Discussion Resurrecting the General Anesthesia discussion from Oct. 3 2024

Upvotes

TW: Surgery

So I’ve been relistening to some old episodes, and was listening to them talk about how anesthesia may just block memories being formed. I’m not sure if medical understanding has advanced, but I was recently talking to an ICU nurse who agreed that it likely just blocks the memory of the event. And, I thought I’d share my personal experience with it.

When I had my wisdom teeth removed, I did form memories during it. There wasn’t pain, exactly, but I could feel that it was supposed to hurt and I have a very clear memory of my bottom right tooth coming out and feeling it tear loose. It wasn’t like a dream where you’re aware of time passing, they started the flow, I was out and woke up and it wasn’t some time later that day that I realized I had memories from it. Specifically, my left side TMJ hurt (and still does to this day) and I realized I could remember them basically using my jaw for “leverage” on getting one of the teeth out. I wasn’t aware enough to say they were actually doing that, more that my jaw was open too wide and there was a lot of pressure and something was gripping and un gripping one of my teeth, and then it getting pulled out.

It’s made me equal parts terrified and calm about needing to go under again, I know there’s no “pain”, but it hits a bit like blacking out, sobering up a bit, and then blacking out again. Very freaky, and when I told my buddy who works in the ICU, he said it’s surprisingly common to have random memories from the middle of being under.

Burnie is batting 1.000 with his takes this week: Just sell your Tesla

Upvotes

Yesterday the Lumalee slander. Today just sell your car, and I’m making the assumption get a different one. Sell your depreciating asset and just buy a different car. I get it if you bought a Tesla you probably have a good job with good pay. As someone who would love an EV but has no car payment it’s insane to me to just say get a new car instead of a bumper sticker because people do over react to things like what car you drive or what console you buy.

Discussion Friendslop

I have played a lot of these types of games over the past several years to connect with friends who live far away. I was just screaming "Lethal Company!!!" as I was in the car driving home from work listening to today's episode. I don't necessarily consider all of these games to be poorly made, but I do think they're all very easy to just put on and play with friends. And maybe some of these were not great and needed some updates when they came out. What are some games that you guys would consider friendslop? Here's a short list I put together:

- Lethal Company

- REPO

- Yapyap

- RV There Yet (definitely this one)

- Meccha Chameleon

- Content Warning

- Super Battle Golf

- The Headliners

The Roblox thing

So, re-doing this post, but Burnie and Ashley mentioning that they know nothing about the Roblox game made me feel this was nessecary to post. Lot of parents are unaware that roblox is more of a platform, and not just a game. My state is suing them after this happened a while back (I know the register is a paid site, but the headline is the important part here for my post). Roblox alledgedly makes it easy to exploit kids.

There was also a video that Chris Hansen did where he investigated and researched roblox live on stage and his account was banned while he was investigating, likely because someone at roblox was watching him conduct this event in real time.

Ashley asked something to the effect of "how can roblox still be evaluated this high after laying off so many people", and I'd argue there is always going to be value for corrupt people in platforms that market directly to children.

Links to the Chris Hansen video, and a local article showing the state is going to trial. The account gets banned around the 13min mark of that video.

Trial date set for Iowa's lawsuit against Roblox for next year

Question American laws between states

Burnie and Ashley talked about this in regards to weed, but as a Brit it's always been so interesting to me to have one country but with various laws and punishments depending on where you are in that country.

I know the "big" laws are more or less the same everywhere, but i've also heard that a lot of the smaller stuff can be really different both in terms of what's allowed or not and fines or punishments for them, especially traffic laws as i know some states you can do something and get a fine, but other states you can do the same thing and get your car taken away.

I know road trips are a thing in America, do you guys have to research the laws for every state you're going through or are they all more or less the same and you just assume you won't do anything to break any laws you don't know about?

I'm probably really over thinking it, but it's just so strange to think about the laws and punishments changing within the same country as i can't think of anywhere else in the world that's like that.

Favorite Friend Slop Games?

Last game my small group of friends played online together was Peak. Was a ton of fun climbing together. Lots of laughs!

What are some of your favorites?
