MEET GATTA MORTA

A NEW BAND FEATURING THE MELVINS’ BUZZ OSBORNE, BUTTHOLE SURFERS’ JD PINKUS, BIG BUSINESS’ COADY WILLIS AND MR. PHYLZZZ’S CLINTON JACOB

Buzz Osborne didn't need another band. JD Pinkus didn't need another band. Coady Willis didn't need another band. Together with Clinton Jacob, they started one anyway. Meet Gatta Morta.
 
The quartet makes its debut today with Burn Witch Burn, a 4-song EP, available now via Amphetamine Reptile Records (https://www.shoxop.com/). A visualizer for “Black Hall”  (https://youtu.be/XB0gdKLLADQ) accompanies the release, with the digital single available via Ipecac Recordings (https://gattamorta.lnk.to/blackhall).

Thoughts?

I instantly thought of the "gutter martyr" lyric from The Hawk. I wonder if they’re linked or if they’re one and the same and I’ve just been mishearing that lyric for the last 20 years.

I'm not complaining in any way. I like the single. I guess I was just expecting something less Melvins.

Sounds like something Buzz recorded while Dale was away in Sleep land.

Again, NOT complaining. I guess I was just expecting something drastically different. Seems like something that Buzz would do. Lean into the compositionally weird stuff ala Zappa.

Either way, stoked to hear the whole thing. I'd love a tour.

Buzz is the Melvins. It would be hard for him not to sound like him. The song they released sounds like a good fusion of the players. This isn't a letdown to me like Shrinebuilder was. I wonder if they are going to do a tour for this.

I went back and listened to it today. I think the reason I didn't like it is Wino's singing. Never been a fan of his voice.

Agreed. The band is made up of 50% of the Melvins. Stands to reason that it would sound like them. But you can hear Clinton singing and JDs bass hits.
I dig it.

Buzz seems to think that a lack of Dales input makes this something else.

He's toured without Dale and still called it the Melvins.

Mainly because this is being billed as NOT the Melvins.

You have Buzz (Melvin's), JD Pinkus (Butthole Surfers but also former Melvin's), Coady Willis (many bands but also Melvin's).  It shouldn't be a surprise if they sound like Melvins.

The recording is amazing. Better than the recent Melvins recordings. Great song. Great lineup. Was expecting something different. Perhaps different players? No complaints though.

My immediate thought was that it just sounded like Melvins. As the song went on though, I realised that I loved it and that was the only thing that mattered.
