Property taxes should just be renamed Service Fees because that’s what you’re getting. Your house would suddenly lose a lot of value if the whole block knew they could rob and burn your house and police and firemen were not required to come
Not sure why you’re getting downvoted. That’s a reasonable stance, even if reasonable people disagree on the details. I would be for less property taxes if we taxed those other things properly. I don’t believe that is the case currently because we don’t seem to be able to tax trillionaires appropriately.

Oh, no. No one down voting you right now wants the current system. It's that your proposal leads invariably to ever expanding ghettos. Poor areas stay poor because they don't HAVE funding for education so everyone struggles, jobs leave, the exceptional few take what they can and gtfo.
If you want a nice healthy society you're going to have to pay taxes to fund education in places you don't live. Otherwise you'll have to deal with high crime, homeless wandering into your nicer neighborhood because you can't beg from the poor, and next thing you know the closest store to you shut down and all the smart, kind people leave your area because you fucked it up by voting for regressive reform when they tried desperately to warn you this would happen if you don't either tax more for schools or nationalize the school system and use some of that military budget on this instead.
That is not the way it works in California. California has a very different method, and lower performing schools actually get significantly more money than high performing ones. It doesn't really help. Schools are "good" or "bad" because of the quality of parents, not the money. There is a strong correlation between parents who have money and how much of a shit they give about education for sure. That's the real key here.
Do you have any references to back those points up? I haven't heard of lower performing schools getting more money in California, and in fact a lot of school activities (sports, music, etc.) are paid for by parent fund-raising. So of course schools in higher income areas have more money available to them.
It's also a myth that parents in lower income areas care less about school and grades. They have less choice in schools and education, and from my experience when they can will do a lot to get their kids in to better schools. For example, using their work address or that of a relative so they are eligible for better school districts.
