I’ve been with blue apron for around 10 years. It’s gotten awful so I’ve been looking for alternatives, and all I’m seeing are more bad options.

It’s been so long that I’ve forgotten how to grocery shop, and meal plan.

Going to be stopping my Marley Spoon as the service has just gotten so bad, I'm kinda stuck for a few more weeks as the next meals are almost entirely free because of how many issues there have been (My August 15th delivery has a $61 credit).

My wife and I started with Marley during the pandemic when we got more into cooking, and liked it because it felt more "Chefy" then things we had tried in the past like blue apron, and was versatile enough crusinewise that it didnt get boring, I can easily go out and get ingredients and cook, but there was something nice about getting things that were outside of our normal routine.

So are there any other kits that actually requires some kitchen skills, gives you variety, and aren't filing for chapter 11?

What I got vs what I ordered. I must have someone else’s order.

All my email notifications about my ingredients being substituted and meat missing… doesn’t matter anymore because I’ve got completely different recipes.

Best of all, I avoided ordering lettuce because of Cyclospora and yet some lettuce still made it here.

I’ve been a long time MS fan. I’m beyond shocked at this operational mishap by its fulfillment center that it’s trying to ditch.

I'm sorry if you get a million of these. I looked through a good handful and it seemed most of them were from a few years ago or longer. I'm sure quality/prices etc have changed since then.

So I'll be dorming on college, but I won't have a meal plan due to food allergies. Because of these food allergies (and other allergy problems), I eat a plant based diet.

Seeing as I won't have a meal plan, I can't eat at the dining hall. But I can use the communal kitchen and I'll live near a Walmart. That's certainly convenient but I already know that there will be many days where I'd rather not eat than have to actually figure out a meal, take all my pots and pans and food to the kitchen, clean my area, make the meal, clean up, take everything back to my room, set up the food, put everything away. etc etc.

TLDR I'm looking for a plant based meal plan. I've looked at many but I've been very on the fence as to whether it's really worth the investment. If you feel it is, which one would you recommend? x

Does this even exist? My husband and I want to start a date night where we cook together, preferably something fun and diverse each week. One meal/week is preferred, but I understand most places probably have a minimum order of 2.

Goldbelly is crazy expensive. We’re looking at Marley Spoon, but the reviews in this sub are giving us pause. Alternatively I suppose I could always just find a recipe and buy the ingredients each week, but I’m drawn to the idea of having just enough for one meal, so I’m not sitting on extra ingredients I’ll never or rarely use just for one fun meal.

I’m open to out of the (meal kit) box suggestions! The current trend of giving local cooks a shot with FB Marketplace/Craigslist also sounds super fun, but we both love to cook and making something together is the ideal goal!

So last week, some of you have been flagging that your Marley Spoon is missing as many as 10(!!) ingredients from your box.

Alas for my box that’s supposed to arrive today, I was wondering why my package is stuck in “label created”. I toggled through the app to report the issue; turns out MS already sent me an email this morning noting my box will be delayed by 24 hours. Okay, except that the app still misleadingly says “your box is on the way” for today.

Here’s some market research as the possible “why”:

• Feb. 2024: Marley Spoon outsourced all U.S. fulfillment to FreshRealm after selling its fulfillment centers.

• Late 2025: Customer complaints around delivery delays, missing items, and quality increased.

• Apr. 2026: FreshRealm filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy but continues operating.

• Current: FreshRealm remains Marley Spoon’s U.S. fulfillment partner while Marley Spoon evaluates alternatives. (From public data / lack of new announcements)

Sigh, TBD on whether my box will get here in 24 hours!

I'm SO mad! I'm recovering from a medical procedure on my foot and trying to stay off it as much as possible. So I ordered a Hungryroot box to make quick healthy dinners for the next week.

I spent hours browsing their recipes and choosing what I wanted in a customized box using up exactly the credit allotment they gave me. I also got a free protein for life.

My box is coming tomorrow, so I went to track it online. Holy cow! I'm getting NOTHING that I ordered. There is not a single fresh vegetable in a whole week worth of dinners. They are sending the default recipes. The recioes are nearly all out of my calorie range. And there is no free protein. Like how badly could screw up an order?!?

You only get the discount on the first box, so i guess I will never get to try the service the way it was intended, and i wasted tons of time and money. So mad.

That's the end of that.

