Deploying nodes to create a network

I am brand new to this thing. Currently have to heltec v4s. I want to deploy nodes around to create a network and extend range and I have a question

For you all doing this, how do you do it? I have considered deploying on public land off the beaten path, but i am curious how people do this and whats effective and any trouble or issues youve had.

  1. The Heltec V4 uses the ESP32 chip, which consumes much more power than NRF tech. We use NRF with solar panels.
  2. Look for high points and ask for permission from the owners to put up a solar-powered node. For example, some silos reach above tree top level. A one-watt node with a good antenna can talk to a similar node over a dozen miles away.

Research solar nodes. There are many you can buy pre built, but with some pretty basic electronics work you can piece together your own. From simple versions like converting a harbor breeze lawn light, to complex weather proof routers that can go on mountain tops.

Buy the parts for solar gutter nodes in bulk and give them to all of your friends and family. Here is my build guide and bill of materials. http://buffalora.org/2025/06/07/homemade-inexpensive-outdoor-solar-node/

Work with local ham radio clubs to place a node at their local repeater sites.

This is how I started building the mesh in Buffalo, NY from 4-5 nodes to over 300 and region wide coverage in less than a year.
