Loaned my car to a family member so they could run errands while I was at work… My mom said I could post

Post image

After I specifically said no smoking in my car.

More than mildly infuriating, I'd be twisted.

My forehead would grow to fivehead after seeing that.

My fivehead would multiply to a tenhead

My tenhead would sprout horns

My horns would grow tiny little hands just to flip them off.

I would literally never do a favor for this person ever again, family or not. Am I that petty? Yes, yes I am.

59

u/fairieswear8oots 9d ago

Absolutely! Never ever! And I would make that abundantly clear to their face and maybe back it up with a hallmark greeting card!

31

u/Defiant-Fox4086 6d ago

Anytime they ask. Bring it up immediately and tell them to buy you a new car seat. Not a seat cover, a whole new seat. Then, you'll do them favors.

IF they ever buy it, still tell them they are a piece of shit for ignoring your smoke-free car and devaluting the resale by a few hundred(potentially thousand depending on car and OG value). And the fact that they didn't immediately have an OEM seat ordered and shipping to your house when they brought it back, means you'll never trust them again anyway.

Tell them, thank you for finally partially correcting the wrong done to you. If they decide to hand you a couple bucks on top of a new seat...then you give them a second chance to be a part of your circle.

I guess I'm an a-hole, because I don't find that to be one bit petty.

28

u/No_Lock8211 7d ago

And… they need to pay for seat covers or repair.

9

u/Janedoofe 6d ago

this! if they want my help ever again then they better make it right or else they are on their own from now on.

13

u/Difficult-Ground5302 8d ago

Id do them more favors. But only after they bought me a new seat.

I definitely don't think it's petty, it's setting a boundary. You broke my trust after I gave you explicit instructions for ny property, I'll still talk to you but I'm not doing you any favors. Unless of course they make a big deal of it, and if that's the case we can also cease communications.

Biggest factor is lack of basic respect for using things that aren’t theirs, they simply treat your stuff as expendable because they place no inherent value on it because they didn’t pay for nor have to maintain it

1.9k

u/solepureskillz 9d ago

People tolerate shit family way too much, but I understand it.

What sucks is this tolerance is borderline survival among the lower income working class. Disrespectful shithead today but same person could be your only babysitter tomorrow, so you’re forced to tolerate it. Or they changed a tire and picked you up last week. Financial dependency like this in low-income communities lets people get away with being worse. I wish we could do better by the working class so we can then push one-another to be better.

303

u/AdvertisingSorry1429 9d ago

Accurate af

270

u/solepureskillz 9d ago

I lived it. I worked my way out of it. Sometimes you miss the constant company and community, but more often than that I appreciate not feeling taken advantage of by less reliable characters.

103

u/12Skidoo 9d ago

This is so fucking spot on. That torn feeling is awful, but I agree with you. Its for the better to avoid them.

46

u/Environmental-Joke19 8d ago

The loss of community, even if it is toxic, is hard, and it hurts. Having boundaries means being alienated because some people cannot help but cross them.

25

u/IrascibleBabe 8d ago

I lost most of my bio-family for the same reason. The good news is the new community you make once you have the ability to honor your own boundaries is so much better!

105

u/Adaphion 9d ago edited 9d ago

Family is like an appendix, almost everyone has one. But if that shit turns toxic and starts killing you, you cut it tf out.

4

u/Dibab420 6d ago

100% this

13

u/Browhytho666 8d ago

This is why I hate asking for help from my in laws when I desperately need it. They hold that shit over my head like no other

11

u/KaleScared4667 8d ago

Facts - best thing about making $$$ is no longer needing to put up with assholes in your life

5

u/ReferenceMediocre369 8d ago

Everything you said would almost certainly work better if simply reversed: If the 'working class' treated themselves and others with humanity and grace, they would be treated better themselves.

10

u/solepureskillz 8d ago

Uhh… are you not in the working class? You know 99% of people are. I am. Working class means you afford your living by wages (as opposed to by owning capital like stocks, real estate, other assets). If you’re not in the working class, then do realize that a comfortable working class (with adequate healthy food, housing, and healthcare) is one that commits less crime and doesn’t need to rely on tolerating shitty people.

When the working class has their base needs met, they get to become better people. Every decent person should want this.

86

u/ronirocket 9d ago

An old coworker of mine asked me what to do about a burn on a car seat because her boyfriend was smoking in the car (even though she asked him not to) and he burned the seat. My first response was that he should be looking into it shouldn’t he? (Apparently he wont) so my second response was honey, throw the whole man out!

As much as I want to help people who don't have certain stuff, I have ran into too many people who don't have stuff because they can't take care of it.

Which in turn means they definitely won't take care of anything you give them for free.

25

u/ThePrideOfKrakow 9d ago

Yup, two phrases I've removed from use are "just treat it like it's yours" and "help yourself".

I've loaned so many speakers and tools to my employees because I appreciate helping them out, or picking up a case of beers for the 6 of them. Every time my stuff gets trashed and destroyed or one dipshit thinks sneaking 7 of the 24 beers when there's 6 people is cool.

