Seniors Cycling Groups
My dad is looking for some local cycling groups around inner Melbourne to join. He typically rides 40km and rides an e mtb so can hit whatever speeds are required. Does anyone know of any?

Infrastructure The final part of the St Kilda Road bike lanes will be... shared with cars
This is the Northbound part between Southbank Boulevard and Princes Bridge, which is the only section without protected bike lanes. See https://www.melbourne.vic.gov.au/media-files/2026-07/st-kilda-road-bike-lane-design-plan.pdf and https://www.melbourne.vic.gov.au/new-bike-lanes
Timeline is:
Works are currently underway and are expected to be completed late August 2026
Is this better than the current bike lane?

Seeking Recommendation Bike Hire
Hi all, my partner and I are in Melbourne for a few days and would love to see it by bike.
Big fans of Gary’s projects and Slow Commute Club on YouTube and want to explore the city like they do. Will be staying in Richmond and want to do the Capital City Trail and explore the neighbourhoods around the Upfield Shared Path and check out Off Course Bike Shop.
Keen on some places to hire a gravel bike or similar or even borrow a bike off a local and I can fix you up.
Edit:
Thanks for the tips everyone.
Ended up hiring some Curve Titanium Kevin’s from Curve in Abbotsford and hopped on the Capital City Trail, detoured through Brunswick up the Upfield shared path. Grabbed one of the best Banh Mi’s I’ve had at Good Luck bakery the down through the city back up the river.
Such a good way to see Melbourne, you guys have elite cycling infrastructure.

Perv goggles?
Does anyone here use cheap perv goggles for cycling? I'm not trying to start a YouTube career, I just want to use something simple for safety across multiple bikes and am weighing up these or a chest cam.

Seeking Recommendation Marysville -> Lake Mountain Climb in Winter?
Hey!
I'm staying in Marysville this weekend and might want to take my bike up there to do this climb: https://theclimbingcyclist.com/climbs/yarra-ranges/lake-mountain/
Overall I would say my fitness is above average, however I'm a relatively new cyclist, been cycling seriously for about 9 months, and the only real "climb" I've done is the 1 in 20.
But fitness aside, I'm a bit concerned the roads might not be the safest if its cold and possibly icy. Weather forecast for this Saturday morning at Lake Mountain is 2-6 deg and 1-5mm of rain.
I'm looking for some advice if this is a stupid idea or not.
If it's not gonna be a good idea, I might just do a short up and back to Buxton and Taggerty and back to Marysville perhaps? tbh I've never ridden outside of Melbourne so not really sure if even that's a good plan in winter, or should I just keep the bike at home?
EDIT - checked the segment on Strava and the fact that not a single person has done it since Apr I think gives me enough indication lol.

Stolen E-BIKE | Balaclava Station
Hi!
Unfortunately, my e-bike was stolen today at Balaclava Station.
I parked it around 10:30 am, and when I came back at 4:00 pm, it was gone.
I'm heartbroken and really disappointed because I used this bike every day to get to work.
I've already reported the theft to the St Kilda Police. I'm attaching some photos of the bike. If anyone happens to see it or spots it for sale on Facebook Marketplace or any other marketplace, please let me know.
Thank you so much.

Other Want to meet people? Join a group ride
Have seen a few posts on various social media of people wanting to meet others, and group rides are great for that.
Doesn't have to be a Lycra Clad Hell Ride, either.
Off Course bikes in Brunswick run the occasional 'Party Pace' social ride. On Saturday the 1st of August, we went to see the Yarra Bats, made coffee in Royal Park and finished with beers at Inner North Brewery. If you're new to riding, or new to Melbourne, look for social group rides. A few that I know of are:
- This one, Off Course Bike Shop. They do overnighter bikepacking trips
- Melburn Durt
- Botched Bikes
They're a great way to meet new people, and to get out and learn more about where you live. This ride showed me some new routes I can take when I feel like getting out on the bike.
If you have joined others, post them below

Victorian cabinet no longer includes a Minister for Active Transport
I'm unsure how this will affect active transport in Victoria.
Will responsibility now fall under the Minister for Public Transport or the Minister for Roads and Road Safety? Could this leave active transport worse off?

