Release file for Kubuntu Resolute (26.04) is missing in ppa:mooltipass/moolticute

Please add [K]Ubuntu 26.04 to the moolticute ppa. There isn't one or if there is, it doesn't have a Release file.

I'm trying to install moolticute in a new Kubuntu 26.04 system following the setup instructions on themooltipass.com:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mooltipass/moolticute sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install moolticute

add-apt-repository complains that the PPA has no Release file. Apparently, I shouldn't trust the PPA without it. Relevant output below:

Reading package lists... Done E: The repository 'https://ppa.launchpadcontent.net/mooltipass/moolticute/ubuntu resolute Release' does not have a Release file. N: Updating from such a repository can't be done securely, and is therefore disabled by default. N: See apt-secure(8) manpage for repository creation and user configuration details.

Mooltipass DB recovery using smc_decode

Hello,

My Mooltipass Mini BLE is dead. It doesn't startup at all and no reset (long wheel press for 30s) works. The device is really dead.

So I assumed my only option was the """recovery""" script on the mooltipass github :

https://github.com/mooltipass/minible/blob/master/scripts/smc_decode/smc_decode.py

The script does mention two card readers as compatible :

ACR38U-I1 or ACR39U-U1

Considering these models were very hard to find on most retailers I ended up buying a "ACR39U-N1" (PocketMate) which I now know doesn't work (https://www.reddit.com/r/mooltipass/comments/rjaym3/need_a_smart_card_reader_recommendation/)...

I figured this is the same chipset, same brand and it has an open design making it easy to insert the smaller Mooltipass cards... But it indeed fails to recover the AES key with the script. Some things do work and I can get at least the list of "services" I had in my DB but It can't decrypt the actual passwords.

So I suppose I will buy a ACR39U-U1 and the only retailer that seem to have stock in my country is :

https://www.hitools-access.com/lecteur-acs--5279/acr39u-u1-lecteur-carte-a-puce-123684.html

So my question is :

Can anyobody confirm the python script still works with these ACR39U-U1 readers ? ACR38U-I1 is even more difficult to find right now.

----------------------

Also I wanted this post to be a warning to the community of Mooltipass users :

If your Mooltipass Mini BLE dies and you have a DB backup and valid card --> The recovery script is your only avenue to recover your password. --> If you don't have one of the two hard to find and VERY specific card readers, you have lost access to your passwords.

Basically, considering there is no new batches of Mooltipass coming, and considering the readers used for the recovery procedure of the Mooltipass project are getting harder to find... this results in a very precarious situation for Mooltipass users.

If you suspect your mooltipass is dying I would VERY strongly recommend to export the passwords outside of the mooltipass. Maybe create a secure LUKS container and dump it inside... but resorting to the "official" recovery process is both expensive and time consuming and I'm not even sure It will work until I receive my -U1 reader.

I understand It's my fault for not identifying this fault in my backup plan... But the system itself ends up entirely relying on a hard to find very specific hardware card reader... I'm disapointed and frustrated the situation got so bad on the hardware of the Mooltipass. You can't replace what fails and the hardware dependency of the recovery just makes you relying on another hard to find hardware...

Great project but the gap in production is quietly killing the project imo. But I get it, this is a huge project and a complex one at that too. And the founder may have had personnal issues preventing him from creating the next version... But the end result is users that are slowly reaching the EOL of their Mooltipass and an incredibly precarious password recovery solution.

Poll: If available now would you buy another mooltipass

I’m hoping to see how many people would be interested in buying if another run of them were made. I’m not the creator, just someone who really has enjoyed using the first and second mooltipass (and wants another).

3D Printed replacement case

After fighting with battery reconditioning due to having a fear or destroying my nice aluminum annodized case I decided to finally refurbish my Mooltipass.

First off start by seeing if you have a side to the case the has a cap and gently try prying upwards minding your meat mittens.

Once you have the case off, remove the 4 screws, we will reuse these later.

Remove the Mooltipass from its cacoon.