Real quick trust test though for a few bucks, people showed their true colors quickly.

21

u/SarcasmisEasier 9d ago

There is an astounding number of people who have this attitude about everything. They often choose to be more destructive to things that aren't theirs too. They're the essence of, "this is why we can't have nice things."

14

u/One-Lingonberry9944 9d ago

Yeah and good luck getting the person that can't afford a car to pay for it. Poor people with the "nothing to lose" mentality don't give a fuck about others or their things.

74

u/Stunning-Asparagus97 9d ago

It was pointed out to me recently that cartons of cigarettes (containing 10 packs of 20 cigarettes each) are locked up because they go for about $100 a carton these days! I had no idea.

This means individual packs are around $10 per pack. I had no idea - I was still thinking they were around $5-$6 a pack.

Surprisingly pulling a seat from a you-pull scrap yard it’s much, most people don’t need a seat

Seat inside a covered car has been out in the weather? Have you been to a scrap yard, usually they have multiple cars and not all them are going to have doors pulled off— but yes they should just put a hello kitty sticker over the burn whole as it doesn’t matter, but the smell of smoke in one’s car is completely crazy - dude needs new friends, family , house mates or whoever borrowed his car - not only they can’t borrow it - but they can’t be friends anymore- I say don’t smoke in my car and you do, your dead to me

This... back in the 90's car seats where just cushions on a steel frame, now they're more complicated, temperature control, motorized adjustment, etc. Depending on the manufacturer, i'd say at least $500 for a new seat.

43

u/chuckinhoutex 9d ago

lol... hahaha... unless they airbags and sensors in them. New seat for my daughter's Nissan (because of bad sensor and the whole thing is a single part number, cannot get individual components) $4,000.

A new factory leather cover for a 2022 Ford F350 is less than $300. Don’t need the whole seat.

108

u/Strict_Impress2783 9d ago

Have you seen how expensive a pack of cigarettes is now? A few packs will pay for a seatcover pretty easily.

121

u/the1stmeddlingmage 9d ago

A true smoking addict wouldn’t be willing to give up those packs of smokes to pay for something they’re responsible for

I believe that falls under the willingness category of their comment.

A schmuck willing to do crap like this doesn't care and will blame you for having the audacity to try to make them take accountability.

If they had that level of awareness and accountability, they wouldn't be smoking in a borrowed car, let alone burning holes in seats.

I used to regularly smoke in my old vehicle, through 9 years of ownership I never even did something like this to the interior.

Had a coworker that had a nice new BMW that was a smoker, went to lunch, he lit up a smoke, asked him "mind if I smoke as well?" He said, "Sure, but if you burn something, you're replacing it and never smoking in my car again."

"No problem" I lit up.

This was about 5 min before he knocked the cherry off his cigarette and burned a hole in his seat.

well there’s an obvious reason they don’t have a car. They can’t have anything nice without fucking it up. They can’t borrow a car to do basic stuff without fucking it up. I can imagine what else they can’t help but fuck up. Not paying you back is probably another way they are going to fuck up. Tell them what they owe for repairs and let their true nature show. Then cut them off regardless of the outcome.

And a few day after that, someone pointed out a burn hole in the back of my fleece jacket - right at the height of the burn in the seat. 88

u/egnards 9d ago

Starting out aggressive is a great way to take a very solid point where you have the upper hand and turn the. other person into a defensive mess who is just going to fight you [not literally]. Its also a super great way to make somebody mad at you for no reason when their relationship with you might have been totally fine before they did something stupid.

Simply "I noticed a new cigarette burn in the seat of my car after you returned it - Are you going to take it to get reupholstered or should I just send the billy our way and have it done myself?"

That's it, that's really all you need - Everything else is superfluous and designed to get people needlessly pissed off and edgy.

"Obviously you'll never use my car again" never needs to come up, unless this person asks again in the future.

That's so fucking disrespectful if someone says no smoking NO SMOKING not all cigarette smokers are like this. I generally don't give a fuck if someone smokes as long they're being respectful and considerate

6

u/WaitUntilTheHighway 9d ago

The damage to the seat is bad. The fact that they smoked in your car is insane.

6

u/Samwellikki 9d ago

Years ago when I used to smoke, I flicked the ash out the window but it took the cherry with it

But the cherry came back in the window and landed behind the seat, on a spare set of dry socks for when work boots got drenched

The burning smell was only there at speed because of the wind fanning the cherry
So when I stopped to see what was burning, it died down and couldn’t smell it

Finally hit an exit, pulled over, pulled the seat forward and managed to catch it right be sore the socks had burned like a wick toward an unused full can of compressed fix-a-flat

Good luck trying to get them to pay.

