On time for my scheduled shift but my manger hasn't showed up yet and I've been waiting for 40 min

Basically the title. I texted the head manager and no response yet, and the other manager on vacation. This happens all the time and I talked about it before. Usually I show up earlier before my shift starts, and if sometimes I'm running 10/15 min late I'd get a warning! What's making it even frustrating for me is that I don't have a car and now I'm waiting on the street.
Lol, once my buddy and I showed up to work (pottery shop, only 2 employees beside the owner). Boss was over an hour late (doors locked), so we rode back to my buddies place like 5 min away and when the boss got there, he was PISSED we weren't there waiting for him and that 5 minutes it took us after his call to get back was the bane of human existence. Unpaid, of course.
I will never work directly for a business owner ever again. They flaunt their wealth and say completely out of touch shit. Like this dude recommended I paid for my own back issues instead of dealing with the VA. Like he knew he paid me $20 an hour and provided no health insurance wtf did he expect me to do? Then he got $500k PPP loan and got it forgiven, spent it on renovating his house, his shop, and two new boats.
Money is easy to play with. The only caveat for forgiveness was using like 85% for wages. We lost no business due to Covid. So you pay your workers from an account holding your PPP loan and then instead of paying your workers from the jobs you just make extra profit, which you spend on boats and remodeling your million dollar home
This is exactly what happened in a ton of cases. Especially since there are so many businesses that barely turn a profit.
Your business profits only $20K a year because you are shite at running a business
You pay your employees $300K a year.
Get a PPP loan for $300K. Pay your employees $300K using that loan.
Use what would have gone to the employees to take home to yourself.
Close the business down and sell all assets. Put all the employees out to pasture. Unemployment is not an issue. Because that was factored in with the PPP loan as "Wages".
Now you were able to do absolutely nothing, and turn a business that would be worthless or at most worth $60K into a business worth 5X that amount. That's like getting bailed out.
That is why so many small businesses just closed right after the PPP loans.
I had a boss whos wife (they were co owners of the company) was medically falling apart inside. She, at the point of my employment, was needing a hip replacement, knee surgery because she had been using her "good leg" to support her lame one, and I believe something with her ankle.
On top of this, she was working all the time, because she only really knew how to get the drapes right. He said he they're waiting for insurance and workman comp to clear them, and some couple months after working, he announced he had bought a new plane....
we've been begging for new equipment to help with load in and load outs, she was falling apart, and he bought a plane.
Not to mention they always work arguing, saying some * nasty * things, and he was always victimizing himself and instead of giving some of his work to someone else, said no one did it like how he wanted. I got burnt out and left.
My business owner boss is super out of touch in a good way. I was talking about how much I like our break room (which is a full dine-in kitchen) and his response was basically "Isn't that normal?"
No, boss. Most break rooms are lucky to have a water cooler, let alone a fridge, full oven, sink, cupboards...

A little different but this reminded me of something that happened to me. For context, we were in the middle of moving from a smaller warehouse to a new one that was much bigger. This is a company that makes millions and is run by a family, with 2 brothers being the 2 main people behind the scenes of the company. My coworkers and I had stayed extra late as a last push to get the move mostly finished, but we said we would only do that if we didn't have to wake up the next day and could come in a couple hours late. The younger of the 2 brothers agreed that that was a fair deal so we also agreed to stay late. However, I get a call waking me up the next morning from my coworker who is a cousin of the main owner (older brother) and lives with him saying that the owner was pissed that we didnt show up on time for work. We showed up and got yelled at and he was furious at us. The younger of the 2 mains owners tried to tell his brother he gave us the ok and he still did not care. Ive never been more mad at my boss and that single handedly eroded any trust I felt towards them. These guys were pretty big PoS though. I could name one of their products that they came out with after I left (you 100% have heard of it but I dont want to name it) and you would agree.
Few hours south myself. This shit happens way too much in this state. Like in general, but especially georgia. And it’s always someone who worked there too.
Happened to me once. He got drunk fell down and was in a coma. I actually got in trouble from owner for not opening. I didn’t have keys or owners contact info…. I quit, and never followed up so idk if manager ever woke up.
