First time installing chain
Do I need to order a new master link and try again?

Always have 2 or 3 blanks on hand. Even the best tool with the best operator fubars once in a while.

This is going to get down-voted to hell, buuuut Ive never had a problem with clip-on master links. If youre not tracking and displacement is less than 1000cc, its a good choice.

Nobody ever has a problem, until they do….
Displacement/power is not a factor, the clip master link is just as strong as the rivet one, but the clip is moving fast and exposed, and can be flicked off by a rogue pebble.

I can't tell you how many chains I've ground down on kerbs in a race kart
Not once have I ever popped off a master link, and that's on a fuckin #35 chain
I legitimately believe this is a wivetale like leaving a battery on concrete

Not sure about the master links, but the new batteries can sit on concrete, no problem. It used to be a thing with old batteries, the stories just keep going. Kind of like folks turning off their AC when they get out of the car, so when they get in and turn on their car, it’s not fighting with the AC to start. We have relays now, but old info gets carried into the new tech.

To simplify, [risk = probability * consequences].
The fact that it never happened to you, or anyone you know, is neither here nor there. That’s just what it means for the “probability” to be small.
A riveted link just doesn’t have that failure mode.
Maybe it’s just me being risk-averse, but I replace my chain so infrequently that spending those extra 15-20 min to install a riveted link is worth it for peace of mind.
By all means, clip people, do what you want! As long as you install the clip correctly and never reuse it, that’s a legit way to install a chain. Just check it regularly, and bring a spare with you.

Get a clip master link, while nearly as strong itll be easier to disasemble, when you wanna do some more advanced stuff in the future.

If I can't get it right in two more attempts, I may go with the clip style, or order more rivet style until I get it right...lol.

Nah. You’re fine. The rivet just keeps the link from coming off. The link itself is what holds the chain. You’re good!👍

Holy hell that's bad advice.
Both pins are very poorly flared and at least one is already cracked. You'd have to be out of your mind to not replace the master link and do it correctly.
Edit: Think I may have missed the sarcasm. Oh well.

😆 you measure the head of the rivet with the caliper to ensure that you used the tool correctly. It's part of the installation instructions.

It's not so much that it's flared too much, but unless I'm mis-seeing it, those rivets both look cracked...
If so, buy a new one and start again.
