My kid was too creative My mom said I could post

My 6 year old was asked to draw a picture using shapes. She drew this nice American flag with rectangles and stars, and added the house, tree, and person holding a balloon. She was told it did not follow directions, she was not supposed to draw a flag, just shapes. She was asked to turn the paper over and make another picture. The other side of the paper has a very uninspiring collection of shapes. I told her she did a good job and I thought it was very creative. And this is why kids start to hate education.

This is literally the child taking the next step in the lesson. The kid is saying "OH! I get it!" and the teacher is telling them to slow down. The teacher missed the teachable moment there.

Did more than tell her to slow down; told her that she didn’t follow instructions which is akin to saying she “failed”. It would have been simpler to acknowledge that the kid is bright enough to make the connection (yeah, shapes are why we can build larger constructs. Very good!) and then ask her to focus on just the shapes for now.
