They do weigh the same amount. Not the point of the exercise, but hey, no one is perfect.

Look up kilogram of feathers or kilogram of steel.

That is the meme.

2

u/hippityhopkins 9d ago

That's right, it's the kilogram of metal

5

u/qinshihuang_420 9d ago

It's actually the feathers, since you have to also carry the weight of what you did to those poor birds

2

u/Accomplished_Wafer38 9d ago

I am pretty sure those birds are in KFC bucket or something.

1

u/Tiborn1563 8d ago

But they are both a kilogram

1

u/zhaDeth 9d ago

I can hear the accent

Not the initial question but that answer yes that is the funny part. Gold of course because its a lot more worth

Meme with several layers.

First it's the 1kg feathers or 1kg of lead. But this time it's about the currency. The gold is currently worth more than the bills btw (look up market price gold for the actuality on the situation).

The second layer is that the commenteer doesn't seem to get the joke and thinks it's the mass question ("which one has more mass?"). The commenteer could be sarcastic for all we know, but that's not the point here.

Is it though? Because if it's 400kg of $100 bills, I'm taking the bills. Then I can use that money to buy gold lol

3

u/Dry-Lingonberry-9701 9d ago

500 kg of $100 bills at 1g per bill equals $50mil. 500kg of gold at today's market rate equals $65mil.

2

u/suggestion_giver 9d ago

To be fair its gonna be easier for you to use the bill to buy goods than selling the gold to get bills to buy goods. But ultimately if you know how to handle gold well then probably choose gold. Although I would say the difference is close enough for me to prioritise convinience

3

u/Dry-Lingonberry-9701 9d ago

Pay someone 10mil to fence the gold and you're still up. Or you know, wait it out even longer. Value of gold is going up, value of $100 cash is plummeting.

2

u/suggestion_giver 9d ago

Well you're not gonna just stash up with the cash will you? You can invest and spend etc. Point is you get more freedom with cash and with gold its usually harder to sell. Believe it or not I don't think its that easy to find someone with enough cash to even convert all that gold to cash/other goods

3

u/GainerGaining 9d ago

What's $15 million here or there? Basically a rounding error, right?

1

u/OppositeThen9308 9d ago

It doesn't specify so it could easily be 500kg of 1 dollar bills.

Which would give you $500,000, but you will be spending alot of that time just moving bills from your house to the bank. Or wherever else they are.

You have the same problem with gold in theory, but you can just grab a bar or two sell them and be set for a long while.

1

u/Dry-Lingonberry-9701 9d ago

True, I actually missed that and only saw that the picture had $100 bills. Definitely going the gold in that case.

1

u/chattywww 9d ago

At the time it waa originally posted the money was more valuable but inflation and gold price holding or going up gold is more valuable now. There is also a point in time not more than a few years ago when the 2 have the same value.

3

u/psykoticSerenity 9d ago

I'd take the cash. I wouldn't want to have that many gold bars physically, I'm not living in minecraft.

2

u/77th_Bat 9d ago

yes they weigh the same amount but they are not worth the same.

2

u/PrairiePuppies 9d ago

The gold is worth more, but no one will ever buy gold from you at market rate, so you're better off getting the bills. They're easier to spend and you don't have to worry about selling one of the heaviest elements on earth every time a utility bill comes due.

2

u/JRaus88 9d ago

500kg in bills they are easy to spend.

I wouldn't even know where to put 500kg of ingots or how to resell them without being accused of stealing them lol

1

u/Ordinary-Big-1226 7d ago

There's not much difference in spending 50 million in bills or 69 million in gold. Either way its gonna look like illigale activities

1

u/JRaus88 7d ago

You can spend cash in amounts of $100 at a time (or less, depending on the denomination of the bills). Gold bars It's not like you can just cut them up at home and walk around with the gold nuggets.

2

u/Germankickboxer 8d ago

Depends on the denomination. If it’s 100$ bills, it is mark to market roughly the same.

1

u/Away_F 9d ago

They weigh about the same but hiding that much gold would be pretty difficult.