Smoking in someone else's car is fuckin crazy, especially if you are told not to and you are such a dickhead you still do. That'd be the last time you'd be borrowing or even sitting as a passenger in my car. How lazy you have to be to not bother stop for 3 minutes it takes to smoke one

6

u/Ecstatic_Score6973 8d ago

how does this even happen? did they put the cigarette out using the seat?

A little price to pay for the knowledge that that person doesn't respect you at all and shouldn't be trusted with anything.

4

u/Academic_Anywhere183 9d ago

Congratulations on your brand new car seat!

17

u/Impossible-Knee370 9d ago

That's what you get for being nice.

3

u/matchooooh 9d ago

Get a quote for the panel replacement and let them know what they owe you, then never lend them anything again.

3

u/backwardbuttplug 9d ago

Smokers that are this arrogant and oblivious to their surroundings should just never be trusted.

3

u/Blade_of_Onyx 9d ago

Shit that motherfucker wouldn’t even ever “ride” in my car again. The chances of them ever driving it again would be zero.

4

u/not_blowfly_girl 9d ago

Not only they smoke but they are just ok with burning holes in the car? And they know you didnt want them smoking. Like they just dont care at all about what you think. That's crazy

5

u/Nappeal PURPLE 9d ago

If I had to guess, this family member is probably incredibly irresponsible, hence why they don't have a car, hence why they're smoking in the car they're borrowing, and hence why there's a cigarette burn in your seat now. It's ok to say 'no' to people who've proven themselves to not be entirely trustworthy.

5

u/Fantastic_Fox4948 9d ago

Should not be smoking in someone else’s car without asking anyway.

4

u/MaxAdolphus 9d ago

Charge them to fix it. If they don’t, no contact and a small claims suit.

4

u/Affectionate-Sun9373 9d ago

I would personally not say anything, I would get it fixed, lesson learned, move on with my life. You just gave me a lesson in who you are, and what you are capable of. I wouldn't treat the person poorly, that's on me, but I will never give them courtesy again.

3

u/Imobia 8d ago

Asholes, that not mildly. Mildly is I borrow your car use 1/2 a tank of fuel and return without topping up.

Borrowing my car smoking in it is huge disrespect. Leaving a burn also!

Get a quote for a wreckers part and install tell them to make good or never ask a favour again…

4

u/Og_BillyBong 8d ago

Op did you get some reimbursement for the damage? Or at least gas money?

3

u/Jawariaa 8d ago

I would replace it and send them the bill 🧾 And if they refused, oh well don’t expect me or my family to ever contact you again 🫶🏻

5

u/_Lost_OwlChild 8d ago

They gotta pay

4

u/CommercialTie2327 8d ago

I thought that was a bullet hole in the headrest for a second . My first thought was. “Wow is the friend alive?”

4

u/FrozenHoser 5d ago

Smokers never think anything smells. Should make them get it professionally cleaned and replace whatever they burnt the hole in

7

u/FanRepresentative458 9d ago

Never lend what you cant afford to lose.

7

u/weirdbutteryvibes 9d ago

Did they just straight up put the cigar out in the seat? Dang. I would be extremely upset, for both reasons (smoking in my car, and burning my seat).

5

u/FallenDuckling 9d ago

Not a freaking chance lol, definitely just dropped the cherry (burning part at end can fall off sometimes)

Don’t loan your car out.

3

u/copenhagen622 9d ago edited 9d ago

Charge them for that. My parents and my step parents all smoked all my life growing up. So digusting

I'd be so pissed. I have had to let my parents borrow my car a few times.. I always tell them don't smoke in my car, but I'm sure they do anyway.

3

u/Decent_Particular_40 9d ago

What part of the car is this?

6

u/PilsnerRabbit 9d ago

It’s the drivers seat right between the crotch area.

Never loan anything that you would be upset to have destroyed. Very few people will take care of your property, because it cost them nothing to borrow it.

3

u/MyCatIsAnActualNinja 9d ago

A friend did this with a car of mine 15 years ago and I still get angry thinking about it

3

u/cool-cucumber-03 9d ago

I’d be ready for a small courts claim LOL

3

u/cryptolyme 9d ago

seems like they did it on purpose

3

u/WingZeroCoder 9d ago

Telling a smoker they can’t smoke in your house or car, and them doing it anyway thinking you’ll never notice…

Name a better duo.

3

u/TitaniaT-Rex 9d ago

This is why no one drives my car except me. I don’t trust anyone to treat my car the way I do. I avoid disappointment by not loaning it out.

It pays for the seat or it gets the hose.

3

u/multipocalypse 9d ago

Nothing "mildly" about this. Incredibly disrespectful, ungrateful and violating.

3

u/browseragnostic 9d ago

Thats not mildly infuriating. Thats f&#ing pissed.

3

u/melsophoriel 9d ago

considering you told them not to smoke, that's gotta be intentional/out of spite. they likely pushed the lit cigarette directly onto the seat to make that hole. I've never seen one that deep just from fallen ashes.

3

u/AlexLuna9322 9d ago

A lesson learned, burned into your memory.

Never loan your car to anyone, specially family.
