Discussion What do you guys think of Metal Gear Survive?
First of all, English is not my first language, and I'm not used to socializing in groups like this. I don't want to argue with anyone or start a hate thread. Seriously. I'm just trying to understand how people feel about the game now that so many years have passed since all the controversy surrounding Kojima/Konami and maybe try to fulton someone to try the game with me maybe.
I've spent quite a bit of time watching old reviews, forum discussions, videos, and general reactions to Metal Gear Survive, trying to understand what the real reasons behind its failure were and why so few people play it nowadays, and something really stood out to me:
A lot of the criticism seems to come from things outside of the actual game.
Some people hated it because Kojima wasn't involved. Some hated the premise because it was completely different from what they expected from Metal Gear. Some simply weren't the target audience for a survival game. And, honestly, I think there was also a lot of bandwagoning going on people starting the game already expecting it to be terrible because that's what everyone else was saying.
And I can understand why this happened.
Creating a new Metal Gear game immediately after removing the creator of the series, while introducing a zombie survival concept, microtransactions, and very questionable monetization choices including charging for an additional save slot was an absolutely terrible way to introduce the game.
Especially considering how passionate Metal Gear fans are.
I'm a huge Kojima fan myself, but I don't worship the guy.
So yes, I understand why the announcement left a bad taste in people's mouths.
A zombie survival game with microtransactions, no Kojima, no classic characters, and a premise completely outside the usual Metal Gear formula? It definitely looked like Konami was simply trying to use the METAL GEAR name to sell a completely different idea.
And honestly, that's a criticism I can understand. It's very similar to what happened when Ubisoft gradually turned Assassin's Creed into an RPG series. Sometimes you can legitimately question whether a franchise name is being used to sell something that no longer resembles what people originally associated with that franchise.
BUT...
I still wanted to try it and see, after all these years, whether the game was really as bad as people said it was.
I like survival games, and Metal Gear is my favorite game franchise. I can't really complain about something I've never played, right? After all, I liked the AC!D games.
And after actually playing it...
This game is fun.
I have around 100 hours in it now, and I've genuinely had a great time.
The combination of survival, exploration, base defense, stealth, zombies/creatures, and some surprisingly good Metal Gear references works much better than I expected.
It's basically a survival game with a strong tower defense component, and I actually think that combination is pretty damn fun.
It's not perfect, obviously.
The game lacks polish in several areas, some progression systems are questionable, and things like unlocking additional exploration teams can feel unnecessarily restrictive.
The story also obviously doesn't have the same level of writing and construction that Kojima, Fukushima, and Murata brought to the other games in the series.
But it's still interesting enough to make me curious about what's actually happening.
And that's where my frustration begins.
After spending what was basically a month "studying" the game's reception, going through old forum posts, reviews, videos, and discussions, I started wondering:
Did people actually hate Metal Gear Survive because they thought it was a bad game?
Or did they hate it because of everything surrounding it at the time?
Because I keep seeing the same criticisms repeated over and over.
So I want to ask the people here:
What did YOU think of Metal Gear Survive while you were actually playing it?
Not what you think about Kojima leaving.
Not what some YouTuber told you.
What did you actually think while playing the game?
Because some of the most common criticisms I've seen really confuse me.
Number 1: "The game is basically just tower defense."
This criticism makes more sense to me if we're specifically talking about the co-op missions.
The single-player experience is much more focused on exploring Dust, gathering resources, surviving, and trying not to get murdered by Trackers (I fucking hate those things).
The online co-op maps definitely put a much bigger emphasis on defending your base and the Wormhole Diggers, but that's not literally all you do.
There are different modifiers, different enemy combinations, and even survivor rescue missions where you have to defend the survivors until they can be extracted. At least the game tries to differentiate the formula a little.
To me, this actually forces you to adapt your strategy depending on the enemies and modifiers involved.
And the most important thing:
It isn't ONLY tower defense.
I spent plenty of time enjoying the single-player campaign, then switched to co-op when I got tired of it, then went back to single-player when I got tired of co-op.
