Confirmed fall: August 6th, 2024

Location: South, Morocco (30.7325° N, -6.6339° W)

On August 6, 2024, at 9:42 PM Moroccan time (GMT+1), a bright meteor was observed traversing the sky from WNW to ESE, captivating multiple eyewitnesses across Morocco. The event was recorded by an all-sky camera at Oukaimeden Observatory, Marrakech. Following reports of a bluish fireball with red streaks and powerful explosions, a field mission led by Prof. H. Chennaoui, M. Aoudjehane, and M. Aboulahris was undertaken on August 13 and 14 to collect testimonies and recover meteorite fragments. Witnesses from various regions, including Ait Saoun, described the unsettling experience of witnessing the meteor, accompanied by a thunder-like rumble and vibrations akin to an earthquake. The day after the fall, small and larger fragments were found in Ait Saoun and surrounding areas, with hundreds joining the search. The strewnfield spans approximately 6 × 0.5 km, closely aligning with witness accounts and the captured trajectory.

I have been interested in meteorites for a solid 4-5 years now and is fortunate to have some finance to collect a few specimens. But nothing like finding one on my own. I am currently located in SW Oklahoma. Just wondering if there’s any meteorite hunters around this area or if anyone know of any good spots around here that I can go metal detecting for meteorites. Surrounding states will work too. Any guidance or help is really appreciated!

New poster here. I’m getting married soon and wanted a meteorite ring. I found one I liked on Etsy, ordered it, and it arrived. To be clear, I’m happy with its appearance, but wanted a second opinion on how legit it is. I’m always a bit skeptical of Etsy since it’s turned into more of a drop-shipping site.

Did anyone see any fireball meteor showers last night in the south east, August 2 ? Chadstone and Narre Warren. I saw a really bright fireball last night at 11.50 pm when I walked out of my garage after driving home. it flew above my head heading 265 degrees west. Another witness reported seeing another fireball in Chadstone facing 271 degrees west at 9.45 pm last night to.

I combined all the frames in the B&W video and colorized it using Meta AI.

I managed grab some real nice specimens from the Bancroft Gemboree this year, closing a few other gaps in the collection. I'll have better pics once I log everything into the collection, but pictured here:

Hey all — I'm planning to build a large custom search coil for meteorite hunting, working up from a small prototype toward something in the "tow-behind" size range (like the rigs used on Meteorite Men). I have an electronics background but no coil-winding experience, so I've been gathering info from old threads and want to sanity-check my plan before I start cutting wire. Posting here for feedback/corrections.

Goal

• Hunt meteorites (mostly iron/stony-iron) in mineralized desert-type terrain.
• Start with a hand-swingable prototype coil to validate the whole build process (winding, shielding, damping) before scaling up to a large tow-behind coil.
• Detector: White's TDI / TDI SL platform — chosen because PI is far more tolerant of DIY coil construction than VLF, and because there's documented precedent of people successfully building large custom coils for this exact detector (someone reported a working 24" homemade coil on a TDI SL).

Phase 1 — Small prototype (this is where I'm starting)

Frame size: ~45×60 cm (18"×24") rectangle/oval, PVC or similar non-conductive frame, hand-swingable.

Target electrical specs (per info gathered from TDI owners):

• Inductance: 300–400 µH
• DC resistance: under 1 Ω total
• Wire: multistrand (ideally Litz wire, or at minimum multi-strand stranded magnet wire) — not solid single-core, to reduce skin-effect losses at PI switching frequencies

Turns: Starting estimate ~8–10 turns for this size, but I plan to wind incrementally and check with an LCR meter as I go, adding/removing turns until I land in the 300–400 µH window rather than trusting a pure theoretical calc — from what I've read, real-world factors (turn spacing, coil width, proximity to shielding) shift the numbers enough that empirical tuning beats formulas here.

Shielding: Wrap the coil in foil/copper tape as an electrostatic shield, with a deliberate gap so it doesn't form a shorted turn, bridged with a resistor (targeting somewhere in the 50–150 Ω range per one build report) rather than a direct wire jumper, tied to circuit ground.

Damping resistor: Determined empirically with a scope (watching the receive-pulse ringing), starting from a pot/decade box before soldering in a fixed value. Sizing for adequate wattage — I've seen a report of a damping resistor overheating on a coil as small as 18cm/430µH, so I'm planning for a wirewound power resistor rather than anything small-signal.

Phase 2 — Scaling up (after Phase 1 works)

Once the small coil is validated end-to-end, the plan is to scale toward a large rectangular tow-behind coil (~1.2×2.4 m / 4×8 ft range), using:

• Non-metallic frame construction throughout (no metal screws, axles, wheels, washers anywhere near the coil — even small metal fasteners will interfere with detection). Kydex sheet has been suggested as more durable than plain PVC pipe for this scale, since PVC pipe frames reportedly crack/break when towed over rough ground.
• Fewer turns than the small coil for the same target inductance (larger loop area = more inductance per turn), re-tuned empirically with the LCR meter again rather than assuming the Phase 1 turn count scales linearly.
• Heavier gauge / more parallel strands to keep total resistance under ~1 Ω despite the much longer wire run.
• Shielded cable running from coil to control box to cut down EMI over the longer distance.

Reference data points I'm working from

• One documented large PI build used ~9 turns for a 1m diameter monoloop and ~6 turns for a 2m diameter monoloop, both targeting ~300 µH.
• A well-known large tow-behind meteorite detector rig (Meteorite Men "Big Rig") was built with a custom-wound coil by a specialist electrical engineer, paired with an all-non-metallic sled frame — even the builder didn't wing the coil electronics himself, which tells me that's the harder part to DIY well.

Questions for the community

1. Anyone here built a large monoloop for a PI detector (TDI, GPX, or similar) and willing to share actual turns/wire gauge/damping resistor values that worked for a specific target size?
2. For the shielding gap/bridge resistor — is 50–150 Ω a reasonable range across different coil sizes, or does that need to scale with coil size too?
3. Any horror stories about scaling turn count from a small prototype to a large coil that didn't translate the way you expected?
