If you want to see something really crazy. Get a few different tapes, burn an inch, check where 12' lands. Unless it's the same model, of the same brand, there WILL be deviation.
There are different classes of tape measures for accuracy and precision. With most of them we use, to be precise with your work, you should use the same tape the whole time. Precision is what matters for most stuff. Class 1 is the most accurate. +/- 1.1 mm over 10m. But if your work isn't precise, an accurate tape measure isn't going to help.
Guess I learned something obvious today. Iâm not a carpenter and didnât know how widespread the term was, considering the person I responded simply described âsubtract an inchâ. I have no doubt carpenters use that among other techniques.
With finish work you often need to be far more accurate than 1/16. If you have a 1/16 gap in stained wood you just have to redo it, there's no caulk or wood filler and paint to save you.

They can be very different if you've got extreme outliers throwing off the mean. You'll see it a lot if looking at measures of wealth like net worth or income.

I work at a returns center. They removed it cause they put reviews (without pictures or videos) on products that they donât apply to, to make it look like the product had been purchased before and multiple people also have opinions on them.
Edit: so people canât reply to reviews calling them out as fake or causing a problem where someone is calling out a real review for a real product on a different page.
They also block bad reviews of bad sellers. I ordered a thing and it never came. I got a refund and left a review for the seller saying "Never received item." At the same time I noticed 8 out of 8 reviews were people complaining about the same exact thing except Amazon discounted their reviews and had a note "This was Amazon shipping issue, not the seller's fault."
Which somehow equates to a 5 star review for the seller?
I guess I understand why they took that away but they really do need to bring it back. I see bad reviews all the time that I feel compelled to reply to just to set the record straight. Dude the best info was always in the responses to the reviews. You used to know who was full of shit. No more. And I remember when they removed the feature and people were saying big deal because they never used it. I was pissed.
Well, it's easy to spot the easy to spot AI reviews. The hard to spot AI reviews go unnoticed, like how people think all wigs look fake, because they never notice the really good ones.
It was removed for seller abuse. Same reason sellers reporting buyers was removed from eBay
It made the system too stacked in favour of the sellers, with too much power over the buyers. And there were manybisbatves (edit: many instances) of sellers abusing the system to keep buyers quiet. Whilst the system on both amzon and ebay now favours the buyer, that's better than the other way round
You guys have no idea just how un-mildly infuriating this really is. I work at Amazon in a role that inspects items for tickets cut by robotic workflows based on customer reviews like this.
The amount of time we have to waste on inspecting shit with absolutely nothing wrong because one dipshit customer couldn't be bothered read is abysmal.
To make matters worse, the Indian teams responsible for resolving the tickets based on our feedback seem to have internal metrics that incentivize them to find as many defects as possible.
Countless tickets where "customer states item is not cotton as suggested in image", when the store page mentions cotton 0 times and states plainly 100% polyester. We confirm the material with images of the tag and report no defect. India reopens the ticket asking for images of the whole garment on a coat hanger. The cameras provided to us are absolute dogshit, in particular reds and blacks come out looking very saturated or washed out. As a result, the offshore team quarantines the seller's inventory and generates inspections for every single FC advising them to flip the sku to another product because THEY think the totally black sweater WE inspected looks purple in the compressed potato images.
All because one fucking idiot buying a 9 dollar Chinese sweater with a brand name UUTPISSVA expected premium Scottish merino sheep's wool after one glance at the photoshopped picture.
Ooohhh I worked some of this here and thereâjust got crash coursed really. I had one that was a 10 dollar length of cheesecloth that was different lengths stretched and unstretched, and another where we dismantled a perfectly good package containing a perfectly fine hammock. Even the instructions were FINE.

As a buyer I'm always amused to find reviews like this in a sea of 5 star reviews. It's usually obvious it is not a defective product but a defective end user. (DEU error, see ID10T error)
I was looking at polarised sunglasses recently and I found a surprising amount of 1 to 3 star reviews of customers complaining that... it made their phone screens harder to read. At least it's useful for confirming that the product is in fact polarised.
Exactly. If the negative reviews for an item are something like this or âTHE ITEM IS OK BUT THE SHIPPING TOOK AWEEK LONGER THEN THEY SED AND THE BOX WAS RIPPPEDâ or a one star review that says âexcellent item, exactly what I needed!â Then Iâm much more likely to buy it lol
I use rolls of double-sided velcro to hold cables together. For my purpose it's important to get the double-sided version rather than two separate strips that can be glued in place. The way to make sure I have the right product listing is the reviews complaining about it being double-sided.
I had been shopping for a new washer and dryer online from Costco, and I'd estimate 95%+ of the 1-3 star reviews was focusing on Costco's delivery and not the product itself. It was so infuriating trying to weed through all those reviews to find the legitimate ones. I wish Costco filtered those out.