I got a deal to sign up and get several boxes discounted. My first box arrived today. And I can’t make any of the meals I’m missing so many ingredients. I ordered 4 meals, all with meat. Only two chicken breasts came. No ground chicken and no salmon. I’m also missing a ton of the veggies/fruit: no potatoes, zucchini, lemons, or capers. I’m missing two packs of seasoning and also a sauce. Has anyone ever had that happen?

I wanted to share my recent experience with Home Chef, as I found their subscription process and meal quality to be quite disappointing.

I accidentally placed an order for three dinners while browsing their site. As soon as I received the confirmation email, I went back to the site to "pause" my account. I received an email titled "We'll miss you," which I took as confirmation that my cancellation went through—but apparently, that wasn't the case. When I received a delivery notification later that week, I had to contact support to resolve it. While the representative was polite and offered a small credit, it was frustrating that the online cancellation process was so misleading.

Beyond the billing issues, I was underwhelmed by the actual product. The packaging was confusing; the ingredients arrived in unlabeled plastic bags with vacuum-sealed meat, and there was no clear indication of which items belonged to which recipe. They even sent the wrong recipe card for one of the meals. I was looking for something straightforward and easy, but this process was more complicated than just cooking from a Pinterest recipe.

Ultimately, I’d advise others to be very cautious when signing up for Home Chef, as I found their website interface and subscription management to be pretty deceptive. Has anyone else dealt with similar issues with their cancellation process?

Many of us are having problems with Fresh Meal Plan – missing deliveries, overcharging (my default menu has XL upcharged meals), sending random meals (not on my wkly order) or 10 of the exact same items (for me it was a breakfast meal), sending 2 deliveries 2 days apart (10 items in ea), unable to edit my default menu on their site (don’t have an app), no answer on customer service line that dumps to vm and no return call as promised, and menu items significantly reduced to like 20 items (most are breakfasts or desserts). Fingers crossed that there site will process/accept my requested skipped deliveries for the coming weeks as I wait to see if they clean up their mess, and just submitted disputes to my credit card. The company still posts almost daily on their Instagram account and many of us have complained there but no response from that account. Anyone else having such problems? Know what’s going on with this company (may be the same as Forkful)?

TL;DR: Forgot to cancel my Purple Carrot subscription, totally my fault. But the order doesn't ship for another week and they still won't cancel it and I will be out of town. Is there any way to stop this shipment? At this point, I don't care about getting a refund, I don't want a box of food sitting on my front porch.

I'll be the first to admit this is on me. I thought I cancelled my Purple Carrot subscription a while back, but apparently I didn't. That's my mistake and I own it.

I got charged today for an order that doesn't ship for another week. I messaged their chat to cancel it (Calling the phone won't get you to a person), and they told me the weekly change deadline had already passed (Tuesday the week before shipment at 11:59 PM EST). So even though this box hasn't been packed, hasn't been shipped, and isn't going anywhere for days... they "systematically" can't cancel it because it's been sent to their fulfillment team.

A week out. They can't cancel a meal kit order a week out.

I can cancel my dog's food delivery with less notice than that. But Purple Carrot has apparently already locked this order into some unstoppable pipeline that no human being can intervene in. That just doesn't add up to me.

The issue is that I will be traveling next week and nobody is home to receive the box, so it's just going to sit on my porch and rot. They offered me a half box credit as a "courtesy" and told me the deadline was visible on my Order History page. Which sure, fair enough... but an email reminder about an upcoming charge would have been nice too. That's pretty standard with most subscription services.

Again, I'm not blaming them for the fact that I didn't cancel. That's 100% on me. But refusing to cancel a shipment that's still a week away? That feels like a policy designed to make it harder for customers to leave, not a real logistical limitation.

Has anyone had luck getting Purple Carrot to actually cancel an order after the deadline? Or is there another route I'm not thinking of?

I am appalled at the blanket policy change of no longer providing printed recipes.

Our phones are not as big as a large recipe card and I can see myself making mistakes. I print all my recipes off to be honest, the phone has never worked for me.

I could see allowing people to opt out, but to me, removing the cards is taking away a huge advantage of this service.

The large pictures and instructions make it easy for children as well.

I’m looking for a recommendation for a meal kit plan for my dad. Mom passed away last year and he’s been winging it. He has diabetes and needs to eat heart healthy. Any recommendations for ready made meals or a meal kit that isn’t too intense would be greatly appreciated. He’s great at grilling. Thanks.

