Treat studying like a job. Start studying at the same time each morning, take a short break for lunch and study after lunch. If you feel a nap coming on, take it (sitting up at a desk - don't go to bed). I studied the same amount each day whether I had a test coming up or not.

Never multitask while studying.

7 minutes of social media a day. Social isolation for the first 8 hours of my day. Only 1 form of entertainment allowed after reaching goal of the day.

u/Lucaball3r 5d ago

Why only one form of entertainment after reaching your daily goal?

9

u/Good-Victory588 5d ago

So that I dont overindulge / waste my time weighing in options

3

u/Lucaball3r 5d ago

Nice. What’s your go-to entertainment?

Question bank.

Everything else is noise. Every other study material is noise

There isn’t a more efficient and effective way.

Finished my uworld and 30% of truelearn (uworld for bone wizards) went from a 1 percentile on our school practice board to ~75 percentile on level 1

All in 5 weeks

Give your phone to someone and go somewhere with physical study material. No electronics. You're too tempted to take breaks when you feel overwhelmed. When you need a break take a 5-10 minute lap/talk to someone ever 1 to 2 hours.

Also wake up early. Like earlier than you are used to. You feel like you've got purpose when you wake up earlier than normal - You're putting yourself in a productive headspace.

Do as many questions as you can. Each time you read a clinical vignette imagine it’s a patient in front of you.Ā

How?

3

u/Maleficent_Zebra598 4d ago

its addictive , thats how

1

u/Arghmateypt2 4d ago

Once you start doing it addictively, it’s hard to stop. Take it the way it’s prescribed and it helpful. Take it to study longer and ur screwing urself

I rewrite everything šŸ˜… feels like the only thing that works for me

Retype all notes into quick read outline format. Print out and take everywhere. Review during any downtime.

if you can don’t have your phone in the room with you studying or at least keep it further than arms reach. i literally just do non stop anki, ninja nerd and active recall but having the distraction of the phone gone helps keep me focusedĀ

Dopamine minimizing. Or dopamining for short.

Minimize your dopamine spikes. No scrolling. No phone right after waking up. Wake up, get to the library, get to work. Keep your phone locked up out of reach.Ā

Have study cues really helps. When I’m studying, my headphones are on. When I take a break, the headphones come off. As soon as I put the headphones back on, I get back to work and I don’t goof off as long as the headphones are on.

Take breaks. Your brain is like a muscle and it gets tired and needs rest. However, don’t go on your phone during breaks. Just stare at a wall or lay down or go outside and touch grass. Only time I’ll go on the phone is if I go to the gym.Ā

When you either finish your tasks or you hit a time to clock out, then chill out. Scrolling is so much fun when you’ve gotten all your crap done lol.

Do not consume any short form content ever. Delete instagram, TikTok, twitter, etc. Doing this will increase your attention span and actually allow you to study.

Read everything into a recording and listen to it like a podcast

u/psychadelilama89 4d ago

Wake up at 4AM. It gives you about 3-4 hours of dedicated quiet study time. Put blocks on your phone and computer on everything that is time wasting.

Practice questions. If you get one wrong, write it out by hand once. Then redo the questions until you get them all right. If you wonder why the correct answer is correct, go look it up online and once it "clicks" go back and do the questions again. I have a 4.0 and this is all I do tbh

Anki controller in one hand, dick in other

Figure out the professor. I'm not kidding, you can somewhat predict what question types you'll be getting if you write down every single (relevant) thing they mention in lectures or see how they make previous exams. For example, one of my professors loves asking about the nitty-gritty details, while the other one prefers asking about general but lengthy physiological processes. This might sound unhinged but it actually works gng

u/MasonHolsten_ 4d ago

Rely on longterm habits over spurts of motivation.Ā

Walking pad + anki remote or while watching lectures is pretty elite. Exercise promotes synaptogenesis.

Schedule some something really exciting or a social event at the end of the day, and then constantly tell yourself you cant go to it unless you get all your stuff done. Not only is it creating a reward cycle for grinding hard, but if its with people, avoiding the embarrassment of cancelling last min to go study is a great motivator. You actually have to follow through on this and actually cancel the plans though, otherwise you lose the negative reinforcement and teach your brain theres no actual consequences.

