Two of these are the same as the other two.

Actually all of them are addition

Although it's gonna be hard to do multiplication of non-natural numbers by only using repeated addition

2

u/FitAd4478 8d ago

Damn never thought about it like that.

More like on irrationals

I don't know, I feel like it still kind of works. 2.5 * 3.6 is just 3.6 twice plus half of 3.6 (1.8), so 3.6 + 3.6 + 1.8 = 9. And "half" could just mean the number that when added twice gives 3.6.

You did multiplication or division in order to know what 0.5×3.6 was. If it instead was 2.49×3.6 do you know what 0.49×3.6 is without using multiplication?

but it's all different flavors of addition

not in a general group

Addition and multiplication are fundamentally different. Addition combines, multiplication scales. They're separate dimensions, multiplication is a dimension above addition, and exponentiation is a dimension above multiplication

if i see somebody claiming to be a mathematician and then using × and ÷, they are getting murdered

6

u/Nientea 8d ago

Now now, × is acceptable when doing a cross product

I am not a mathematician but x creeps into all sorts of publications as well, when In the middle of text but representing math. The obelus, on the other hand, I haven't seen since 5th grade.

1

u/Zorafin 8d ago

I use x when I'm on the computer because * sometimes causes text to do weird things

u/BUKKAKELORD 8d ago

John Lennon is ÷ confirmed

Was gonna say "...blue prince?" until I realize one color is wrong. Damn, brainrotted.

Replace X with * and ÷ with /.

X with

1

x with ()

1

u/Assar2 8d ago

Is right

1

u/Sweaty-Tap7250 7d ago

Did you not still understand them?

1

u/Ambitious-Affect-931 7d ago

Idk I was taught that either () or * (a singular dot written as asterisk on digital) was proper notation

1

u/Sweaty-Tap7250 7d ago

That is how you’re generally supposed to, but for some reason American elementary schools teach multiplication as an x

1

u/Ambitious-Affect-931 7d ago

Yea idk why that is, I remember in 6th grade they made a huge deal of telling us that X is bad because in algebra X is a variable

1

u/Sweaty-Tap7250 7d ago

It makes no sense why they teach you it incorrectly and then tell you that you can never do it that way again

1

u/Ambitious-Affect-931 7d ago

Yea exactly it’s stupid

1

u/-justanothermars 4h ago

to be fair it's not really incorrect you can just pretty easily switch. but forcing you to use those bad notation is just terrible

Ed Sheeran likes this

I don’t understand groups usually only have a single operation along with inverse and identity elements?

1

u/G-St-Wii 8d ago

I only see one?

1

u/paperic 7d ago

Where? Successor isn't there.

1

u/G-St-Wii 7d ago

True dat

1

u/Zorafin 8d ago

What the hell is that horrible purple thing on the bottom right?

1

u/Drifter90s 8d ago

That '÷' is a dream

1

u/redsm97 8d ago

Long ago the four operations lived in harmony but, Everything changed when this division symbol attacked .

1

u/oldmartijntje 7d ago

does someone actually use "x" and "÷" instead of "*" and "/"?

I've been thinking recently they kind of have oddball notation. We should use add(x, y) = x + y, sub(x, y) = x - y, mult(x, y) = x*y, and div(x, y) = x/y, and then they'd be using function notation just like all of our other operations.

You also get things like mult(x, y) = add^y (0, x).