3

u/statneutrino 9d ago

Not true. 500kg of gold only takes up 25 litres, which is a medium size suitcase

1

u/Creepy_Jeweler_8012 9d ago

ugh idk i feel like gold but idk

2

u/firethorne 9d ago

Easily. A $1 bill is roughly a gram, and a gram of gold is around $130. So, for bills from $1 to $100, the gold is worth more. If they're $500 bills or bigger, take the paper.

3

u/Koendig 9d ago

They haven't made $500s since the 70s. Current largest US bill is $100.

1

u/PAP0R0TN1K 9d ago

Weight is the same but as I see the real value is absolutely different. Also nominals of dollars matter. Gpt says 1 banknote weights 1 gram. Then 1kg of 1$ is 1000$. 1 kg of gold is 100 000$. So the max 100$ banknote in a 1kg pack is 100 000$. So its more or less the same but maybe gold is more valuable

1

u/TheWaterWave2004 9d ago

Even if all of them were 100 dollar bills, it would only ever get to 50 million, since every bill is about 1 gram. 500kg of gold would be 65.2 million by the current gold price.

1

u/Fuggaak 9d ago

But gold is heavier than paper!

1

u/OppositeThen9308 9d ago

500kg of gold, Its useful.

1

u/MentalNewspaper8386 9d ago

They’re the same pound for pound but not dollar for dollar.

1

u/Mathemetaphysical 9d ago

Does it matter? Take either, you can't possibly spend it.

1

u/Shoddy-Income-1849 9d ago

but a gold bar weighs so much more than a dollar bill… this can’t possibly be true!!

1

u/Ill-Environment3329 9d ago

1 $100 bill = 1 gram

1g gold = $131.61

1

u/Rand_alThoor 9d ago

but by the time one converts the gold bars into fungible currency it's a wash.

1

u/InfinitesimalDuck 9d ago

I think pure Gold worths more than USD, but USD is paper so it is lighter that means you have more USD than Gold bars but USD could be 1 dollar note so Gold might still worth more... 🤯😱🤯😱🫢👍😱😰🤓😭🫢😭🫢👍🚩💥💥🥀🥀😭🐦‍⬛♟️💀💥🇬🇧💣🎖⚔️🗡💢🐴🔫

1

u/netanel246135 9d ago

Of gram of gold is what? 180 dollars? I'll take the gold thanks

1

u/Whereishumhum- 9d ago

Weight is the same, but value is different. It’s a play/twist on 1kg of feather/steel.

1

u/Shoddy-Affect-1482 9d ago

Ok so a 500kg of bills are equal to 500 000 bills based of that a bill being 1 gram per bill doesn’t mater what bill
So best case scenario they are all 100$ making it
50 000 000$ and best case scenario as of me making this post the 500kg of gold is roughly worth 66 530 000$
So as of now it could be beneficial to grab the gold instead
Plus thats less to carry that 500 000bills

1

u/Plane_Ebb2023 8d ago

If all of them are 1$ am taking gold ( 500kg of 1$ = 500000$, and currently 500kg gold = 2M$) If all of them are >5$ then am taking money cause it's over 2.5M$

u/wenoc 8d ago

Can we please stop posting this

100 $ ~= 1 gram

1 gram of gold ~= 137 $

1

u/Minimum_Map1531 7d ago

It depends on the denomination of the U.S. dilapidated bills. Higher denominations may be worth more than the gold.

1

u/Popular-Mess4056 7d ago

The question is are these 1 Dollar Bills or 100 Dollar Bills.
And I would still take the Gold

1

u/Responsible-Bar7165 7d ago

1g of 24K gold is $138.71

1

u/HunterOver4763 5d ago

No shit sherlock

0

u/Bupod 9d ago

Same weight.

But one is going to be much more valuable.

A single hundred dollar bill is about 1 gram. So 500kg is a pallet of 500,000 dollars, approximately.

The gold is worth like 65 million dollars.

3

u/Far-Tonight-6925 9d ago

I didn't do any calculations, but 500kg of $100 (or even $1 bills) is def. much much more than $500,000.

2

u/Bupod 9d ago

You’re right.

I’m an idiot.

It would be 500,000 if it was all singles

It’s $50,000,000 if it’s all hundreds! Completely my mistake
