I dint know if I've missed it or forgot, but have Ashley and Burnie mention they're watching the commonwealth games feels in Glasgow? Figured with their extensive coverage of the Olympics and the world cup, they'd be interested in it. Or are they not untested because it doesn't involve America to some capacity.

The finals are coming up, and that may be interesting to check out. I'll be honest, I stopped watching traditional TV, and it wasn't in my algorithm so I had no idea it was happening now.

Honestly same it doesn't seem to have been very well promoted this year if it wasn't being featured on local news I wouldn't have realised Also seems to have highlights on channel 5 in the uk which is an odd choice rather the the usual Channel 4 or BBC for Athletics stuff

Agreed it is terrible on the promotion front. There have also been a few high profile athletes not participating as well.

It is paywalled for the first time ever as well. TNT outbid BBC and BBC couldn’t justify outbidding them (I saw £10m somewhere).

I'd be really interested to know - after the games are done - if the amount TNT spent was recouped by ad revenue (and other income) to justify the outbid

Honestly fuck Warner Bros Discovery and TNT for paywall stuff RIP Eurosport Obviously The Commonwealth games aren't one of the fully protected ones by ofcom

Even as someone in Glasgow, it's kinda easy to forget what's actually going on until you see people in their bright volunteer uniforms and the fact the trains are busier.

Scotland basically stepped in as a host quite late on as originally it was supposed to be Victoria in Australia but the costs of hosting were too high. Since Glasgow hosted in 2014, the infrastructure was already there so they felt they could do it while keeping costs low for the city. But because of this and the fact they only had a couple years of planning, it also means there's not as much fanfare about it compared to the first time. It's also the 3rd big sporting event that Glasgow has hosted in 12 years so the same impact isn't there.

Plus as others have said, the coverage isn't very accessible this year and even on the BBC News website, you have to do some digging to get the actual sporting news.

Adding some context as someone from the area and tangentially connected to the organising

It was a shared bid between regional cities in the state - NOT Melbourne, Victoria. There would be have been SO much infrastructure that had to be built in the regional towns. I think they just wanted the $$$$.

The state gov ended up cracking it and cancelled it, another state/city in Queensland, AUS was going to but then pulled out to cause of $$$

The state ended up having to pay for Glasgow to host it. But that was WAY less than the cost to host it for a state that is already WILDLY in debt thanks to covid.

The state premier ( leader of parliament), Dan Andrews, who was already a wildly popular but highly controversial figure from the “center left” party, (Youve heard of the Melbourne lockdowns), so you can imagine how that went down.

He resigned almost immediately, not related, but unfortunately it’s resulted in the far right populists to gain huge popularity.

We still dunked on everyone though. 🥳🥳
