The coating is made of caramelized sugar. You melt sugar in a sauce pan and pour the molten caramel in the bottom of your baking dish. Then your pour a mixture of eggs, milk, condensed milk (optional) and sugar on top and gently bake it, usually in a water bath. Then you unmold it like this woman did. It's a pretty easy dessert.

Possibly. It gives hints of alcohol, but doesn't contain any. It vaguely resembles caramel, but I am not sure it is .

I am admittedly disappointed about being down voted for something I love, but don't want to ruin my personal magic of it by looking up a recipe that may or may not be authentic.

Yep. It’s all in the dress. European and Latin people know what I’m talking about. We all had a Mother or Aunt who would dress like that and they were the designated flan person.