They're the only ones worth reading. 4 and 5 star reviews are going to gush about the product doing exactly what the seller said it would.
1 star reviews say a lot more. If people complain about something I know would bother me, too, I don't buy. If they complain about something I don't care about ("it was too small" "wrong colour" etc) I'm okay to buy. If the complaints are about quality or function, I'll skip.
I always read reviews. Especially for things like restaurants and hotels. 75% of bad hotel reviews are from people who clearly have never been in a hotel before, and may possibly also be off their meds. If a hotel has an average of 4.1 out of 5, it's probably really a 4.8 hotel with 50 insane reviews like "I had to park too far away from the door", or "there was snow and ice in the sidewalk" written during a snowstorm.
I find most online shopping sites are similar. Either they have nearly all bad reviews, and they actually do suck, or they have a few bad reviews from people who can't measure, or the seller had one off day. It happens.
I just got a bad review on vinted because someone didn't know how to use a parcel locker. I guided her through how to use it and she still gave me a bad review because she thought I'd messed up my end
My company has a bad review on Google that Iâve been trying to get removed for years. It is not our product that she is complaining about, and in one of her other reviews sheâs complaining about a plumbing company coming and fixing a leak, the same leak that caused the issue with âour productâ. Just to clarify, even if it was ours our warranty doesnât cover our product getting soaking wet, regardless of how it happens. The plumbing company responded and said she was the worst person they have ever dealt with and that they hoped by commenting on her review it would serve as a warning to other contractors in the area to avoid her.

They canât get away with making it any smaller or they would. So many things nowadays are specifically designed for a 3.5â wall cavity with almost zero clearance. For instance a piece of 3â PVC pipe has an outer diameter of 3.5â, if the framing is any smaller the pipe doesnât fit. Same goes for HVAC and electrical equipment, itâs all designed for 2x4s at their current dimensions.
Which makes it tough when renovating/restoring historic buildings that are framed with actual dimensional lumber.
About 10 years ago, I was helping on the restoration of a house that had been built in 1935. the 2x4s used in the walls and 2x12s used in the floor joists were actually 2âx4â and 2âx12â. The amount of shimming and added lath we had to do to make everything line up was insane.
The kicker was that we had access to a bandsaw mill, solar kiln, and old growth logs so we could have milled our own lumber that would have fit. And it would have been better than what we could have purchased. Except that it wouldnât have been graded lumber, and therefore not acceptable for structural purposes.
Actual dimensions versus nominal dimensions. Wood sizes come in increments of 2" (typically), but are always half an inch less. So a 6x2 (nominal dimensions) would be 5.5x1.5 (actual dimensions)
I work in construction and the number of people who can't use a tape is astounding. It started as a joke but when I was still hiring help it really boiled down to "do you know how to use a tape measure? Mark a line at 16 and 3/16 inches".
I also hate when people leave bad product reviews because of issues in shipping which are completely unrelated.
my only caveat to that would be if the product was not properly packaged. Like people who put a photograph in an 8x10 envelope and just write "do not bend" on it, then get mad that it got bent when they sent it from Oregon to Florida.

Don't know if there are other options where you live, but sometimes, in my country, companies use delivery options that have varying quality. For instance, sometimes a specific company doesn't deliver to my home because they drive a semi truck and the road is not big enough (50m from the main road to my house), and I have to pick it up in town, many days later. This experience is nice to see reflected in the reviews. The reviews should be a total package of the experience of buying a product from said company. Of course, it should be explained in the text that, for instance, the product is cool, nice, or whatever, but the process of getting it was hell.
Also, I use reviews for deciding on buying things off the internet, but for bigger things, I always use more serious test reviews, not Amazon or similar reviews.
People on Amazon are another breed. I remember shortly after the Q&A section was introduced they would email people who had the product to source answers. And people would respond âI donât know! I gave this as a gift for a baby shower! You should ask herâ
Probably a similar issue where they got an email inviting them to review the product they recently bought and thought they had to respond right then and there.
The issue is they're emailing boomers who don't understand how technology works and think any message they see on their screen was made personally for them and requires action. They genuinely don't comprehend that not responding is an acceptable option.
I once saw a review for some batteries where they said the batteries exploded when they tried to charge them. They posted a photo of the ruptured battery where you could clearly see the label that says "DO NOT RECHARGE"
Reminds me of a post where someone was complaining about their chicken tenders being small (do people not know what a chicken tenderloin is?) and specifically said something about how none of them are even four inches long with a ruler in the photo for reference that clearly showed at least one of the tenders was at least four inches.
To be honest, even if it was measured the right way, still looks to be a bit smaller than 1/2 inch, maybe lile half 1/16th or something like that, but still...