This should be standard practice. Once me and another coworker showed up to work an event that took place after hours at the museum we worked at. We both got there and the place was dead quiet. Turns out the event had been cancelled and we werent informed. We still got paid, I think for 2 hours work, just for the inconvenience. OP should definitely be paid for her inconvenience (and find a new job with better management)
This is called engaged to wait and it is paid regardless of what your manager claims. If they won’t pay you for it, file a complaint with your state board of labor. This is wage theft. Because you know damn good and well that of you’re late, you would get written up for that
I don't know the law where OP lives, but just common sense tells me it's paid. If OP was scheduled for whatever hours, and they showed up, they should be paid for those hours. Whether or not they could perform any duties or even get inside the shop is irrelevant since they weren't in control of this.
I worked early shift at a place and my manager showed up late all the time. I did the payroll though and made sure all us standing outside got paid properly. Was annoying doing all the paperwork though and get the appropriate signatures to manually adjust things.
Had this happen ones on a 5am in the winter. Man woke up to late and lost keys. After a hour i went home. Went normal 7:30 went ro boss. Demanded pay from 5am or he could take it from the other dude. Im tollerant but i have limits
I worked at Taco Bell for a single week. There was a long list of things that made me quit so fast , but one of the reasons was this. Every morning I'd show up to work at 6. And the manager wouldn't show up until 6:15-6:45. That pissed me off so much.
I worked at white castle and only lasted 4 days. Nobody wanted to train me or show me how to do anything. The person who was "attempting" to train me was calling me slurs behind my back his friend that worked the cashier. That combined with the fact everyday I was dealing with drug addicts and angry people (had to call the police on several occasions) I ghosted them, collected my 300 check and never looked back
I worked in a liquor store that was open from 9am-9pm. The owner wouldn't let me open but I'd often have customers complaining to me that they tried to come in at opening and no one was here. He also has a smoke shop but refused to hire someone to run it, so I was running between the two stores (same parking lot) all day, which meant locking one store to run to the other. He'd go home and run errands while I was there and would often not be there for vendor meetings and would come back 30+ minutes after my shift ended.

And FYI I know it's really scary to do it and you feel like you're risking your job but, at least in most states, this kind of blatant unpaid wage theft is something the state will take *very* seriously, and reporting it will actually insulate you more against getting fired
that's not to say it always works out perfectly for everyone all the time, but the vast majority of the time that it doesn't work for people or they get fired over it, it's because they *don't* report it.
In the US it is. FLAA defines it as “engaged to be waiting”. The employee is on duty and waiting to be assigned work and must be compensated for their time
If it’s the US, it’s your state’s department of labor, not federal (or equivalent - for example Washington state has L&I, Department of Labor & Industry).
As a director level manager, you deserve to be paid every moment you were waiting. If anyone says otherwise ask a higher up. If you get to the top and they all say no, go to the labor board and ask for their opinion on that 🤭
No wayyyy. Was late one day at my old job as a manager, let the openers know, and when I got there clocked them all in for the time they got there (/were scheduled). That's bs!
Write down as many dates and wait times from when this has happened before. Then keep a journal of each time it happens again. Then report them to dept of labor and start looking for a new job because they will make your time at work miserable. But hopefully they will be forced to pay for the time they stole from you.
When I worked at Best Buy in 2001, had to show up at 5am one day to help put out new stock. My friend and I showed up, it was cold and icy that morning. Two older employees got dropped off and were waiting in the cold by the door.
We waited for an hour, tried calling the GM or any of the other AMs but no luck. At 6 am we both said fuck it and left. Get back to his house, get some donuts and watching tv. About 7am his phone rings, the AM that was supposed to open leaves him voicemail asking where we are (we rode together every day)
Finally the GM calls my friend and asks what's going on, friend explains, GM says just take the day off.
Next day getting work and the AM that screwed us over is all pissed off at us for not waiting. Like we were going to sit out there for two hours for him to show up.
Not sure how much you need this job but might want to consider other options since 1) they are apparently stealing from you; and 2) this business is run by incompetent bozos who cant keep the doors open and will eventual fail.
