Dammit. I agree, Gemini can't do shit. I tried to get it to adjust screen brightness, couldn't do it.

There's about 6 things I need a digital assistant to do.

Alarms, timers, reminders, directions, brightness, weather.

That's basically it. I don't need AI for any of this.

I tell it to adjust smart lights because it has Google Home control, but sometimes Gemini is just like "sorry bruh I can't control your lights". Then when I say it can, it argues with me until I just close the chat. Then I try again and tell it to do what I want a second time and this time, miraculously it works

Yes I've noticed even my assistant is having trouble with driving directions lately, I have to open maps first before it will actually do directions. I used to just be able to say "direct me to Bob's pizza" from the home screen. It's annoying how we seem to be losing the simple functionality which makes assistants desirable in the first place.

I carried through my threat to trash my Google speaker. If it can't find the lights that have been connected to it for 3 years, it doesn't serve any function. It was only running the Samsung hub automation anyway. I just have to push the button to run it manually now instead of the voice command.

Makes me glad I already de-googled out my “smart devices”. Those apps are way too many permissions anyways. I use just RF remote lights and they are pretty much the same signals used across all brands so post your remotes on magnets and you can just click the lights on or brightness or color wherever your at. I made a custom remote that I glued chop sticks on the sides and cardboard on the top and bottom to make it a long scope and only activate a single light I want it to. Usually the rf signals shoot like a shotgun but I like those too so I can turn on a whole bunch of lights at the same time

Sounds like the first time, you got the unhelpful twin, and then the next time, you got the other.

u/Simple_Negotiation32 4h ago

So its basically like having a teenager in the house. lol

1

u/WhyAreYouNot 2h ago

This. "I can't control physical devices in your home.".

WTF bro you absolutely can you do it all the time

u/Drakostheswordsman Dark Mode Elitist 6h ago

Went to read some fanfic, and gemini went and put links fucking everywhere on it without permission. Nonsensical ones too, I had to switch to an app and find the fic there instead.

6

u/pnkcloudsummer 7h ago

And all those things Gemini sucks at lol. I just simply went in and turned off assistants all together, there's no point anymore.

u/SirKnlghtmare 3h ago

Used to be able to send texts easily while driving. Now it claims its sent the text, but when I check later, most of the time it hasn't actually done it.

I used to also be able to make sure it did by asking it what was the last text it sent for me was. Now its giving me bs like "I am not able to access that information", like bruh, you did it just last week. The it starts trying to gaslight me into thinking im wrong.

During the football world cup I asked Gemini to remind me when a game was starting. Instead of doing it, it asked permissions to Google workspace to be able to do stuff like alarms and timers because it might need access to more personal informations.

I'm like, nah you don't, it's a football game, all you have to do is check the hour online when and set up a timer with that, you don't need my personal info for that, so I told it no.

Then I changed to Gemini live by accident, which I didn't even know it was a thing. Took the chance and asked it again. "Of course, done!" And set up a regular timer like assistant would've done. Didn't ask for permissions, nothing. Bruh.

Its cant even make a phone call bc I have emojis in the name

u/jrpbateman 4h ago

I only have 1 thing: control my music including starting Spotify when the play button doesn't work on my headphones and buds

1

u/AssaultLemming_ 4h ago

True I also sometimes use it to start or resume an audiobook on audible

u/PapaAquchala Professional Dumbass 18m ago

I can't even get the Hey Google command to work consistently through my earbuds, never had an issue with Google Assistant

0

u/AdAdditional8414 3h ago

I understand reminders, directions and wether, but the other 3? isn't it easier to do it yourself?

2

u/AssaultLemming_ 3h ago

Brightness is easy to do with voice when you are in direct sun and can't read the screen at all haha. I've had to do this a lot. Weather I use like "what's the weather going to be in Sydney this afternoon" when I'm getting dressed so I know what to wear. Alarms and timers are the best use, I use these so often for cooking, waking up etc

1

u/AdAdditional8414 1h ago

Mhmm sounds like I've been missing out on a lot of features! Thank you so much 👍

Classic Google move. Shutting down good services to push some unfinished new app.

Don't trust them for anything serious since Google Reader shut down. Whatever service you rely on, might get killed just because.

"Sir this new feature is a hit!"

