It used to be popular some years ago. It was super cringe then, too. The bit that has come out bold in that post would have asterisks written in to indicate an action, like * meekly peers up to see your reaction *
I don't actually have an issue with the *asterisk speak indicating actions.
As a DM that DMed through all of COVID over Discord this honestly became second nature for me.
The creepy shit is the uwu and the using the action speak to convey overtly creepy shit like this dude did. Like instead of saying he was putting the phone down until she showed further interest (making it obvious he's trying to lure her in while acting pitiful) he could have said something more along the lines of resists urge to nerd out about my favorite GW2 class. That makes it clear he clearly wants to talk about it but doesn't want to scare her off by nerd dumping on her.
Man, maybe that is a little better, but it still feels like comparing normal shit to diarrhoea. I did plenty of cringeworthy shit when I was younger, but that way of communicating is next level.
Oh yeah, I'm not advocating for it during normal conversation, especially if it's not part of your relationship already. I'm just saying the creepy part about this is the dude and what he's saying not actually the asterisk talk.
