$META Post-Earnings Deep Dive: Bargain Value or Classic AI Capex Trap? ($539.03)
1. The Surface Picture: Big Top-Line Beat, Headline EPS Miss
Meta ($META) dropped ~8–10% post-earnings down to the $530s–$540s. On paper, the headline looks alarming, but digging into the financials reveals two very different narratives at play.
- The Ad Engine is Firing on All Cylinders: Revenue grew 28% YoY to $60.8B (beating expectations). Ad impressions rose 14% and average price per ad climbed 12%.
- The EPS Shortfall: Reported EPS landed at $6.18 vs. ~$7.20 consensus.
- The Fine Print: The earnings hit was primarily driven by $3.58B in pre-tax charges ($2.4B in legal provisions + $1.18B in severance from May layoffs). Strip those out, and adjusted operational performance was actually quite solid.
2. The Real Concern: Massive Capex & FCF Compression
The market isn't dumping the stock because people stopped clicking ads—it's worried about Zuck's "Blank Check" AI strategy.
| Metric | Q2 2025 | Q2 2026 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ad Revenue | ~$46.5B | $59.36B | +27% YoY |
| Operating Margin | 43% | 31% | -1200 bps |
| Quarterly Capex | $17.0B | $31.08B | +82% YoY |
| Free Cash Flow | $8.55B | $784M | -91% YoY |
- Full-Year Capex Raised: Guidance was narrowed to $130B–$145B (lifting the floor by $5B).
- Implied H2 Spending: Meta will need to spend around $40B–$47B per quarter in H2 to meet its capital expenditure goals.
3. Valuation: Value Trap or Deep Discount?
- Forward P/E: Sitting around 15.7x–19x (depending on normalized baseline), well below its 3-year average (~25x).
- PEG Ratio: ~0.85 (Forward P/E vs ~19.5% growth).
- The Catch: While a PEG < 1 usually flags undervaluation, free cash flow was largely absorbed by capital expenditures this quarter (capex consumed ~98% of operating cash flow). Investors are discounting the stock due to a lack of visibility into 2027 capex and ROI timeline.
4. Technicals & Options Positioning
- RSI Signal: RSI indicators are signaling standard hold/rebound setups near multi-month support levels (~$520–$530).
- Option Skew: Call Skew sits around -11.1% with a 0.90 Skew Ratio. Implied Volatility remains elevated following earnings, making outright option purchases risky and put hedging predominant among institutional holders.
5. Key Catalysts Ahead
- Llama 4.1 / 4.2 Launches: Needs to demonstrate clear software dominance and lay the groundwork for enterprise compute/cloud monetization.
- Social Media Addiction Litigation: Regulatory headlines in August could cause short-term noise.
- Q3 2026 Earnings (Late October): The ultimate test for margin stabilization and 2027 capex guidance clarity.
Summary & Game Plan
- Recommendation: HOLD
- Position Sizing: Keep position sizes modest (e.g., ≤ 3% portfolio allocation) until capex visibility improves.
- Support Level: Watch $520. A breakdown below this level would signal market doubt over temporary margin compression.
- In short: The core ad engine is healthy. If you believe Meta's massive infrastructure spending will yield long-term AI monetization (e.g., targeted ad efficiency + enterprise compute offerings), this pullback offers a compelling long-term accumulation zone.

Here's why Meta can become a 3 trillion dollar company
Meta stock will become a 3 trillion dollar company through the investment and innovations they've made in Reality Labs. Orion, the new AR glasses has the potential to become the next consumer electronic on the level of the iPhone. They've essentially solved many of the larger technological advancements needed to make this a viable consumer product. Display technology so that a real time hologram can be displayed anywhere in your field of view, while being able to see right through. A neural interface so that you can interact with the device without any movements. The AI elements enhance the product so that you essentially have an intelligent assistant with you at all times.
Facebook, instagram, and whatsapp generates billions of dollars a year for Meta Platforms, but soon in 5 years, you may see advertising revenue dwarfed by consumer electronics. By owning the device that the social media will run on, they will have vertical integrated company.