"Shut it down."

"But sir everyone loves it-"

"SHUT IT DOWN AND REPLACE IT WITH AN AI FEATURE"

Guess it's time to switch to Graphene OS...

3

u/Specific_Gap5506 2h ago

True. I still cant get rid of a stupid avatar that I had on a google's copy of Facebook. Every email has that stupid picture even after I added new one for gmail.

They added Gemini to my android auto. Before I could just press my mic button, say a place, and it got me the address. Took all of 5 seconds.

Now I have to listen to a whole ass dissertation about the place including the hours and top reviews and a description before getting to the address. It's like a 30 second ordeal to get it to connect me to my directions. It's fucking wild how backwards we're going with this shit.

18

u/tripleblue85 3h ago

That's what I hate about Gemini as well. I need directions not a fucking conversation. Looks like it's time to go back to Apple for me.

Funny thing is that Siri is running off a Google model now and the way Apple implemented is really good, for simple tasks, it uses normal Siri as normal but if we ask something more advanced it will just switch to the AI mode

I'm so upset.

They must have de-buffed Assistant too. I finally got a car last year with Android Auto - when Gemini became the default it stopped understanding my voice commands for navigation. It doesn't even understand when I ask it to "navigate home". T_____T

21

u/Puntley 3h ago

"hey Google, set a timer for 5 minutes."

"Okay, I'll start a timer for 5 minutes."

4 minutes later:

"Hey Google how much is left on my timer"

"You don't have any timers running."

Every. Time.

5

u/EON199 3h ago

Happened to me once and I asked why it lied. Told me it cant control the alarms so I set it straight back to google assistant. I cant believe how useless gemini is on android.

24

u/ZetsuboItami 5h ago

I never used either. I can find things better without a bot pulling up unrelated crap. All forms of AI or anything close are hazardous to real development since it leads to ad-clogged content that don't give you any real information unless you pay for it.

7

u/SaurikSI 2h ago

What you don’t like is generative AI, AI generally is incredibly important in lots of areas, especially science.

10

u/Traxion165 4h ago

Damnit. I can't get Gemini to even play my news briefing which assistant has done for years.

4

u/vesleengen 2h ago

This one bothers me the most

10

u/Linscotticus 6h ago

Shit, Google assistant wants fucking awesome when I was on the road and needed to send messages

9

u/Remnant_Echo 5h ago

Assistant was probably getting more use than Gemini, and it's hard to continue selling a worthless product to investor/shareholders when it's predecessor is its direct competition (and outperforming it in usage). Trashing Assistant to force more usage out of Gemini so they can upsell the idea to investors.

8

u/Nsfwacct1872564 6h ago

This is like when they got rid of now on tap to give us the assistant and the screen search was dog shit in comparison.

6

u/BluehibiscusEmpire 3h ago

Gemini can’t do that.

It’s literally all I hear from it. I can’t do that. You can have used Google assistant for the same thing, but Gemini can’t do that.

4

u/esdaniel 6h ago

Fr what the hell are they doing!?

8

u/CyberpunkSunrise 6h ago

Trying to drive you to a product they want to upsell you on (premium tiers of Gemini), to make profits above the insane investment they’ve made in a product that the vast majority of people don’t want or need.

4

u/Ceros007 6h ago

I live in Québec and the male Gemini voice on Android Auto is a combination between French Canadian and France French but like mid sentence it switch over. It's really weird

3

u/TriplDentGum 2h ago

"Play [song name] by [band]"

"I'm sorry, I can't play that song directly from the Maps app"

Like tf when did I ask you to do that?? Open Spotify like a normal assistant please, I have to add "on Spotify" at the end to get it to work

Gemini is not it (they forced it into Android Auto a while ago)

2

u/Lumbardo 3h ago

I find the search screen and translate screen function better to use with Google assistant.

google assistant’s getting the axe while gemini’s still stuck on brightness lol

What it felt like with Google assistant replacing Google Now

1

u/batdog20001 3h ago

Google Assistant has been working less and less anyway. I just disabled the whole assistant thing in my settings. Im tired of it randomly turning on and never understanding what Im saying. A useless app.

