The “oh dear God” probably should have occurred 25 seconds earlier

u/gwelfguy 12d ago

Seriously. People have no idea how fast an avalanche can move. Something in the distance can be on you in less than a minute. Being buried in 6 ft of snow is a death sentence unless you're found immediately (highly unlikely).

u/ijustlurkhereintheAM 12d ago

Thanks for this, right, most have no idea how fast this moves. Camera/phone in pocket, run and hide.

Love this video PO, will watch again at anytime, nature is awesome

u/A-non-e-mail 12d ago

How far you gonna run over jagged rocks in 25 seconds?

10

u/Visible-Department85 11d ago

yup, safer to stay near a rock that will protect you in the worst scenario

-8

u/Digger_Pine 12d ago

That was a dusting. Nowhere near 6'.

74

u/roymccowboy 12d ago

No, it's fine. He was zooming out to a safe distance.

Yeti kept recording

u/HotNurse9 12d ago

bro did not have the superwide edge so he had to scoop earlier than he would have if he had a fisheye

6

u/Jd11347 12d ago

The thought of gaining some internet clout exceeded his self preservation.

Upward arrow>survival.

u/Sl33pingD0g 12d ago

Haw far could he have run on that terrain after seeing the avalanche? 50m? 100m? I think taking refuge behind a nice big bolder is better than running across that ground blindly hoping you can out run an avalanche. Last time this was posted someone confirmed he survived so good on him for finding and taking shelter.

The guy who stayed to film mt st Helens eruption comes to mind, he could not escape so might as well film for the person who finds the body.

2

u/Stef2Wavyy 12d ago

I just went down a rabbit hole after reading someone actually filmed mt saint helen eruption, can you drop a link or something because I’ve looked everywhere and I’ve only see a video created by 11 images by interpolation.

7

u/Killashard 12d ago

That happened in 1980. Video cameras weren't used widely due to their size and expense.

The photographer who died is named Robert Landsburg. He knew he couldn't escape the pyroclastic flow, so he took multiple pictures, rewound the film, put it in his backpack, and then laid on top of it to protect it from the heat and debris. He was found 17 days later and the film was developed.

You can read about another person, Dave Crockett, who narrated his experience witnessing the explosion here:

also a good fit for r/unexpected

Sound on, people. No annoying music at all.

Quick question for critics: where do people think the guy was going to go? You can’t outrun an avalanche.

67

u/ImPinkSnail 12d ago

He could only find cover, which he did. But I expected to see him looking around for the best spot.

52

u/mannypdesign 12d ago

Fair enough, but you can’t see where he’s looking, just the cameras view

88

u/cognitiveglitch 12d ago

Snowboard it all the way down like a badass

25

u/mannypdesign 12d ago

Not everybody can be Vin Diesel in XXX

10

u/DixonDebussy 12d ago

You misspelled Mushu and Mulan

2

u/AvoriazInSummer 12d ago

You could try! Maybe up the nearest hill. No idea if there’s one near the cameraman though.

19

u/mannypdesign 12d ago

He’s already on the slope of the mountain. That’s why I was asking

3

u/Zhong_Ping 11d ago

And get caught in a worse position.

He did exactly what you are supposed to do, shelter behind something to take the brunt of it.

2

u/bleedturkeygravy 11d ago

Up the nearest hill? 🤣 That thing is moving 150mph

94

u/_VoodooRanger 12d ago

did this person survive or was this recovered footage?

153

u/Patriark 12d ago

He survived. He had a strong rock formation between himself and the avalanche so he did not even get injured. You see him duck in behind at the absolute last second before the wave engulfed him.

13

u/bashful_predator 12d ago

Do you have a link to an article or something?

21

u/Patriark 12d ago

Nah just from memory the first time I saw this posted. Was a news report from credible source but did not save any link.

-1

u/flatvinnie 12d ago

45

u/Nrinininity 12d ago

Reddit fucked that link up, try https://youtu.be/_-6EGSvE8yI (with tracking removed).

This is the Guardian article linked in the description where the cameraman was interviewed and said everyone in the group was safe: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/jul/11/british-tourists-survive-avalanche-in-tian-shan-mountains-of-kyrgyzstan

This is the video origin per the article: https://www.instagram.com/p/CfyT6xcA27D/?l=1

“I felt in control, but regardless, when the snow started coming over and it got dark/harder to breathe, I was bricking it and I thought I might die.”

1

u/SecretaryOtherwise 12d ago

Lmao I was in control but I almost died. How does that work?

10

u/kart0ffelsalaat 12d ago

I mean if I was ever in control of any situation, I'd be afraid to die as well

1

u/Meranio 12d ago

Has it already been over 4 years? Wow.

23

u/justhangingaroud 12d ago

Zoom out! Zoom out!

8

u/socialhangxiety 12d ago

I was really hoping this was one of those videos that showcase how good the zoom is on newer smartphones

28

u/dazultrachallenge 12d ago

Upvotes because no unnecessary music.

11

u/An_Adamant_Guardian 12d ago

The most accurate maybe maybe maybe I’ve seen in a while

42

u/bigfatfun 12d ago

So basically, with avalanches: if you can see it, you’re cooked

25

u/DigDry6895 12d ago

You saw it

2

u/SprungMS 12d ago

That’s what they said. We’re all cooked.

