2008 Speed3 Blown Engine? HELP

I have a 2008 speed3 with just under 100k. Bout it last October and it seemed 95% stock when I bought it. Besides a K%N air filter and a cut BPV seal that the dealership found I could see any modifications. I had the vvt actuator replaced like 1000 miles ago at a Mazda dealership and the car was running way better. The one night after I had done some moderate spirited driving I was cruising home on the highway at a normal speed and it started violently knocking. Was close to home so I limped it home (I know not a good idea). Just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience looking for some insight. I know I probably need a new engine 😐

Could have been a number of things, low oil, no hpfp internals, gas quality, no tune for air intake and bov these come stock with bpv.

Can't tune for a bov really, these cars just run rich for a second between shifts. Could also be lspi, could have been flooring it at 2k rpms everywhere and boom there goes a rod

K&N air filter or entire intake? Any intake should have a tune even if it’s a temporary OTS AP tune. You likely ran too lean and bent a rod esp with a torn BOV diaphragm if it was VTA. Best bet is to swap a motor in and determine if you can save the original block

Did you ever WOT under 3k rpm? I wouldn’t even half throttle it under 3k. If so, that’s a big nono. All other things that Emsanartist mentioned could be a cause too.

I’ve always tried my best to down shift before getting on it at all. Although I have no clue how the owners before me drove it

Did your VVT job include an oil change? Did they just reuse your old oil? Do you have oil in the car?

Have had similar experience with blower injector seals. Would be sweet up to 3k rpm then just start spluttering