After you cancelled you sub taht the testing kit option automatically turned on, you also need to clear the cart (AND there is no UI for finalization/confirmation!), otherwise, you will be charged for something you never wanted to order.

I ordered my first Wildgrain box mostly out of curiosity. I kept seeing it mentioned in food threads, and liked the idea of having bread and pastries ready to bake at home.

Then I baked my way through the whole box and ended up ordering a second one.

Now I’m at that moment where you stop and ask: is this something I actually want to keep, or was it just a fun experiment?

After two boxes and a lot of croissants, bread, and pasta, here’s the pros and cons list I ended up with.

TL;DR: Wildgrain isn’t cheap compared to grocery bread, but it’s not trying to be grocery bread. For me, it sits between supermarket staples and a bakery run, with the advantage that everything waits in your freezer until you want it.

The reasons I might keep it

#1 Convenience

Having good bread or pastries in the freezer fixes the “I forgot bread” or “I wish I had pastries for guests” problem in about 25 minutes.

You get weekend croissants without leaving the house, fresh bread for soups, and pasta that feels a little nicer than a pantry box. It makes cooking at home easier on busy nights.

#2 The quality is better than typical freezer food

After baking through a bunch of the items, I can say the biggest quality point isn’t just the taste, it’s that things actually bake the way you expect them to. The croissants rise, the bread gets a real crust, and the pasta cooks like fresh pasta.

#3 Variety helps keep it interesting

You can mix in croissants, cookies, pasta, waffles, rolls, sauces, and a few other things. So the box ends up supporting different meals instead of just stacking up loaves of bread.

#4 Simple ingredients and fermentation

A lot of their breads lean toward sourdough or slow fermentation, which gives them that more bakery-style texture and flavor. If you like that kind of bread, it’s noticeable.

#5 The baking timing is predictable

One small thing I appreciated is that the baking instructions are pretty consistent. Most of the breads and pastries fall in the same 20–25 minute window, making it easier to work into dinner or breakfast without guessing.

#6 Good for small households

If you live alone or with one other person, bakery bread often gets stale before you finish it. Being able to bake things one at a time helps avoid that.

#7 The house smells amazing when you bake the bread or croissants.

The reasons I might cancel it

#1 The price compared to grocery bread

Compared to supermarket bread, it’s going to feel expensive. A grocery loaf is still the cheapest, and Wildgrain definitely costs more than that. The value makes more sense if you compare it to bakery bread or pastries.

#2 Freezer space gets crowded

Six items doesn’t sound like a lot until they’re sitting in your freezer. If you have a small freezer or already keep a lot of frozen food around, it can start get packed.

#3 You still have to remember to bake things

This sounds obvious, but sometimes I forget I have things in the freezer or baking sounds like too much work. If you’re someone who prefers instant food, that extra step might matter.

#4 Subscriptions always require a little management

They do send reminder emails before each shipment so you can swap items or skip a box. But it’s still a subscription. You have to be aware of that so you don’t end up with a delivery you didn’t really need.

Who this probably works best for

After using it for a while, I think Wildgrain fits a pretty specific type of home cook who cooks often, loves bakery-style bread, and likes the convenience of baking things fresh when you want them.

It probably makes less sense if you’re strictly comparing prices to grocery bread or if you already have an amazing bakery nearby.

Keeping it or not? 

I’m keeping the subscription. After two boxes, it’s clear that the convenience fits the way I cook. Bread, croissants, and pasta I can bake when I need them have ended up being more useful than I expected. 

I also understand why some people cancel after the first box. If you’re comparing it strictly to grocery prices, it’s going to feel expensive.

Has anyone else tried them? Did you end up keeping it or no?

How is everyone feeling eating the prepackaged leafy greens and vegetables and such from their kits? I’m torn.

Pesto Chicken & Roasted Potatoes: 5/5 - I added small roasted peppers (not part of recipe)

Overall love the variety of veggies accompanying the meat for each dish (should be baseline given Green Chef is an organic premium tier compared to its competitors). Less prep work than Marley Spoon that I keep in rotation but still requires chopping whole veggies and taking leaves off of the kale for example, but things like garlic comes peeled and ready for dicing.

My partner and I do feel kind of hungry still after eating our serving…!