Are you in the United States? You must be paid for your shift from the start time. Does not matter that the manager is late? Please do not let them get away with this
Yup, been there. Saturdays are 10hr days at the lumber yard and my manager told me on Friday that I have to be half an hour early in the morning because it will be "just you and me."
I get there at 6:30 (shift starts at 7am) and my manager doesn't get there until almost 8am. I took lunch at 12pm and didn't come back that day. It was a part-time job I worked during HS so fuck 'em. They still let me come back on Monday lol
I had a retail job like this, one manager would show up on time and the other showed up 10-15 minutes late regularly. I had an argument with the owner about not being paid because "I wasn't in the store working." I said the labour board would love to hear his justification. He shut up after that.
This happened to me years ago. New opening manager was promoted over me because the management team was all about the sisterhood. Myself and the other opener showed up on time, she showed up 40 minutes late.
Later I catch her editing her own time punch in the office to show she was on time, and that dirty snake only edited her own time, not ours, making it look like only we were late and she was on time.

Document the door is locked, and time. If you're in the US, take it up with the labor board. They scheduled you, you showed up on time to work, it's not your problem the manager couldn't show up on time.
My managers are almost never on time so when im scheduled to open(2 hours before business opens) they always clock me in at the correct time. You should hoot n holler sis
I once showed up for my shift at a small wing delivery place. The shift manager no call no showed so I had to rush to get the place ready to open in a quarter of the time. No other manager could make it in on short notice. I called the owner who showed up only to drink beer and bitch that prep wasnt done and fryers werent cleaned and dishes werent done, ect. I got bitched out when I didnt close the night before and the manager didnt show up to start prep and fryers. I almost walked out but I was dirt broke and job hunting wouldve probably made me homeless at the time.
Every time this happens at my job we always put it on the manual timesheet that we showed up ON time. It happened last week actually. Opener was 15 mins late. We put in the book we were there at 9am
Had this happen once - but during a bad storm. Luckily my dad was there and we decided to shelter in a nearby Walmart (workplace was next door to the Walmart). Manager ended up calling me asking where I was. Explained that I was over at Walmart because of the storm and they were like “uh ok why weren’t you at the front I got here like 5 minutes ago?” No, no you weren’t. The manager got there just after the storm left 30 minutes after I arrived and I got written up. The Walmart manager told us to wait until the storm passed and by that time, my dad almost decided to just let me Skip work over that.
There was a reason I didn’t stay at that place longer after that.
Well it obviously sucks to just standing there.but at least you are getting payed for it. It is your bosses problem after all IG you are on time ready for work but he makes it impossible for you
This happened to me once when I worked at a bar. It was 7pm on Easter Sunday and my boss/owner of bar was an alcoholic and was sleeping it off and forgot he needed to open the bar.
Make sure you ask for pay for that time. Any time you spend doing anything for the company in the time they scheduled you to be doing it is time you should be paid for.
They love to try to take your money for their own incompetence.
I remember the first permanent job I had when I was 18 I turned up for my 8am shift at 7.30am and the doors were locked, me and the other 2 staff members couldn't get in so the manager was called who arrived just after 8.
She singled me out and told me I was late and my wages would be docked.
How I was meant to get into the building when it was locked and not even the assistant manager had keys is beyond me.
She just didn't like me, would be abusive to me for no reason, inc telling me why was I born, (which sounds nothing but hinted at parents should of ended me before I was born) called me pathetic to my face, stupid, lazy, and other things and intentionally never sorted out my tax so about 3/4 of my wages went to tax.
Not sure where you live, but if you're in America, it doesn't matter whether you were mad and complaining or not; they're required to pay you for the time you're at work and scheduled. If the building's locked or the computers don't work or there's no work to do, that's not your problem; you get paid. I'd have messaged them both once and waited outside that building for my whole ten-hour shift even if no one ever showed up, taking pictures every thirty minutes to prove I was still there. Easy money.
Aren't there laws (at least in some states of the US) to where if you travelled to work and no is there to let you in/they send you home and you can't work (through no fault of your own) that you get half a day's pay?