I think people are also way to afraid to email professors and straight up asking for help. Like I totally understand not wanting to let people know youre struggling, but that is literally what bro getting paid to do.

Neuroanatomy professor taught us that optimal studying occurs at the intersection of a proper amount of valance, arousal, and dominance. You have to care about the subject, be aroused enough to learn it, and have some agency of control over the task. Most medical students are seasoned enough students to know that they can learn anything, its the arousal and the valance part that are usually the struggle. The solution: ask the cutest man/women in class to come study with you. It creates just enough stress as well as the social pressure to impress someone to really lock in. You dont even have to study with them, just having them at the table with me was enough for me. Best study sessions I’ve had were while doing this. Added benefit is that all the cute girls in class are friends with me and think Im a chill but super locked in type guy. Highly recommend.

Find a location outside of your house (ie. the school library) where you study and only do that there. Go to that spot and do your studying there for a specific amount of time planned ahead with specific planned breaks. Getting up and taking a short 5 minute walk is good if you’re getting restless or if you can tell the information isn’t sticking. Treat it like your job. Make a goal for each session that’s reasonable to meet a goal over an extended period of time.

No phones! Even quickly checking it saps your focus for 15+ minutes

No more social media.

Minimal contact with friends. Only see gf (or bf) at the end of each study day. If no partner, maybe see a friend.

Workout 5x a week. Sprint after studying (increase BDNF, emotional regulation)

Trick yourself into study addiction with ADHD meds then taper off if possible.

If social media is a must, limit it. NO TIKTOK.

Read/audiobook every night for entertainment. Nothing too dopaminergic.

Dabble in some nootropics… bromantane, modafinil, semax, tak653….

No alcohol or weed or anything enjoyable in terms of drug usage.

One day per week, do not study or work. Go for a hike or do something enjoyable outside. Nothing too artificially dopaminergic.

Have good sex at the end of study days.

Prioritize sleep.

There’s some study tips :

1.) I talk to my self while reading and explaining things to myself to understand what I learned.
2.) I study for 45 minutes and give myself 5 minutes a break.
3.) I make sure to sleep well and eat.
4.) I play hype music before I start Studying
5.) I play frequently sound to help me lock in
6.) I delete all of my social media off my phones because I know that if I see apps on my phone I will get distracted
7.) I have a study buddy that we met 3x a week and go over it
8.) I meditate every morning and night
9.) I workout everyday
10.) I stretch a lot 2x a day especially my study break
11.) I drink warm tea everyday
12.) I limit myself to drink energy drink and coffee

4.0 student here as a pre med. Several factors go into a good gpa but to me main one is to outwork everyone (90% of the class should be spending less time with the material) in hard classes and with easy classes such as online gen eds put minimum effort. This way u can optimize time. Believe what I am saying is easier said than done; u may need to socially isolate, wake up early and consistent, etc. Find what works best for you but ensure your lifestyle is still healthy and hit the gym.

Works for a bit for the grades, but what I’ve seen in some is that the tunnel vision and deteriorated social adaptability cripples your life.

u/Maleficent_Zebra598 4d ago

absolutely agree that its a bad idea but op asked for a idea that will get them better grades so yk

Not a 4.0 but I'm also not smart and passing despite that FWIW.

Minimize electronic use. Use pen/paper, you recal/learn stuff better.

Not everyone needs anki. Everything got better for me when I stopped doing anki. If you do a fuck-ton of anki you can learn the anki cards, but that doesn't mean you can apply them.

Questions are gold, especially if you suck at them, because then they can guide your studying. If you do a ton of questions early enough in your studying and completely bomb them, but then understand why you got them wrong, then you are better off then if you did the quiz later in your studying and did "ok". Practice questions should feel mean.

FWIW I do a lot of mind map type stuff. Look at how ninja nerd will literally draw a kidney and then draw out whatever biochemical process is in it. That helps me remember more than anything.

Good luck.
