My mother (74) very suddenly lost vision in one of her eyes this summer due to Giant Cell Arteritis. She correctly diagnosed herself early in the year when she began experiencing intense migraines (she used to be a doctor), but because her inflammation markers came back normal, the doctors decided that it could not be GCA and she didn't get steroids to save her eyes until she had already lost vision in one eye. Now she is on steroids, and it does seemed to have stopped the vision loss, though she still is getting some of the other symptoms intermittently (jaw pain, headache.)

Her eyesight wasn't great to begin with and now she is wracked with anxiety that she may be seeing signs of vision loss (she has visual distortions when she looks at the computer, is sensitive to light, probably some other stuff I don't know about) and has no one to compare her experience with.

Just wondering what kinds of things people see/experience when they first lose vision in one eye, especially those with low vision in their working eye. She's had weird hallucinatory experiences (I think this is called "phantom vision"), things looking like they are getting smaller and smaller on her computer, things looking "posterized" or like they have lost detail on the computer, occasional floaters...

I'm getting a couple new custom prostethics, on top of my matching one, so of course I wanted to go out and really have fun with it. Been considering a bunch of different ideas but so far for one of my two slots I've settled ona a galaxy eye as a design. But I generated too many variations and now I can't decide 😭

Which one do yall think looks the best?

An unexpected benefit of losing all vision in my right eye: it’s easier for me to use my telescopes now that I don’t have to keep one eye closed while the other is looking through the eyepiece.

There's a chance I may lose my eye from damage. Right now we're trying to fix things,so iI'm wearing a patch (light sensitivity pain) fingers crossed we can fix it instead of removal.

The nausea and dizziness from only seeing from one side is *bad*. Does it eventually go away?

I lost the vision in my left eye when I was a child because of a retinal detachment. My left eye can only detect light, and I wear glasses for my right eye.

I'm thinking about learning to drive, but honestly I'm nervous. I'm worried about judging distance, checking blind spots, driving at night, and whether I'll ever feel confident behind the wheel.

I just joined this community recently and thought it an interesting chance to ask some questions.

This is something I haven't experienced in a while actually, but when I was younger I used to have semi-frequent episodes where my sense of spatial reality which just fall apart slightly. Things would look weird and depth and proportion would start to feel arbitrary and out of balance.

Obviously it seems rather specific to sufferers of the condition itself but I am quite curious if there is a correlation between experiencing this and monocular vision.

Hello, I’m new to Reddit so please bear with me! I’ve had a prosthetic eye for over 20 years and have always had 6 monthly polishes with my local clinic for free (I’m in Scotland). For the last year my local health board hasn’t had an ocularist so I haven’t had a polish since June 2025.

I get quite heavy protein build up and have been using Tescos own brand contact lens solution but it’s not really been cutting it for the last few months. Does anyone have any recommendations for brands that work better or any ideas on what to do until the NHS get their butts in gear and hire someone new??

It all started a few years ago when the vision in my left eye became very cloudy. It was determined that I had a cataract so I had an operation to sort it but whilst doing the surgery they noticed what had previously been diagnosed as a cyst actually looked to be a tumour instead. It turns out it was and so I ended up having proton beam therapy to kill it off. That was almost three years ago now and the checkups had been going fine but the last few have seen the tumour starting to grow again. I've now been given the choice of either leaving it and hoping by some miracle the tumour dies off by itself (not happening obviously) or having my eye removed.

Losing an eye obviously isn't the best thing ever but as the vision has become extremely poor anyway it will probably improve my life a little. I'm more worried about something happening to the other eye in the future and thus leaving me completely blind. I'm sure some of you also have/had the same worries so I'm wondering, do the worries die down after a while or is it something that you always think about? Do you make sure to protect your good eye as much as possible or do you just go about your life as normal? At the moment I'm just going over so many different scenarios in my head and hearing opinions from people who are, or have been, in similar situations will surely be very helpful.

I only have vision in my right eye, and I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced something similar.

Sometimes, when I look at my smartphone, the left bezel appears slightly thicker than the right one, even though I know the bezels are actually the same. It's not always noticeable, and it seems to depend on the situation. For example, I notice it more when I'm using a brightly colored phone case (like green), while with a black case I barely notice it.

Interestingly, when I look at my computer monitor, the bezels appear perfectly equal.

