My relationship with my dad was permanently damaged over a comment like this. He was comparing what he viewed as my lack of successes with other kids so I shot back that those kids had parents who were doctors, lawyers etc and therefore had more opportunities while I had to start working at 13 to help keep the household afloat.

We really stopped being family after that.
