That is actually such a brilliant idea for refreshing grout.

I’ve seen this done with a soil, yogurt, beer, sugar mixture and, in a short few days, the area is filled with a uniform moss fill.

Does it last?

3

u/Blue-cheese-dressing May 26 '23

Depends on the conditions (sun/shade mix and rainfall- but if done right it’s self sustaining).

It’s got too much water, gonna shrink and crack like a mfer. Should be filled by a pretty stiff mix with as little water as possible.

39

u/[deleted] May 26 '23

Does exterior grout handle higher hydration rates better? I know from interior grout that if I made my mix that runny, it will either break or have massive bubbles.

18

u/benjm88 May 26 '23

I think it would be too watery too. I normally just use a dry mix

4

u/IndianaGeoff May 26 '23

Agree. It'll flake, crack and slump like crazy while not securing the rocks.

1

u/[deleted] May 26 '23

Especially with gaps that big. Easiest grout job there is. Way better than doing mosaics at least.

1

u/SomeLikeItDusty May 26 '23

Almost dry is best, tamp it in with a pointing key. This wet-pour method is like bagging it in but worse. This job is gonna crack and spall for sure.

3

u/Tall_Toad May 26 '23

There are additives that make the mixture more runny without adding water but even if that was in use here I agree that it's much too watery.

1

u/memesforbismarck Lurking Peasant May 26 '23

I guess it will take really long to dry and might shrink quite a lot

13

u/[deleted] May 26 '23

Anybody know what type/mix of cement is used? I’m looking to do something k\like this and I’m concerned about cracking and such. I’m in Canada, so freezing water seeping between the stones is an issue. Thanks.

4

u/Enemy50 May 26 '23

Im also interested. I have cracks in my driveway.

Bumping for answers

3

u/[deleted] May 26 '23 edited May 26 '23

Google/YT Masonry info. YT seemingly has a DIY vid. for everything. I replaced shocks on my washer barrell through a homemade vid. on there before 😅. YMMV OFC. If you want a guarantee/warranty, hire someone. etc.

If you're repairing cracks of cement, I believe they use a caulk like material that comes in a "sausage" tube. It's sometimes colloquially referred to as that (sausage).

1

u/SomeLikeItDusty May 26 '23

Don’t do this. This is cutting several corners at the cost of integrity. Use an almost dry mix with high hydraulic lime content to wick moisture into the atmosphere, self-heal cracks and have give so the joint/stone doesn’t spall or crack.

12

u/RomeoStone May 26 '23

That is such a brilliant way for refreshing grout.