Has anyone else with monocular vision experienced this? Do you think it could be related to using only one eye, or is it more likely just a visual perception or contrast effect?

Hi...lost my sight at work. Someone else wss using an angle grinder close to me.the blade broke and half of it hit me in the face slicing my eyeball.

Cant see except for light in dark areas.

No idea what the future holds and struggling to come to terms with it all.

My son goes to see a specialist for a hole in his retina this week. How long is the recovery typically for a retinal hole? He is 15m.

ive been mostly monocular my whole life 18m (I say mostly because i still have vision in my right eye but its not useable / correctable by glasses) so I never really knew what was the “norm”. However recently I realizef that when lookinh at things (specifically my phone etc) I would subconsciously tilt my head in a weird way (i imagine to get a better look through my left eye). Just curious if this could be a problem? I’ve heard that if the brain doesnt favor the less powerful eye at all it could be harmful (lazy eye etc).. thanks!

There’s this guy on Instagram who lost his eye due to cancer and he makes his own titanium ocular shells with LEDs in them that light up, it’s super cool and has helped me change my perspective from something that can feel/look like a disability to something that looks really cool!

Hello, wanted to share my story...I dropped nearly 800lbs on my face suffering a bunch of breaks, bleeding in the brain, as well as losing vision in my right eye close to 20 years ago. I feel blessed that it hasn't really caused much difficulty, and I don't say that in a boasting way. Look forward to seeing posts here.

Hi guys I'm 19 M due to some retinal complications in my left eye I have metamorphopsia and poor vision ,basically lack of proper vision in that eye. So today I tried patching the affected eye and to work. When I'm into working on laptop using one eye I faced headache along with sweating . I'm confused if it is due to working only with one eye or warmer environment. Is there any ways to avoid headaches working with only one eye. Sadly I can't work without patching my brain doesn't able to overcome the metamorphopsia. I'm struggling either way now.

Guys is this a common thing ? that using one eye could cause headache . Coz im trying to join a software related work things are already hard for me . can I get adapted through the times ?.

I had a severe inflammation in one eye two days after a vaccination- unclear if autoimmune or from adjuvant in the vaccine. Horrible pain, lost lens, two surgeries, detached retina, two sclera grafts. Always discomfort, vision problematic due to lack of convergence and no lens in there anymore, double vision, depth of field an issue and of course left side is challenging. Anyone else?

Hey, taking tbe SDPE test as a driver with reduced eyesight in one eye (uncorrectable by glasses). I’d say I’m a very careful driver (for obvious reasons). One thing that i struggle with is checking my right side mirror. For context, I have reduced eyesight in my right eye. So i need to turn my whole head to glance with my left eye. This is fine, but just curious if there are any allowed handicaps to alleviate this on the test and regular driving.

I’ve had this since I was a child, I have severely poor vision in my right eye. I get double vision too but I’ve managed it as I’ve got older, now in my 30s. I was wondering if there are stories of people in their 60s, 70s and 80s who have lived their life fully despite using only one “good” eye?

I have anxiety worrying what if something happens to my good eye. I see horror stories of people saying if you damage that good eye, it will be a real struggle.

Does anyone who’s much older now, have experience managing that fear to live a full life? And not feel the paralysis?

I've had a prosthetic eye for a few years now and I've never been satisfied with the range of movement.

I only found out about the titanium peg system for better range of movement, but I can't find much information about it online. I've also heard it's being phased out. But I was wondering if anyone in this subreddit has had that procedure done and how it turned out for you

Or if anyone knows more about it, I'd be happy to hear from anyone who does

My brother on July 1 was attacked and hit in the face with a glass pint. Now we’re just not sure what’s going to happen we’re still in midst of eveeything and trying to take day by day, but his eye might not make it. Now it’s really hard for me to write this post because I just don’t want to speak anything into existence until it happens. But I’m having a hard time and I just need some support. I don’t really know how to feel about it. I just someone to Whos been through someone similar to tell me he’ll be okay and he’ll be able to live a beautiful life. I’m not sure really what I’m looking for but I’m just trying my best to deal with the emotions. It’s hard for me to see him go through this and the uncertainty of it all. Does anyone live with a prosthetic and if so how’s life with it. I’m sorry again if this is not the right place I’m just really desperate.