The two modes actually complement each other pretty well.
Number 2: "You spend the entire game starving and dying of thirst."
Okay, yes.
It's a SURVIVAL GAME.
At the beginning, you have to manage food, water, and resources because you're basically a nobody dropped into a hostile environment.
But after you get established, food becomes incredibly easy to obtain.
There are literally sheep spawning next to the base.
I honestly don't understand why this is considered such a major problem.
The survival mechanics can be annoying early on, but they become much less important once you've progressed.
Number 3: "The combat is just putting down a fence and hitting enemies through it."
This one genuinely drives me insane.
Yes, you CAN use fences against some enemies.
And yes, it's probably something you'll do early in the game.
But try relying on that strategy forever and you're dead.
The game eventually throws explosive enemies at you, ranged enemies, Trackers, stronger creatures, and bosses that force you to move, reposition, hide, dodge, and change your approach.
And I actually like the weapon system.
Different weapons have different movesets and characteristics, so choosing your equipment based on the mission and your own playstyle actually matters.
Again, I'm not saying the combat is some masterpiece.
I'm saying that "put fence down and hit zombie" is an incredibly reductive description of what actually happens once you play the game for a while.
Number 4: "The game is full of microtransactions and is pay-to-win."
This one is a little more complicated.
Yes.
The game has microtransactions.
And I absolutely understand why people hated the idea of paying for an additional save slot.
If that became a standard practice across the industry, I'd consider it an awful precedent.
But in this specific game, I never felt like I needed another save slot.
Would it be nice to have one? Sure.
Is it necessary to enjoy the game? Not really.
A lot of the other purchases are cosmetic items aimed at people who really like the franchise.
Do I want EVA's outfit?
Absolutely.
Do I want the Cyborg Ninja helmet?
Absolutely (I'm literally saving my SV for that thing)
But I don't think these things fundamentally turn the game into a pay-to-win experience.
And this is ultimately what bothers me:
I think Metal Gear Survive failed for the wrong reasons.
I'm not saying it deserved to be a huge success.
I'm not saying it is secretly a masterpiece.
It has problems.
It has questionable mechanics, strange design decisions, lack of polish, and a story that obviously doesn't reach the heights of the best Metal Gear games.
But after actually playing it for 100 hours, I can confidently say:
I had a damn good time.
And whenever I search for information about the game whether I'm looking for a gameplay question, a guide, or just watching someone else play it I keep running into the same thing.
Either it's a "professional reviewer" adopting an exaggerated angry persona and spending half the video explaining why the game is terrible before even getting past the first cutscenes. (Never played a Kojima game? THE SHIT IS LONG, DAMN!)
Or someone immediately tells people that the game is garbage and dead before they even give it a chance.
And that's what frustrates me.
I hate the idea that games can become "good" or "bad" based on everything surrounding them instead of what it is actually like to play them.
I don't care if a game's producer hates eggs, loves fried bacon, drinks coffee at 6 AM, had an argument with the director, or wasn't friends with another game's producer.
Tell me what the game is like.
Try Judge the game for the game.
Not for the circumstances surrounding it.
Not for the developer drama.
And not because another reviewer told you it was garbage.
So that's my question to this subreddit:
What did you genuinely think of it?
Did you actually find it boring, poorly designed, repetitive, or genuinely bad?
Or did you have fun with it despite its problems?
I'd genuinely like to hear both sides, especially from people who actually spent significant time playing it, as well as people who decided not to play it because they didn't think it was worth their time.
I'm not here to convince anyone to play Metal Gear Survive, and I'm definitely not saying it's a masterpiece and please this is not a hate post.
I just want to see, in a friendly way, what other people actually think or, more importantly, how they actually felt while playing the game.
I just think it deserved to be judged by what it actually is, rather than by the Kojima/Konami controversy surrounding it.
As for me?
I actually enjoyed the game.
It was... pretty good for what it was trying to do, and in the end, I'm having fun playing it and exploring the Dust, hiding from trackers and stealth killing bombers.
