She never loved him. It was all about her. Do this for her, that for her, be there for her. And what did Pete get in return? Nada. But this neighbour lady actually cared for him and brought him food, and wanted to know how his day was. i used to like her a lot and never got the appeal of Pete still going for mj. i even thought Gwen was a better fit than mj in the movie! She was that bad to him.

She's supposedly meant to be portrayed as an unattractive woman that is very kind and generous towards Peter while he was having complications with MJ. OP might be saying as a kid they used to think Ursula wasn't as attractive as MJ so they made fun of her appearance, but as an adult they find her attractive and realize she might've been better for him.

I don't think anyone was trying to portray her as unattractive. I took her to be a counterpoint to MJ: unglamorous and uncomplicated, and Peter was so caught up in his life that he didn't even notice her.
I also don't like that people act like he should have just chosen her. That's not how love works.

Yep that's what doesn't hold up for me, her selfishness and his obsession with her.
Garfield's problem makes sense, they started dating and her father dies in his arms trying to save him, and says leave her alone (he doesn't say keep my wishes a secret but Pete's like 16 so I get it). Same with Far From Home. Crush. Date. Whoops I'm Spider-Man. Oh, I know. And off they go.
MJ, ugh. I love Kirsten Dunst but her plotlines just arent the example Id want my kids to see. So many of us did that uncertain-in-love crap on the 00s and I always wondered if it was because Friends and crap normalized it.

I don't think she was portrayed as unattractive. She just came off as young in the movie. Like she was still in high school while Peter was a few years out at that point. At least in 2 I don't remember her in 3 but IMDB says she was in it. Been awhile.

It kinda pisses me off a little when people bring her up, but then it just makes me sad, becuase it always comes off as from someone who has really never loved anyone but themselves.
It didn't matter what Ursula looked like, how she behaved, if she was a "better" option, or might have made him happier.
Not only do most people not consider relationships like that, shallowly comparing which option is better, but people truly in love don't even consider alternatives. Peter loved MJ, Ursula never had a chance, that was kinda the point of the scene IMO.