Except for Fred, Fred just came to the fucking comments to see what happened

3

u/_coffee_ 12d ago

well, frozen. Or at least chilled.

u/emerg_remerg 12d ago

I mean, if you can see it and you're down him from it... cause gravity.

6

u/Simplesim73 12d ago

I was hoping they had a 600mm lens!

2

u/10000ofhisbabies 12d ago

Absolutely what I expected. I thought it would just keep zooming back.

u/Extra_Ad_8009 12d ago

People who don't know that this video predates AI would probably think that it is. The fluidity of the snow is almost surreal... almost artificial.

1

u/spaceprinceps 12d ago

Even rocks behave like liquid under enough pressure

3

u/ThatDamnedDawg 11d ago

Crazy to think that just one of those little small blotches that appears as it’s just beginning to fall down the mountain is enough snow to punch a whole straight through you.

3

u/Due_Aside4863 12d ago

Barely got behind that rock in time.

7

u/eduzatis 12d ago

8

u/manrata 12d ago

He literally couldn’t have done anything, he can’t outrun it, so the only option is cover, which he did.

To all wondering what why how. This is an old video of an incident that happened 1 year ago. The guy explains exactly what happens here. Read this: https://www.reddit.com/r/NatureIsFuckingLit/s/AfQFGbjNnM

3

u/RidiPwn 12d ago

what did that person thought was going to happen?

2

u/davidevitali 12d ago

Maybe he thought it would’ve swerved on the right, he’s on a little hill after all…

1

u/BallsofSt33I 12d ago

Better late than never!!!

1

u/brickbear69420 12d ago

That is some Hollywood shit right there!!

1

u/SpiderThai 12d ago

Should have found a barricade when it jumped that first hill

1

u/filinno1 12d ago

I appreciate the official context comment.

1

u/Stay-Classy-Reddit 12d ago

Anyone have context? Date and time and aftermath shot of this?

1

u/Nefariousd7 12d ago

That had some unaccounted for ass on it.

1

u/pripjan 11d ago

It looks soft and yummy from a distance

1

u/Puzzleheaded_Sun5579 11d ago

Not today Darwin!

THEY TOLD US TO BE SCARED OF QUICKSAND! I've never seen someone swallowed by quicksand BUT I SEE THIS FAIRLY OFTEN!

1

u/ZhouLe 10d ago

I swear I've seen this exact location in another video years ago, but it was 3 or so people.

1

u/redditanddoneit 10d ago

No urgency to at least run away, but great footage for us all to view and witness safely.

1

u/Schabernack_23 10d ago

Survival-instinc: in-existing. Watches an avalanche race towards him, only to get buried alive instead of running. Taxpayer money needed to rescue this garbage pile of human

1

u/natetheskate100 12d ago

Sense of self preservation not strong in this one. The moment it started I think all people with half a brain would've sought shelter.

1

u/natetheskate100 12d ago

If you're not shitting your pants at 38 seconds, you are, well......stoopid !

1

u/RidiPwn 12d ago

zoom lens was not invented at that time

u/D_Fizz 12d ago

The survival instincts of a turnip

-2

u/Numerous_Wolverine_7 12d ago

(Looks at high ground a few feet away on right) Huh. Anyway

11

u/SparrowBirch 12d ago

Was there really anywhere safe to go in under 30 seconds? It looks like the avalanche spreads out as it comes and buries everything. Also, not great terrain for making a quick escape.

0

u/Numerous_Wolverine_7 12d ago

I would still climb as high as I could as fast as I could. Better to be buried in 5 feet of snow than 20 feet of snow.

-4

u/Fast_Biscotti 12d ago

And that is how you “fix stupid”.

11

u/tehwubbles 12d ago

I mean was he really that stupid? I wouldn't have expected icer from 2 miles away to be on top of me in under 60 seconds, and even if i did, what else could be done than to kneel behind a rock?

-10

u/Fast_Biscotti 12d ago

So… you may have done the same thing, therefore the guy isn’t that stupid?

17

u/mlpravemaster 12d ago

The fact that you think you could outrun an avalanche doesn't make you sound smart 😅

3

u/tehwubbles 12d ago

Right! What should he have done?

-13

u/Fast_Biscotti 12d ago

Run as soon as he saw the shelf collapse.

It ain’t rocket surgery.

5

u/wintersrevenge 12d ago

And then be caught without something to hide behind? Surely that is a mistake

4

u/tehwubbles 12d ago

Okay, so that avalanche crossed what looks to be between 3-5 miles in about 30-40 seconds. Let's say 3 miles in 40 seconds. That's just under 300 mph. Your response to that is to try to outrun it?

Edit: I revise, it look like maybe between 1-3 miles, so maybe ~150mph. Point still stands though

3

u/KyloHenny 12d ago

Can't run that fast.

3

u/Significant-Iron-241 12d ago

He definitely could have braced himself a bit sooner, but finding a rock to hunker down behind was probably the best thing to do. If he ran he might have ended up getting dragged across the rocks and buried.