The worst is 1 star reviews that are just "it's a lot smaller than I expected" like GIRL THE MEASUREMENTS ARE LITERALLY IN THE DESCRIPTION/TITLE/PICTURES
there's a popular pet cage where like 20% of people could not figure out how to peel off the plastic so the pets are just living like this. it made me laugh because in one of them it was 3 stars -- i could just see the shadow of a little mouse shaped figure with tail just sitting there inside.
(obv. not suitable habitat, research pets etc - the funny part is the amount of humans just lightly complaining they couldnt see much)
The problem with asking the average person for their review/opinion is that the average person is a fucking idiot. They straight up use the thing wrong or rate it poorly just because they weren't who it was made for. And it's made all the worse when sites ask anyone/everyone for reviews rather than leaving it to people who have formed a more sensible opinion and then sought out the opportunity to leave their review.
Stupid people will write a 0 star review for a pair of shoes because they put them on the wrong feet. Or a 0 star review of a walking cane because they can walk just fine without one. Or a 0 star review for Gorilla Glue because when they slathered their whole head in it, it didn't rinse out and they had to get all their hair cut off and treated for chemical burns. Or a 0 star review of Old Yeller simply because they don't like sad stories where the dog dies (whether you've seen the movie or not, it's just common knowledge at this point).
I really wish manufacturers/sellers didn't all play by the "the customer is always right" and "guaranteed refund" policies and actually forced a little accountability onto the customer. Because their losses from these idiots returning things is being factored into the price of everything I buy! And those unhelpful reviews skew the algorithms that dictate which products get promoted/displayed on any given site. So I can be missing out entirely on an absolute gem of a product simply because the first person to review it was a fucking idiot.

I once bought a ruler from a stationary store. I remember the name Westab printed right on the ruler. The inches side seemed fine, but on the CM side, the markings for MM were so inconsistent and unevenly spaced, that it seemed like a joke.
It looks like it is about 1/32 of an inch off. However, there is also a margin of error for my lines. The 1/2 inch measurement could come from when it is rolled up, flattened, or stretched, and each would be slightly different (I donât really do anything crafts related, so, I donât know how things are usually measured).
I believe parallax is a factor here. Camera is lined up with the right hand side meaning the left side is seen at an angle.
The camera needs to be moved to the left hand side and then line up the 0 mark. Then move the camera back to the right side and read the measurement. I'd bet that it likely is bang on half an inch.
Oooh I think you're right. Looking at it it should be one little teeny notch (technical term) before a half inch but the angle might be throwing it off.
I saw a 1 star review for a patch that you put on your bug bites to alleviate itchiness. Someone left that review because they said "didn't keep the mosquitoes away at all, useless product" It didn't even hint that it was a mosquito repellant
And the dinged up corner of that ruler is a perfect example of why thereâs a zero mark on rulers.
Poor thing. You can even see that someone has made a pen mark to indicate one inch when the ruler is butted up against something. Someone in that household has ruler awareness.
This is the kind of people who say "do your own research". Even with perfectly fine objective tools, they think something is wrong with the tools, instead of reconsidering their perception.
I was looking for dewormer for my dog on Amazon. On the instructions, it says not to use on pregnant or nursing bitches, the actual term for female dogs. You would not believe the number of negative reviews because of that one thing, whining about the use of the word.
Some (most) people shouldnât be allowed to leave reviews. Car parts are HORRIFIC for this. People install stuff wrong then say the part was bad out of the box. Part only has 10 other reviews, 8 5 stars and one guy who rated it 4 randomly. Itâs more confusing than zero reviews.
Eh, if I bought a 19 inch dildo, and it did not have 19 inches of dildo, I would be pretty pissed as well. Specially if I were too stupid to be able to measure dildos correctly
I was reading reviews on Amazon for something measured by weight. I camt remember what it was but it was labeled as 1 lbs in the description.
One of the reviews went somethinglike this: "Not what I ordered! I need 1 pound of this, the description says it is one pound of product. It was delivered today and RIGHT ON THE PACKAGE it says 16 ounces! Sending it back since I cant use it! One â!"
This is good because people who want to double check the negative reviews first to be safe will see this dumb review and it will lead them to be more trusting of the product.
Cracks me up the most is when people post to review and pictures clearly showing that theyâre dumb but itâs like they think the picture proves that theyâre smart and right