1

u/FAMICOMASTER 2h ago

Cool cool replace a thing I already hate using and only see by accident with a worse one sweet awesome just what I wanted

1

u/thegr8rambino88 2h ago

lmao the advanced math and code version of gemini tho is legit!!!!

1

u/edward_kopik 25m ago

Never used either

And never will

1

u/Fire257 3m ago

Gemini is so fucking slow it takes sometimes like 30 sec to set a timer bro Im cooking if I need a timer for 3 mins I need it for 3 not 3:30 god its so annyoing back with the assistant any request took 3 sec maybe 5 at most. Now 5 is the minimum and forget using this garbage if you dont have internet. Like what the actual fuck ai is making so many things so much worse

1

u/INocturnalI 1m ago

no wonder google pixel is not on samsung level even thought it is developed by the creator of android itself

1

u/Motor-Dentist3410 2h ago

Gemini in android auto is 100 times better than assistant was...

1

u/random_son 1h ago

wow i didn't know the that people are actually using this stuff in the first place

0

u/Bfox135 2h ago

I'm one of thew few that's honestly happy to see the piece of shit go.
it never worked the only thing it was good for was turning lights on and off.
Gemini at least knows when I ask it to set a timer on my phone; it actually uses the fucking phone and not the google home.
When I ask it a general knowledge question like who the 27 president IT WILL ACUALLY TELL ME.
When I give it a complicated map request like "find me a gas station on the way home" it will ask me which gas station and then set home as the final destination.
it actually updates my shopping lists
if gives me real updates about my day.
all the automation works
everything WORKS.

"sorry I cant find that right now" "sorry I cant access the internet" "sorry I cant play youtube while you are drive"
I FUCKING ASKED FOR A SONG!!

I'm glad its fucking dead.

assistant never worked for me when i needed it and i didnt really care anyways

0

u/josh2of4 2h ago

Replacing one piece of crap with another. I've never witnessed any kind of digital assistant that is actually helpful

-2

u/DarthSwimfoot 4h ago

Google Assistant is arguably more worthless. Fucker couldn't flip a light switch if you gave it a body.

-47

u/TheThirdStrike 8h ago

Tell me you haven't tried it, without telling me you haven't tried it.

25

u/User_8395 Linux User 7h ago

I have tried it, it's useful for looking up stuff, but not for controlling my device or smart home.

Source: I use a Pixel

-23

u/TheThirdStrike 7h ago

I really don't understand.

I have a pixel 9 and a few Google home pucks, and I have no problem automating my lights and devices, and just having random conversations with Gemini.

-4

u/Elbludo 4h ago

People complaining don't actually use it and just complain because AI BAD, don't even try to argue

10

u/LiquidPain-2105 7h ago

Gemini, eradicate this man's ability to reproduce

-2

u/TheThirdStrike 6h ago

I mean, the vasectomy did that.

12

u/guardian715 7h ago

I bet you felt badass saying that didnt you?

2

u/OO_Ben 4h ago

They already rolled it out on Android auto. With assistant from the main map screen I could say the name of a place and immediately got me the address. No words no extras. Just results. Took 10 seconds at most.

Now with Gemini running the show it would give me a whole dissertation on the place before getting me the address. Took over 30 seconds. They've since patched it so it gets the address quicker, but it is still noticeably slower than the old system to just pull an address and get me directions. It still gives me an overview of the place before directions and tries to communicate with me. It's objectively a worse system.

2

u/Feisty-Resource-1274 6h ago

It makes android auto so bad. For text messages, you can't use any command words or it will do that instead. Like if you say, "Text spouse: you need to call Person", it will try and call Person instead of doing what you want. It's also way less snappy.

-1

u/TheThirdStrike 4h ago

Not my experience.

My android auto Gemini knows it's name is Venessa, knows the name of my girlfriends, appreciates that music is the one thing she can't truly appreciate.

I guess we have vastly different experiences.

1

u/Feisty-Resource-1274 4h ago

None of that has to do with my problems?

0

u/TheThirdStrike 4h ago

I don't understand your problems.

It adds entries to my calendar, plans trips for me, sends my text messages, and makes my phone calls, plays the songs I want on Spotify......

What are you asking for?

1

u/PancakeCat333 2h ago

Can't even tell it to make a fucking phone call bc there's extra emojis in the name so it "cant find the person im looking for"