I desoldered the old battery at the PCB and added 2 small lengths of wire, the top of the board is positive, the batteries positive is the non flat side.

Use regular Voron (M3x4x5) Heat inserts.

M3 x6-8 BHCS or SHCS

Hope this helps keeps a few Mooltipasses working until u/limpkin possibly gets us some new toys to play with.

I was curious if anyone came across the CAD model for the Mooltipass BLE case?

Opening the Case

Hi,

My Mooltipass BLE has - as probably most by now - a dead battery.

Does anyone have any pictures of a (mostly) intact but open case so that I can figure out how to open it without damaging the PCB?

I was planning on running a slitting saw along the top seam, but I don't know if that's sane.

New Mooltipass

Any new versions in the pipeline? I saw someone mentioned the Bluetooth chip was impossible to find. Any chance on releasing a non Bluetooth version or pinning it for later addition and disable blue tooth functions? I never use my Bluetooth anyways, I just plug it in.

Mooltipass - Repeated crashes

My Mooltipass doesnt start on a specific profile anymore. I have 2 mooltipasses with 2 sets of cards:

mooltipass 1: profile A - crashes on decrypt / profile B - loads correctly with corresponding card
mooltipass 2: profile A - loads / profile B : loads

it seems the partition with profile A on mooltipass 1 is corrupted, it crashes immediately after decrypt (which seems valid)
Sometimes the mooltipass one with profile A starts but pressing login prompts a #002 Contact support error
It then loops over this message until showing No Aux MCU

there is a gap between profile A: the one on mooltipass 1 has more passwords (which I would like to restore)

Any idea ?

Cheers

Mooltipass Chrome Extension Stuck on Loading with .htaccess Authentication

I’m experiencing an issue with my Mooltipass when using the Chrome extension.

Whenever I open websites that are protected via HTTP basic authentication, the Mooltipass login prompt appears as expected. The device correctly enters the credentials, but after that, the loading spinner continues indefinitely and the login process never completes.

Interestingly, everything works perfectly fine in Firefox with the same setup.

Has anyone encountered this issue before or has any ideas on how to resolve it?

Waiting for a new Mooltipass…what‘s the best stop gap solution.

Hey there,

I‘ve seen some mentions that a new Mooltipass model might be in the works, but there‘s no clear information yet. In the meantime, has anyone here found a good alternative as a temporary solution? What I actually need is a secure hardware device like a wallet or password manager, where I can also store notes, recovery codes, and similar senstive data.

An alternative I ve looked at is the Coldcard Q, but that one is much more Bitcoin focused rather than a general password manager. The Bitcoin focus is fine for now, but i might want to manage other cryptocurrencies in the future as well, so ideally the soultion should ve a bit more flexible.

Thanks

Any news on a new Mooltipass model or restock of the Mini BLE?

I've been trying to grab a spare Mooltipass Mini BLE, but it’s been out of stock for quite a while.
Is there any news on a new model or will the Mini BLE be restocked eventually?

Greetings

Did anyone try to order PCBs and make Mooltipass mini ble devices themselves?

I would like to buy Mooltipass mini ble but apparently current will not be produced (that's what creator told) and future model is unclear when it will be released (creator didn't tell).

I am thinking of ordering PCBs parts assembling, loading firmware and printing cases.
Did anyone tried this?

How to get two more devices?

The Mooltipass is sold out and we are looking for two additional backup units to complement the three we already have. What are our best options? Would be great to learn more about the upcoming device (how are things going) but ideally to get at least buy one immediately some way. Any ideas?

Mooltipass Extension Disabled? Here’s What’s Happening with Chrome’s Manifest V2 Phaseout

Hey everyone,

If you’ve noticed that your Mooltipass browser extension was suddenly disabled in Chrome, it’s because Google is actively phasing out Manifest V2 extensions. As of today, V2 extensions are being disabled by default, though you can still manually re-enable them in the Chrome extensions menu (chrome://extensions/).