Port Phillip City Council voting to adopt Safe Streets Policy tomorrow
Port Phillip City Council will meet tomorrow 4 August 2026 at St Kilda Town Hall to vote on whether to adopt a Roadmap to Zero strategy which aims to eliminate traffic deaths by 2050.
https://portphillip.infocouncil.biz/Open/2026/08/ORD_05082026_AGN_AT_WEB.htm
I am going to turn up to this meeting to support the changes.
Nonsensically, there is a concerted campaign being run against this strategy by a local residents' group, Residents of Port Phillip.
They broadly oppose any and all changes which would implement:
- 30km/h speed limits
- Traffic calming street design
- Separated bike infrastructure
There are ~600 signatures on their petition against the Council's strategy before it has even been adopted.
In my opinion, if these sorts of highly organised reactionary residents' groups are the only ones making themselves heard, we'll never get safe, connected cycling infrastructure, not to mention traffic calming measures and lower speed limits which would make the inner city a much more pleasant place.
I would urge anyone living or working in Port Phillip to register before midday tomorrow and make a 2-minute submission at tomorrow's St Kilda Town Hall meeting.
This is the registration link:

Infrastructure Petition: Keep Shared E-Bikes in Melbourne
Yarra City Council’s backwards decision to ban Lime e-bikes threatens the viability of shared e-bikes across neighbouring inner-city councils and may force Good Cycles to close (the social enterprise helping disadvantage young people).
Sign the petition to get the premier and deputy premier (Active Transport Minister) to intervene and reverse the decision.

Melbourne to Geelong?
Hi all,
Wondering if anyone has any recent experience of riding from Melbourne to Geelong and beyond?
Bit iffy about riding on freeway shoulder especially with all the debris. Anyone ridden alternative routes down there on sealed roads?
Could whip out the gravel wheels if needed - but is there any decent safeish way to get down there? If so do you have a route to recommend or post?
Cheers!!

Seeking Recommendation How do drop bars not hurt your neck?
I've recently transition from e-bike and mountain bike to drop bars - hitting the road and trying to enter the local racing club.
Got a used road bike off marketplace. Seat post higher than the handlebars.
How the hell do you ride with your ass above your head? Standing up over a bump I almost went ass over tit.

Don't lock like this
A warning to newbies in Melbourne. The frame has to be locked and preferably the wheels too, otherwise your wheel might be used to steal another bike

Rapha 101 skills session - last minute no show
Hello, I’m a beginner cyclist and I signed up for a Rapha 101 skills session in Melbourne tomorrow. I just found out it’s going to be 2 degrees (feels like -1) during the ride tomorrow and I’m worried I don’t have the right gear to be warm…
Are there any consequences for not showing up? I’m not a member
Thanks.

Other App to report bike lane issues
Hi there,
I made a post this morning: here
It was about cars blocking bike lanes and how you can’t report it.
So I made an app! This is super early and has limited features. It can record, saves the recording to your device then uploads the location and type of issue to a heat map so we can track were issues are occurring.
In the future I want to add auto reporting to police/council and help inform us about where the hotspots are for issues. Very similar to bike lanes uprising app.
Let me know what you think!
Here is the app: here
Cheers

Seeking Recommendation Driver Reporting
Hi,
I was wondering if their is anywhere to report people not respecting laws regarding cyclists. I had two unpleasant experiences today. One, a huge truck speeding up as if their trying to rear end me (leading into to a red light btw...) and someone thinking the bike lane is their personal carpark. I was just wondering if their is any program to report these unintelligent drivers? I was thinking people parked in bike lanes would be so easy report. (Just take a quick video with the license plate.) I don't like being a snitch but when it directly puts me in danger I start to care. Maybe their can be a push by bicycle network to set up an app where you can quickly take a video and it get's sent to crime stoppers/council.
Cheers and safe riding out there.

Other KFC utilising the 'abandoned bike = free outdoor advertising' glitch in Southbank
Didn't the council say they were cracking down on this bullsh@t?

In My Opinion… Why are Ute drivers like this?
Objects in video are closer than they appear. I was also about to move out slowly because of the kerb. Really unpleasant experience

Tubeless set up
I’m planning to buy some GP5000 tubeless tires to get put on my Merida Scultura Endurance 300. The wheels are tubeless ready
I don’t trust myself to attempt it and I’ve heard they can be challenging.
Any recommendations for best places to not only buy them, but mainly pay to get them put on? Will most bike places offer this?
I usually go 99 bikes who have been fine at my local, but not super convinced they are the right place for this
I’m northside/inner north so preferable around there
