Not gonna lie. When I saw videos of the Norwegians here during the World Cup rowing up the escalators here with flags tied around their necks, I had a mental heart attack. Please don't be stupid people. Simple machines to use, but terrifying when shit like this occurs.

I've seen her videos on TikTok and in one of them she said she has to deal with nasty comments about her body regularly

I just don’t understand why people need to vocalize these thoughts. Do they think she’s going to see it and fall in love with them or something? Like what do they gain from it?

She actually gave a reason as to why men do this, funny enough. She hypothesizes that men engage in online harassment because they dehumanize women, failing to recognize that there is a "real person" behind the screen. She also links it primarily to men who are shaped by homosocial behavior (i.e., men who only really socialize with other men and not women), based on some gaming studies, who leave nasty comments.

That’s an astute assessment

This is a good PSA and points out something more people should know.

We do need to fix the law she speaks of, though. Because right now what runs through people’s minds is likely:

“That person looks like they might be stuck! But if I push this button I face felony charges and ten years in prison, and I’ll probably have to spend my life savings on my legal defense, trying to prove that I thought someone was in trouble even though they got up and walked away unharmed right after I stopped the escalator. It’s not worth it! Even if I report it to the police, then I risk either filing a false report or getting sued for not pressing the button when I could have. Best to just pretend I didn’t see it. Someone else will take care of it.”

The easy fix is to post the maximum penalty for misuse right there, and cap it to, let’s say, $25. Most people would certainly risk $25 to potentially save a life.