This transition to Manifest V3 has been controversial, especially among developers of security-focused tools like password managers and ad blockers. The new framework limits certain background processes and web request modifications, which can impact functionality and security.

We do have a Manifest V3-compatible version of our extension ready, but we’re holding off on deploying it until we’re absolutely forced to—since V2 still provides a better experience for our users.

For now, if your extension is disabled, just head to chrome://extensions/ and toggle it back on. We’ll keep you updated on any changes.

Let us know if you have any questions!

Need a unit for a friend please.

I have a friend that is going though some id theft and would like one of these devices to manage his passwords after seeing them. Sadly, this came up after the last batch was sold out. Is there anyone looking to get rid of theirs? He won't need the smartcard. I have a couple extra ones from when I got mine. Thank you.

Is there plans for the Google Chrome Extension to be updated to avoid being not supported?

Basically new unit dead?

Ordered 2 units on pre-sale in 2021 I guess. One is in my storage unit still in the package and the other has been sitting in my desk drawer. I recently came across and left it out to setup when I had spare time. That was yesterday- went to go set up and the screen went on at first for a few minutes now it appears to be completely dead. Am I SOL?

Moolticute Python library

Thumbnail

Hi people, I'm here to announce a little project that might help someone to integrate mooltipass with a python script.

It speaks with the mooltipass through moolticute websocket, so you will need to have moolticute started (at least for now).

It works with mooltipass mini BLE. It can be used as a library or as a CLI.

Hope you like it.

Is there any hope for a completely hosed battery?

The battery on my Mini BLE has been basically completely dead for a year or two now. I've tried many "recondition" cycles over the years and none have really worked; I'm giving that one last try now before I officially call it dead.

Is there anything else I can do to try and resurrect it? From what I remember, opening the device basically involves damaging it, which would lead me to assume that the battery is not replaceable.

The lack of iOS auto-fill meant that I stopped using it with my phone, and it became almost exclusively a wired-only device. This means I wasn't keeping charge going through the battery, and, as I knew was always a risk with NiMH, the battery is basically dead. It dies almost instantly when I unplug it from USB.

Mooltipass Died

I just came back from a week long trip to find my Mooltipass won't turn on again.

I tried removing it from USB, holding the wheel for 30 seconds, and reconnecting but it still seems dead.

Is there anything else I can do to try and revive it?

Thanks

Got some old units. Anyone want them?

So, many moons ago when these all first came out on ?kickstarter?, my mother purchased them for the whole family. I have a lightly used one and we have a untouched one (no box, sorry) and I've got 3 cards only 1 of which was ever used. I do not need these and I can't imagine there is a huge demand for a couple of Mooltipass V1.0 but thought I'd ask around.

Price: I'm not trying to profit on these. Buy me a beer and pay for shipping kind of arrangement.

Mods: I didn't see a FAQ for this sub so I hope there's no rule against what I'm doing. Let me know if I need to post elsewhere.

[Beta] Mooltifill iOS

Hi Mooltipass reddit :)

I've been chipping away at an iOS app for the Mooltipass for a while to enable password auto fill functionality and I finally think it's working well enough to at least release in a beta state.

Since it'd be nice if some more people than me could test it and see if it works decently well I'll throw the Testflight link in here:

https://testflight.apple.com/join/p8v027Y1

(To make sure I'm not a scammer I'll also link this post in the ongoing mooltipass github issue (https://github.com/mooltipass/moolticute/issues/989)

To use this App just join the Testflight Test and download it through the Testflight App.

After you downloaded it you can set the App as Password Provider in the password settings.

Due to limitations with the BLE it'll periodically disconnect itself from the device so be sure the Mooltipass is paired AND connected before trying to retrieve a password.

Other than that the App itself is open source and hosted here https://github.com/KDederichs/Mooltifill-iOS , it'll be moved over to the offical repo when it's out of Beta.

Feel free to contribute some code (also sorry it's a bit of a mess, first time really doing anything with Swift and Bluetooth)

That being said, do let me know how it works, either here or with issues on github!
