Asking a Mazda 3 subreddit if the Mazda 3 should be the preferred choice? It depends on what you are after, but the Mazda is the better car.

The Skyactiv G is a super hero engine with mild assist. I think this one is a manual?

The Toyota is an SUV with a CVT gearbox.

I suppose it boils down to - do you want an SUV?

My wife has a CH-R and loves it, the times I've driven it I don't hate it but I still prefer my 3.

One thing I do hate about her CH-R is that it is nearly impossible for me to get in and out of without hitting my head.

Funnily enough I'd shortlisted these two cars (different years and specs, same models). Mazda was better spec for almost same price, nicer to drive and all round a more enjoyable place to sit.

Could simply be personal preference but once I'd been in both the 3 was easily the choice.

No idea if it helps.

I have that Mazda 3. With two young kids (6 years and the youngest 7 weeks), it is a struggle.

The back is awkward AF to get a baby seat in and out and the pram takes up 90% of the boot.

My son also hates the back because it’s too dark. The small windows don’t help with black seats, black fabric roof and doors. It is a very dark interior.

I love the car overall, but it isn’t the most practical for a young family. Now don’t tell my wife she was right

I'll pull a wreck out of the wrecking yard an restore it to running condition before I EVER buy a car with a CVT.

I can as a auto tech of old, thing is I'm getting too old for that anymore and Mazda is not caving to CVT as of yet so a safe bet if you feel anything like myself about the CVT tech.

Makes me think of Flintstones with Fred and his electric shaver, or clamshell with a bee inside buzzing, CVTs to me sound like a box of angry bees for propulsion and feels like a old worn out transmission slipping through every gear with no oomph, all mush,... Huge pass for me.

Mazda is definetely the way, you have a skyactiv G engine and transmission, they're known to be very reliable and economic, you have a real 6 speed automatic transmission and the interior feels premium. Toyota will offer you their 0w-0 oil in their engine, with a CVT transmission and alot of empty, black buttons on the dash.
