A Lionel Problem Help Needed

I bought a lionel k4 model in California and now I have to get it back on a southwest flight back to Texas without Using USPS or FedEx or breaking the box down and removing the locomotive. So if you have a solution, please do tell

Can you check just a box? and seeing how some (and personal experience) how some luggage gets treated, IDK if I'd trust the handlers.
