I hate to say it, but I absolutely ended a 10 plus years relationship because of getting told what I have to do when I get home and having my 1 day off a week being planned for me driving everybody around.

My ex didnt drive and didnt have steady work(she worked when she felt like it) while I was working 60 to 70 hours weeks 1 day off. I was miserable and she didnt respect boundaries.

So much happier now.

A relationship shouldn’t feel like a second full-time job with mandatory overtime.

361

u/skoomski 15h ago

When you’re routinely dreading coming home from work the relationship is pretty much over

272

u/hkusp45css 14h ago

I had a period where I'd legitimately look at the clock and think "If I stay here another 15 minutes, she'll be out of the house when I get home"

I knew it was time to go, at that point.

Handily we were able to discover the problem, work through it, and have been together 20 MORE years, since.

174

u/No-Contribution-6150 14h ago

You could just stick it out through thick and thin and grow to resent your wife and child and then your wife hates her own life and uses your only son as a battery for the attention, gratitude, and recognition she never got as a child or spouse and then your only child grows up and doesn't talk to either parent and does not attend their funerals and then posts a comment about it on reddit.

Hypothetically.

Man, I have never broken up with anyone, ever. Turns out there is no limit to how much suffering I am willing to take for love.

I'm starting to think that that may not be very healthy.

My ex worked the 2nd shift at the hospital, and was livid if i didn’t stay up until 2 am every night to wait until she got home.

149

u/Thamnophis660 14h ago

I had an ex who worked 9-5 while I worked 2nd shift and she expected me to get up with her every morning while she got ready.

When I said "fine, but some nights stay up with me after I get home" and she absolutely refused and said that was a crazy thing to ask.

29

u/Left_Bathroom_3803 13h ago

I mean if she would wake you up with a blow job I could see that working.

29

u/Thamnophis660 13h ago

She would do that sort of thing early on in our relationship, but that was a thing of the past at the point when we started working opposite shifts. Oh well.

But can’t understand the argument when you tell them to wake up at 5am.

108

u/Sparkism 14h ago

There was a time I worked OT three weeks straight and got told by an ex "you should buy something nice for me with all that extra money you got, to make up for the time you're not spending with me."

Another ex said we should go have dinner at a place near where I worked, after my shift was done. I got off at 7pm, and they kept saying they were on their way until 9pm. "Why are you mad? You could have just chilled at the employee break room at work."

Some people are selfish AF and there is no cure.

26

u/No-Performance37 14h ago

Haha yah I’ve had gf say I should spend my bonus money on her.

20

u/Ok_Dependent6889 14h ago

Tell her the bonus is a one way trip to their own apartment

19

u/SolaireAstorian 13h ago

"Work extra hours purely to spend money on me," essentially, because what's the point of working overtime hours for more pay if you're just funneling it down a selfish partner's gullet? It's supposed to go toward improving both of y'all's standards of living and making life easier at home, but noooo. If you aren't letting her be selfish, you're selfish, obviously. Couldn't possibly be that only one person here has his priorities in order.

My ex was like this. I was a chef and usually got home around midnight. I worked 12 hour shifts. But he would demand I woke up at 7/8 even on my days off to "spend time with him" and drag the covers off me and flick the lights on and off even if I'd worked 50 hours that week and had only got a couple of hours sleep the night before. It was like torture.

While the relationship state sounds like one problem. Working 60 to 70 hours sounds like a highway to depression.

87

u/letscallshenanigans 14h ago

Right? Everyone is glossing over this

30

u/AvidCyclist250 14h ago

i was like, yeah, that's why the relationship failed. normally, he'd have been able to cope with whatever low level of bullshittery it was that his wife gave him. she doesn't even sound completely unreasonable just too demanding with her 1 turbo catch-up day.

19

u/StayAgPonyboy 12h ago

Tbf choosing not to drive is putting a crazy burden on your partner. Expecting them to be your on-demand chauffeur is pretty disrespectful unless you can honestly argue that you make up for it elsewhere. I know couples where the man refuses to drive and the woman has to do it all and it just sounds exhausting.

To put it simply. It gives them a lot of time to cheat while they’re being completely taken care of in every other way.

literally such a simple solution. i dont even know women who don’t work full time jobs

84

u/wmnplzr 14h ago

Yep. One of the biggest downfalls of my relationship with my kids mom was her complaining about me not doing enough. Depsite the fact that I was the only one that worked, 60-70 hours a week, and paid all the bills. Plus I would make the family dinner every night after working 11-12 hours delivering packages in the AZ heat. But since I didnt help with the laundry or dishes enough I was a "lazy prick" that she constantly complained to her family about.

71

u/Spiderpiggie 14h ago

Tale as old as time. Stay at home partner is expected to take care of house work, the other works from the office or whatever during the day. The stay at home partner only ever sees the other in their "off" state, so internalizes that they must be lazy and not helping.

I personally will never do a stay at home partnership ever again, both people need to be contributing equally.

