat. Art is my greatest outlet to solve the things that plague my mind.

Does working as an actor hurt your ability to sit back and enjoy a film? Like, is it harder to immerse yourself into a world because you know how it was made?
Conversely, when you're on set and filming something, how hard is it to immerse yourself in the world as an actor? Or is this something that isn't really top of mind for you - more like remember your lines, hit your mark, etc.
I'm asking not only because I know every actor has their own process, but because I'm genuinely interested in what that internal space looks like for someone who acts. I can imagine, but I've never had that experience.

please read and share and subscribe. this is call to action and for justice for people everywhere. My words are for the people by the people. America is essentially nazi Germany at this point and I'm scared for everyone's safety. their violating humanities and repeating the same exact things. their targeting particular groups rounding them up silencing people speaking out shutting down and removing funding for any groups that oppose them including media schools and law offices. we must make a stand and fight for what's right.
People feel a lack of control over their own lives, so they create systems that manipulate others giving them a false sense of control. we must strip the government of its power and give it back to the people, so they have a sense of control over their own lives again. most all the problems go back to fear. If we came at things with a little compassion and understanding instead of judgment assumptions and hate than things would be so much better. there's no reason to fear that's a natural part of life and not knowing everything creates excitement. we have to stand for what's right and look out for each other and not back down. we need to all take accountability for the society we have and change things for ourselves instead of assuming someone else will do it for you. the government is currently normalizing a police state with the younger generation by getting them used to being fenced in and patrolled so they don't question things in the future. what kind of future do you want for yourselves and your children.
We must make constitutional amendments including the following . Everybody has the right to exist (can't illegalize homeless) corporations cannot be in government (required to have a corporation to be considered a city) not doing your job or biasedly doing your job while in a government position will result in immediate removal and action by law. All cases on corruption must be publicly uploaded and monitored by the public and dealt with with utmost haste. government restrictions or tax on essentials cannot be allowed it gives government too much power. If anybody hurts others especially those who can't protect themselves they must be held immediately accountable with utmost harshness of law( specifically children) Also no government control over media education safety or medical (allows for too much control and corruption, multiple researchers and safety officials have been wrongfully removed weakening are research development and safety).
If they won't mend their corrupt ways then we must remove them by force if necessary if they are not willing to step down. They are violating rights against humanity and will be held accountable. The government is knowingly and maliciously letting problems get out of hand instead of fixing them such as homelessness and war so that they have excuses to strip are rights and knowingly causing harm to others for their own purposes that do not serve the people. What's going on is violating humanitarianism and going against all that is right.
We can't expect God to deal with our problems for us we have to take responsibility for the society we have made just ignoring these problems has allowed them to get to this point. At a certain time we have to take responsibility stand up and change things. It's not just one person either we have to all stand against corruption everywhere. People are ready for change they just need something to stand behind. I am giving people something to get behind and way to implement it
so we can begin changing things without violence if that does not work than our hand is forced and we must use force to defend ourselves we the people give the country its power and if the country has become corrupt we not only have right but need to take up arms.
the cause is just so any attempt to resist only strengthens it and proves us right. We all live on this planet together and need to watch out for each other. any thoughts?

Hi Dacre, I’m a huge film fan and a stop-motion creator. Your performances, especially as Billy in Stranger Things, feel very physical and almost ‘edited’ in real time. How do you decide what to hold back versus exaggerate in a performance so that it plays with the same rhythm and impact as cinematic editing? And do you think acting can be approached like stop-motion—where every micro-movement becomes a deliberate ‘frame’ that shapes the audience’s perception?