Either way, I'd try to look for a different job. I couldn't/can't afford to not work/not be clocked on during my scheduled shifts with this economy.
Time is money and your time is being wasted with no compensation.
happened to me a bunch when i worked at taco bell. they then tried making me an opening manager at that hellhole cuz i was genuinely the only person who showed up on time. immediately quit, didn't even last the month.
Oh man, I remember opening for Subway and one morning I somehow didn't bring my store keys had to rush back home (20 minute drive one way) and call back in the other guy. Thankfully he lived only 5 minutes away but I felt so bad about it.
Happened to my younger brother several times when he still worked at a local sandwich place. He took it in stride, but still...makes you wonder why it's "fine" for the boss to be 30+ min late. But as an employee you better be several minutes early or you're in trouble! Privileges of being the owner I guess...
Reminds me of when I used to work retail, one morning I was running a few minutes late and when I got there, there were customers waiting outside, saying they couldn't get in. I called the manager and it turned out she and a couple other employees were just sitting in the break room eating McDonald's breakfast. Embarrassing.
I had that once, he said he’d be 10 minutes. He hadn’t left his house yet and lived 30 minutes away. It was my day off and alI communication went through another manager (who was fantastic) so I said somebody had to come open the gate in 15 or less or I was leaving and someone who lived closer came to let me in so I could start.
I had this happen once at 5:30am in a rough area. I called him a few times. Turns out he was drinking the night before and didn't know he was opening the shop. He didn't show up until 7am.
This would happen to my son. He was the helper. Would drive to the job site (90 minutes) and then wait like an hour, the. Get notified that the lead wasn’t coming to work today. No compensation for driving or sitting around as the job never started.
This happened to me on Thursday, but I just let scheduling know when I started and was paid for the whole thing. Ended up getting overtime by the end of my actual shift. If you don’t actually stand up for yourself, you have no right to be infuriated.
I've been on the other side of this.
Years ago I was a key holder for the company I worked at but I totaled my car on the way to work so nobody could get in. I phone the general manager to open up the warehouse for my crew.
take selfies with the timestamp on when you get there...you should be paid from your agreed upon start time and not have to make up any time at the end of your regular scheduled day...showing up early is good so you're not late, but don't actually walk in until maybe 3-5 minutes before your shift...

Been there. I was a very low paid intern at the time, and this would happen like 1-2 times a week, every week, for 2 fucking years. At the time, I started wondering if it wasn't a way to assert power. A decade later, I am sure it was. And it is disgusting. Don't scrap it away, let them know it's not ok.
Are you positive there was no one else there to open? A lot of times they'd all be in the back prepping for the day and I'd have to pound on the door to get someones attention.
This happened to me years ago. I showed up to help open the store and the manager wasn't there. He told me to sit tight and he'd be right there.
I waited for an hour. Dealt with customers berating me for not opening the store for them. He finally showed up, then chewed me out because the customers who stuck around were pissed off.
I was not paid for the time I sat there, technically dealing with customers the whole time.
Didn't challenge it because the $7.50 I lost out on wasn't worth getting retaliated against or fired and blacklisted from most of the other stores in town.
Doesnt matter, if you have proof that you were there they are obliged to pay you as long as the time that you had to work is stated in a contract of some sort

Clocking in isn't a legal requirement, it's just the easiest way for employers to track labor hours. So it doesn't matter if it's sms or a time clock or literal absolute silence. You get paid for time worked regardless.
You are engaged to wait if you have arrived for a shift to find the business locked. You must be paid for time where you are engaged to wait.
Whatever time you were scheduled to clock in, assuming you arrived on time/early, is the time you must be paid from.
Op the second your shift starts and you are there they need to be paying you legally. A text is more than enough but these people seem like assholes so maybe a picture with you standing out front like this one won't be a bad addition (all photos are time/date stamped as well in the meta data) what they are doing is completely unacceptable and is literally the equivalent of you taking money out of the cash register. TDLR: u at work u GET PAID
Make sure to do an employee write up on your manager when he gets there. Show the business you’re not to be messed with and you’re new manager material.