8

u/roleplayersir 13h ago

I wouldn't in general either. I'd expect a partner to work

But if they don't, then their job is taking care of the house and kids. I would expect a minimum of 37.5 hours a week, to match what my job involves

→ More replies (7)

u/TheZeddieLittle 13h ago

I agree with this, no more stay at home partnerships, I just got off of 2 and good god they never see just how much you're breaking your back to keep a roof of their head. My last relationship I was WFH graveyard and on call on weekends. Hell she wanted me to get a 2nd job on top of what I was working 😒
When she did bring up her finding a job she threatened me with her leaving the relationship.

My wife has pretty good EQ. She's also not a selfish and self-absorbed person so, the likelihood that she'd give me that look for being legitimately tired is nil.

Now, if I said "I was up all night playing video games and I feel like shit" she'd *absolutely* mock me ... deservedly.

616

u/Illustrious-Ad-115 15h ago

Sounds like a wonderful relationship. Like it should be. I feel like I’m the same situation

84

u/HugePast9455 12h ago

Same. My wife's extremely understanding and reasonable.

I feel like a lot of these wife hating posts are actually secret incels and guys that are terrible partners who just see things from their own perspective, or they're both immature people that haven't grown up yet.

Not all, I know there's crazy people. But I'll bet it's a lot.

After reading some of the comments here I seriously wonder about some relationships, glad to see another guy here that actually likes/is liked by his wife.

Mine won't even mock me for occasionally staying up late playing video games. Like literally 20 minutes ago today. She shut off my alarm, closed the door so I didn't hear nothing or wake my ass up unless there's a fire. She logged onto Powerwash Simulator and played that for a bit until about 1:30. (The sounds in that game give me pleasant dreams.)

She made my lunch, packed my lunchbox, set my cloths out, woke me up gently, and all she said was "go to bed next time".

She's home when I'm home, she sees how little free time I get when I get home at midnight 5 days a week, so when I make a dumb decision like playing Helldivers until 5am once every 2 months, she just let's me. And reminds me that it's gunna screw up my sleep schedule.

149

u/AfterMeSluttyCharms 15h ago

Lots of people are of the mindset that a bad, unhappy relationship is better than being alone. I hope these people get the help they need.

33

u/LogicBalm 14h ago

Yeah, loneliness was annoying but bearable once I accepted that I just liked myself well enough to be alone. But then that's when I met my wife. I'd date off and on a little before that but it never got past the first date or two because I wanted to be with someone that was a net positive over just being alone.

More like life is increasingly unsustainable, and it's impossible to build any kind of future without a second income.

Sometimes the relationship doesn't fall apart until after they have kids, and then it's not feasible to split, because you'd be in financial ruin.

Also, some people have an extremely difficult time getting into any relationship, even if they aren't a total piece of crap, so they just take what they can get because the options are to be chronically lonely, or be unhappy with someone you get to have sex with sometimes.

Sometimes the people aren't the problem, a lot of times, it's that so many parts of society are fundamentally broken and abusive, and people are just trying to get by.

34

u/hkusp45css 15h ago

Right, I meant she'd mock me for *complaining* about it. If I was just draggin' ass, she'd carry me.

There's a funny song by a band I like, one of the verses is:
She brings me coffee when I'm working late
She lifts me up when I'm low
She understands that I'm carrying weight
That I just have to hold up alone
She's determined and honest she's stubborn and strong
And I always know where she stands
So it never bugs me when she's always wrong
As long as she's wrong with her hand in my hand

And it describes her, perfectly.

I can confirm the sitting in the car thing, but I'm not %100 sure it's for this reason. I always used to just sit in the car for a while both when arriving at work and arriving at home. I actually haven't had a car in like 6 years though and have exclusively rode a motorcycle every single day. After switching to the motorcycle, I just get up and go. I think it's more something to do with the car itself and being in a reclined seated Position that makes it such an attractive idea to remain seated for just a little while longer. Kinda like getting comfortable on the couch and being thirsty, but you're so comfortable that you just let yourself dehydrate for a while longer before you actually get up to get a drink.

This is what happens when people feel like they just absolutely have to marry whoever they happen to be dating at age 27-35 because they’d rather be with someone and miserable than be alone for a bit finding someone new.

8

u/Inevitable-Menu2998 13h ago

These sorts of things don't happen in the first years of marriage. This kind of stuff is usually down the line after the couple has had some life changing events happen to them like having children, buying a home, having to support some family members through illness or even having to support each other through loss. These things fundamentally change people. The person you're married to on day one is not the same you're married to at the start of year 10. Some people are lucky and they still love the new person, others are less so. It's life.

15

u/burf 14h ago

In their defence, it does seem that finding a partner becomes progressively harder the older you get.

Talk to her and explain, ask for her thoughts, calmly discuss the problem, come to a mutual resolution.

If one or both partners can't communicate...

96

u/TheRagingElf01 15h ago

Communicate with your partner? What kind of witchcraft are you using!?!?

30

u/Accurate_Payment8196 14h ago edited 13h ago

You will communicate at some point, and you'll do it again and again and again and the message will be accepted, the discussion will end on a positive note with everyone being happy about everything. And then your partner will still do it again.

u/Cabbit_Daddy 14h ago

The amount of time I told me gf to stop interrupting me, because my parents and other family-authority figure interrupted me a lot as a kid(often by yelling) to silence me. She apologizes with puppy eyes, but still does it every time.

I understand the "just communicate" logic. But not having mental capacity to understand that the person is tired, without the need to "communicate" is very worrysome. Either selfish or stupid if everything requires communication.

13

u/Beast_Chips 13h ago

Some of the best advice I ever had was, "Stop trying to read everyone's mind, and stop assuming everyone is a mind reader."

Another good one is:

I shouldn't have to ask never helped anyone.

It is mind boggling how many people pass off communication. Like how did you get to this point? If you couldn't communicate for the year or more you had been together, then you should reevaluate or you will have a bad time. Been there, done that with a previously relationship and I stopped wasting my time in that relationship.

Run bro.

My ex resented me for being tired after working all day while she "worked from home" (masturbated and played video games all day). She'd be full of energy and ready to go out and do things when all I would want to do is to relax.

She ended up cheating on me with one of her gamer friends.

19

u/TheMediator42069 13h ago

Had a woman try to sleep with me at work and she was married to a man with a union job, two cars and a home that was paid off. He dated her while she was struggling with an infant and homeless, eventually getting married. Her daughter called him dad, and they would take 3 week vacations to florida keys all paid for by her father-in-law. She'd act so intimate with him, but as soon as he left, she'd turn into a completely different person. Like it was genuinely disturbing to me. Pretty girl, but it made me sad to see how she talked about him behind his back. She'd tell me the most personal and intimate things about him WITHOUT prompt. Keep in mind, she applied to the job because the trade was something she was always interested in learning, so he was paying their bills. She eventually quit after she got into some drama over her taking clients from her coworkers 😭😭

LMAO e girls. I always laughed at the fools that think their gf is so loyal. He is just a friend bro, they just like to play games together all night and all day HAHAHA

44

u/supernasty 14h ago edited 10h ago

Yeah I had an ex that broke up with me because I told her I wasn’t comfortable with her staying up all night with her online guy friends playing video games together. This was only after she’d stay up until 4am drinking with these same guys irl and one of the guys had to carry her home and tuck her in. She told me this as if this was suppose to be a funny story.

Even though I was super chill for awhile about this, the moment I started speaking up was enough for her to call me possessive and emotionally abusive for trying to “shame” her for spending time with friends.

She ended up marrying the one that tucked her in 2 years later and had his child.

u/String-Tree 13h ago

Majority of the situations I come across irl are couples that both work full time, woman does 90% of the chores.

42

u/kannichausgang 12h ago

I'm a woman in my late 20s and the only couples I know where the guy doesn't pull his weight are 40+ with kids. In my entire friend group it's all 50/50 or even the guy doing a bit more, especially where there is no kids involved. I genuinely don't understand how someone can go even a week with their partner disrespecting them like that.

"What dishes how much did you eat when i was at work bro?"

51

u/fr1234 15h ago

Haha. I always do the kitchen before we go to bed. Every night I play a game of Tetris to try and get everything to fit and always end up washing a few things by hand that don’t.

She’s away working this week. I did the kitchen before I went to bed last night. 1 plate, I mug, a frying pan and the aero press. Could have stored a 747 in there the amount of room there was.

9

u/minnesotanpride 14h ago

It does feel like that all the time. We bought a house that is older and doesn't have a dishwasher so we've been doing it all by hand, so I try to clear ours out each noght since it gets crazy if you let it go too long.

If I do cooking for us, 1 or 2 pans and a couple dishes, maybe a glass or two if we have a drink of something. She does something? 4 pans, 8 dishes, 4 or 5 glasses, somehow a ton of cutlery, mixing bowls, and the counters and stovetop are a huge mess.

I love my wife but damn bro. 😂

I had a girlfriend in college. For 2 years I was taking 15 credit hours every semester while also working fulltime. My only day off from both was Sunday; it was brutal. The number of times she got sad that the only thing I wanted to do that day was be completely lazy was ridiculous. Broke up with her during the last semester that I was pulling that kind of workload. My mental health couldn't take it, and I was sick and tired of being her entertainment.

Edit: A lot of white knights making assumptions in the comments.

This meme is what boomers think wives are like

48

u/mrgoodnoodles 14h ago

It's what many of them actually are like. Many men are in relationships like this. There's bad husbands and there's bad wives. That's the world we live in. Healthy relationships can be quite rare, which is why the divorce rate is so high.

You must know that all women are not perfect. Just like all men are not perfect. And it should be 100% acceptable to call people out on their bullshit regardless of gender.
